If Bonnaroo really thinks that the answer to their ticket sale woes are the Black quacking Keys, there's no saving this festival.
I would def prefer The Black Keys to some options. I'd take them any day over 21p or something like imagine dragons
They can do so much worse than The Black Keys. Also, whether you like them or not, The Black Keys are still a draw. Plenty of kids in college now who only heard Tighten Up on the radio in middle/high school (can you believe that song came out 6 years ago now?!) and never got to see them. They would jump at the chance. Definitely a bigger draw for that crowd than LCD Soundsystem anyway.
Jesus Christ man. Kings of Leon haven't made music worth listening to since 2007, and you're concerned about the Black Keys' recent stuff?
The Black Keys get way more shit than they deserve. Legitimately the only thing that's changed about them since 2009 or so is that they've gotten way more popular. Otherwise, if you were into Attack & Release and Brothers, then there's little room for complaint. They're a perfectly fine butt rock arena act.
Yeah I'm not gonna sit here and tell u Kings Of Leon's newer stuff is any good but when they play live they play a decent amount of older stuff from '07 and before, and I don't mind certain stuff from Only By The Night. Idk it's not like it's a landslide but I've seen them both live and enjoyed Kings more. Like I've never felt the urge to listen to the Black Keys on my own but at times I have felt that with Kings. Again, I'd rather neither but I can jus go off of what I've experienced live to this point.

It's not a matter of what could be worse. I like The Black Keys and would obviously prefer them to 21p and Imagine Dragons. But I think in terms of pushing tickets for the college kid demo they need to rely on more EDM and hip hop, I don't think The Black Keys are as much of a draw with that age group as you think.
On the other end of the spectrum, to bring back festival/Bonnaroo veterans you need bigger and more interesting acts that will encourage that crowd to choose Bonnaroo again, not an act they had multiple chances to see at almost every major festival in the United States, including Bonnaroo, sometime during the past 5 years.

This is kind of a pointless debate. Y'all might want to put some stock behind that U2 idea. I think it's been said, but their album is coming late this year/early next with a 2017 tour.

it's crazy to me that it's that old. Yeah personally I am a fan of The Black Keys. I didn't get to see the Arcs and I loved their album. Another run at The Black Keys would be fine with me. Especially if they have 2 other headliners I like. They could even have them share a day with somebody like LDR or Chance. I'd be more than happy.
I feel like 21 Pilots would be in the 4-6 range. Black Keys are def top 3. And FWIW I've had way more fun at 21 Pilots shows than Black Keys. The music isn't any better but at least they put on a show. Ideally neither though. Pilots would be a big draw because of their ridic fanbase but ideally there's something nice opposing because they'd command a HUGE crowd.
21 Pilots is selling out an arena tour. Much to my chagrin, they're headliner material now.

Ah man.. Now's probably a good time to tell you guys that I was talking to Caleb Followill in the Which pit during Tame Impala, and he told me they were coming back to play next year.

Man, if only.
Cue Redisni "confirming" Kings of Leon in 5, 4, 3 . . .
Can I ask, why "if only?" Even if you don't like Roo and have no plans to attend, why would you want the people who are looking forward to going to get stuck with a headliner they dislike?

I wasn't commenting so much on the quality of the artist so much as how hilarious it would be if one of the 2017 headliners was randomly leaked in early August because a band member was partying in the pit to Tame Impala.
Gotcha, yeah that would be pretty funny... I still think "guy on a train told my mom Tom Petty was headlining" still takes the cake though.

As a member of "that demographic", The Black Keys and 21 Pilots are both huge in the eyes of teenagers that are "into" music. They would both sell a lot of tickets. Shit, pair one of those 2 with someone like Drake or The Weeknd, and you're moving major tickets.

as another member of "that demographic" i kind of see TBK as a dad band from my point of view.

And this is where we are now... It is going to be a long couple of months.
I used to the love the keys, but I'm not huge on some of their recent stuff. Also I don't think they transition well to a big stage. They were at their best when they were strictly a two piece. After Brothers their quality of music has gone down.

I could deal with the blatantly false 'confirmations' and even the personal attacks on other members, but using Stephen Colbert for evil instead of good is what truly made hiltons a monster in my eyes
I updated my mock. Now it is a full 101 act lineup. I also took out Gorillaz because I think out of U2, Drake, Arcade Fire, & Gorillaz, I see Gorillaz being the least likely. I also need some help with placement for a couple acts: Kygo, Tegan & Sara, Conor Oberst, AlunaGeorge, & Yo La Tengo. I'm also extremely interested in what you think is lacking in this lineup. I know I'm a little biased because of my music taste, so the EDM and other genres might be lacking. I will continually update this as more new albums are announced and some of these acts stop touring. I'm also working on a day by day lineup and a schedule.
U2 - Drake - Arcade Fire Lorde - The Avett Brothers - Chance the Rapper Major Lazer - Future - Hall & Oates - Kygo - The Lumineers Ryan Adams - The 1975 - ASAP Rocky - James Blake - Cage the Elephant Empire of the Sun - Schoolboy Q - Jim James - Young the Giant Superjam! - The Head and the Heart - Grimes Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes - Bastille - Umphrey's McGee Portugal. The Man - Miike Snow - Run the Jewels - Sturgill Simpson Big Gigantic - Local Natives - Foals - Mavis Staples - Vic Mensa - Grouplove Silversun Pickups - Tegan & Sara - Catfish & the Bottlemen - Cherub Bluegrass Superjam! - Years & Years - Anderson .Paak St. Paul & the Broken Bones - Conor Oberst - Shovels & Rope - Corinne Bailey Rae AlunaGeorge - Savages - Margo Price - Yo La Tengo - Frightened Rabbit Danny Brown - Alessia Cara - Robert Randolph & the Family Band Half Moon Run - Tourist - Mo - Lake Street Dive - Nahko & Medicine for the People Kale - Preservation Jazz Hall Band - Kehlani - The Front Bottoms Lotus - The Struts - Wolf Alice - Jack Garratt - Lil Dicky - Foxing - Marshmallow Wavves - Modern Baseball - The Strumbellas - Diarrhea Planet Louis the Child - Wild Child - Johnnyswim - Hippie Sabotage - Daya Saba - Kaytranada - The Infamous Stringdusters - Here Come the Mummies John Paul White - Jai Wolf - Noah Gunderson - Bear's Den - Son Little The Werks - Julien Baker - All Them Witches - Beach Slang - Saintseneca Seratones - White Lung - The Lonely Biscuits - Carseat Headset Lapsley - Frankie Cosmos - Greys
^ U2 alone is a huge get... And you'll never book Gorillaz at #4. Honestly Drake - Gorillaz - Arcade Fire - Avetts is a plausible top line though. You're right that none of the acts themselves are unrealistic (besides U2, who afaik hasn't played a fest besides Glastonbury in the past 20ish years), but altogether it's way too wild.
I'm thinking next year could be a direct response to this year's weak lineup & sales, and the headliners will reflect that. They're most likely to be tepid about booking another jam headliner or another indie stretch headliner. So what are their options? I can think of three big ones:
Double down on non-jam legacy acts. For contemporary headliners, look to hip hop or pop. Push hard for a proven indie headliner, such as Arcade Fire or the Arctic Monkeys.
That could mean a top line like
Justin Timberlake -- Fleetwood Mac –– Arcade Fire -- Future
but I could see similar names being subbed in for any of these, or the contemporary rock slot going to another legacy act.
No way are Fleetwood Mac anything but #1. I agree with your suggestions though, although it should be pointed out that Arctic Monkeys have never headlined a US fest
Could Justin Timberlake #2, or do you think we should replace one of them with a weaker act? Even this might be too stacked, let alone imaginary "Gorillaz #4' lineups
I know Arctic Monkeys have never headlined a major US fest, but they have mass appeal, they've released a long string of successful records, and they've been drawing massive festival crowds for several years now – I was at Lolla in 2009 when they had by far the most packed set of the fest, outside of headliners. The next summer they tour, they will headline multiple major US fests. If Bonnaroo wants to book a contemporary rock headliner, they're one of the safest bets on the market.

You can take U2 out of any festival mock and it suddenly becomes more realistic. Drake - Arcade Fire - Avetts - Lorde is a deeply plausible '17 Roo set of headliners
Also if you're whining about Black Keys and 21 Pilots as headliners it's because you don't know how short the rock headliner deck is these days
Same goes for hip hop and EDM, you're not a festival headliner until after you've headlined a festival. Not a moment sooner
