They really should have put in some effort to nab Animal Collective since they'll be in the area literally a few days after. I wasn't expecting it, but I would have been pleasantly surprised.

Seriously!!! they would've fit perfectly on the beginning or the 3rd line or the end of the 2nd, ugh, very disappointing
I'm steadily becoming more and more disappointed in the two additions. I sure hope they've something more up their sleeve that isn't a 2015 repeat
Their social media says full lineup. So, no. =/
I've been saying this basically every year, but next year better be the year they actually get Animal Collective and/or Death Cab.
Man, then this is officially the worst year of additions they've ever had. such a shame because this is the weakest lines 3-5 that they have ever had IMO

I feel like their hands were probably strung with only 3 stages this year. It sucks, hopefully it's only temporary.
its becoming clear to me that I am going to have 8+ hours of enjoyable music (for my tastes) a day and still be pissy I have to miss stuff. Nothing mindblowing, but a lot of good bands on this lineup
Running back and forth between Car Seat Headrest, Modern Baseball, The Growlers, and Cloud Nothings would be pretty awful for me.
same. would have to miss Pinegrove for P.tm and Cage, a really weak/slow Saturday aside from Lewis Del Mar, and those conflicting Catfish/Fidlar Sunday sets crush me.
Real Estate just announced a tour with these dates and no ATL:
05-13 Nashville, TN -Exit/In* 05-15 Raleigh, NC - Lincoln Theatre* 05-16 Washington, DC - 930 Club*
Maybe they aren't done with additions after all? This and what they said about Sampha on Twitter makes me think they might have a few more tricks up their sleeves.
Edit: Or they're both doing late night shows.

I feel like J. Roddy, the Growlers, and FIDLAR are all too big to put on that tiny-ass stage. Do like your placement of Nick Murphy though, I hope he's not on during the daytime,
Also, Real Estate just announced a tour and they're in Tennessee the 13th and NC the 15th... They could have definitely grabbed them for Sunday, and they don't even have an Atlanta date on this tour. =/

See, I was thinking that too, but I don't know how big that stage is because I didn't go last year. I was just thinking that maybe they make it a lil bigger since they only have three and then they could fit a little bigger bands on it due to them having direct conflicts.

I'm not sure they can. The tiny stage was already kinda of taking up the max amount of room it could last year.
This year is just going to be... super cramped. They really should have tried for a diff location.
Looks like they easily could have gotten Beach House as well, tour starts 5/24 in NC and no Atlanta show. Yet another band who is a great fit and has never played.
Edit: Not trying to be a downer but I just keep thinking about how amazing Beach House > The xx could have been.

Where though? Not being sassy, I've truly thought about this a lot. If the point is to have a festival in town I don't know where else they could do it. Piedmont Park probably doesn't want to have three out of the four weekends in May dedicated to music festivals. Central Park on the auction block. Grant Park probably doesn't have any areas big enough. Where does that leave? Lakewood?
I'm all for a better venue but I don't know where that could be.

They should definitely use Kennesaw State University as a location again. Not that I go there or anything...
I was thinking Piedmont Park but it's probably too big and too expensive, and I also forgot about the Jazz fest also being in May.

We all want music festivals in our backyard, Chase.

Central park isn't on the auction block. Do you mean civic center (which was where 2 stages were in 2015)? That deal fell through and there aren't any plans for it at the moment (Reed said yesterday actually he's not dealing with selling it, letting whoever is mayor next deal with it), but even without the civic center, central park has more open usable (not taken up by random olympic crap) greenspace in a better layout. I actually went and google mapped it with an acreage tool and centennial park has roughly 4.1 acres of stage greenspace & 19 acres total whereas central park has 7.3 acres of stage greenspace (7.6 if you convert one of the southern tennis courts into a stage, which would actually be almost exactly the same size as the tiny stage at centennial) and 15 acres total.
Another option would be Phoenix II (can fit 2-3 medium/large stages + 1-2 small ones if they rent out the two huge fields next to it that are owned by APS) & Phoenix III (can fit 1 small stage + auxiliary stuff like food/restrooms) parks in Summerhill. You'd get about 12.5 acres of stage greenspace & 21-22 acres total.
Agree with your comments on piedmont / grant park though.
I don't really understand all the love for central park. 3 of the stages were on asphalt which is what everyone complained about at atlantic station.
Central Park has been my favorite Shaky Knees venue. I feel like the scale of it really made the festival feel like it was apart from the rest of the city. The difference with the concrete there was it wasn't everywhere like it was at Atlantic Station. Also, we had a nice area set up between the two main stages in Central Park which allowed us to hear both without having to get up. Mostly, I just hated the death bridge at last year's festival. It tended to back up and those stairs were tough by the end of Sunday.

Oh nice, I was unaware of Phoenix II. And yes, I meant Civic Center. I hadn't heard Mayor Reed's comments on the development of that area but I'd still regard that whole spot as off the table. With the previous attempts to move that land and the efforts on Peachtree Pine it's almost assuredly a major area for redevelopment. Just don't see City Hall wanting a music festival there any time soon.
I do hope they take performance space into consideration when developing the Bellwoods Quarry park. Having that as a major concert/performance space would hopefully lighten the load on Piedmont and Centennial.

I haven't even heard of that park before but it looks perfect. Seriously this festival would hit the jackpot if they were to rent out both halves of that park. If they were to follow the 2015 stage setup, they could put the Peachtree stage in the northeast quarter of the park (~1.5 times as much crowd space as the Peachtree stage had at Centennial, and still even bigger than that stage had at Central park), Piedmont stage in the southeast corner, Ponce/Boulevard stages side by side in the southwest corner, and a covered Buford stage a la 2015 in the baseball field in the northwest corner. Food trucks along the road down the middle in between the areas, and bathrooms/bars on the tennis courts. And parking if GSU would be nice enough to let us borrow the parking lot to the old stadium.
Plus it just seems a lot more open. My main gripe about Centennial Olympic Park is that it doesn't feel very open, and viewing space for the 2nd stage is very limited.
However I'm not a very big fan of the neighborhood setting. Still nearly damn perfect venue.
I thought Centennial was fine with the bridge except maybe they needed to double the bridge. Hopefully the three stages is temporary bc of the Georgia Dome stuff and it'll be back there next year with 5 again.
Central Park or bust. With them running SK and SB, they purchase the park and build a large, permanent stage on the property to function as the main stage and then add a couple festivals in the Fall/Winter and some individual shows throughout the year. That would be heaven and it would be amazing to have a year round, outdoor field as a venue.

Haha yeah I was only aware of it because I saw a greg mike thing where he painted one of the tennis courts. No worries, after the failed sale Reed kinda kept quietish about it, he said that he was letting the next mayor deal with it just this week, so I wouldn't expect people to know that lol.
Yeah hopefully when they develop that park (i think they're gonna call it westside park from the plans) they keep this stuff in mind. Because it's far enough from the city /developed areas that I think it would need a draw anyway >_>
