I hope I'm not alone in pondering the impact of the Seahawks' Fail Mary "win" on the NFC playoffs.
Packers would still conceivably have a shot at tying Falcons for best conference record. Packers would be a more comfortable 1.5 games ahead of the 49ers instead of the current 0.5... they'd be #2 at worst had there been a correct call, without #3 seed being a possibility. The 49ers would have NFC West locked up by now, despite last night's game. I'm not exactly sure how the tiebreakers would fall if the Fail Mary were called correctly, but the Vikings & Bears would both share a record with the Seahawks at this point. Redskins loss next week would further complicate that.
I know I'm a biased Packer fan. They stole a win from us. But I'm also not cool with another worthy team missing out on a playoff slot because of it. Which, at this point, still seems a possibility.
I don't think it'll knock anyone else out. The Seahawks beat both the Bears and Vikings so they'd own any potential tiebreaker. I can't imagine the Rams beating the Seahawks or the Cards beating the 49ers, so the Seahawks would have the 5 seed regardless of that MNF game. Miraculously, if the Packers win next week that game won't really affect anything at all (Bucs have been so terrible, if Atlanta played all their starters they wouldn't lose to Tampa at home).
Well, if those 3 teams were to tie, the Vikings/Bears tiebreak happens before a 3-way tie-breaker. So, if those 3 were tied at this moment with that GB win being a loss, you tie-break the Vikings/Bears first, with the Vikes winning that due to division record.
Vikings vs. Seattle straight up for the #5 spot. Seattle beat them head-to-head, so Seattle is still the 5 seed.
That was a bit farther than I'd thought into it. But if Redskins lose to the Cowboys & wind up with same record, don't they have priority over the Vikings for a wild card?

I guessed the Vikes to win 6 games this year. Probably won't make it out of Green Bay next week, but making the playoffs is awesome.
Peterson for MVP. The "run Peterson as much as possible" game plan has been well advertised, and still no one can stop him. Very true that without Peterson or Blair Walsh, we would be nothing.

I don't know if you caught it, but they put together a video package during the game today of times the Packers had a player in position who totally failed to stop AP. Dude is ridiculous.

NFC North had Calvin Johnson break the receiving record & Peterson join the 2K club en route to falling short of the rushing record. Neither of them did it for my Packers, but I like to see that regardless.
I can't wait to see this Packers-Vikings rematch on our turf.
If Peterson didn't prove he is the MVP last night, I don't know what it would take.
That was truly a great game.
Excited for the playoffs. The NFC should be pretty nuts.
Also, was there any real explanation as to why the Packers were not penalized in the same manner as the Lions for attempting to challenge an automatically reviewed play?

The refs/booth made the decision to review the play before McCarthy threw the flag, hence still making the play reviewable. It's really an absolutely ridiculous rule.

What keystone said. The commentators explained it but also very explicitly said 1) they expected Lions fans to be pissed and 2) the rule was possibly the dumbest one in the NFL right now, and the league would be out of their minds to not fix it in the offseason.
P.S. Nelson grabbing that flag was a straight badass move. Way to have your head in the game, Jordy.

I hear a lot of people saying this, but to be honest I'm completely dumbfounded as to how McCarthy wouldn't know the rule, especially by Week 17. Any fan who watched the Lions Thanksgiving day game should've known the rule. Before the commercial break during the challenge Rodgers was livid with McCarthy too for throwing the flag but shockingly I don't think Aikman/Buck knew why. I about kicked over my T.V. when I saw him throw it. No excuse for MM to throw it and he's extremely fortunate the (terrible) rule didn't cost them.
Ok, I had the sound turned down on the tv at the time so I never heard an actual explanation. I still don't really understand how it could be executed any differently.
Turnovers are automatically reviewed, as are touchdowns (Lions game), so a challenge flag at any point should bring about the same penalty. Unless the review was already underway, which would have been announced via the official. Glad it, ultimately, didn't have an effect on the outcome of the game.

I agree. Anyone with even a passing interest in the NFL probably heard about the rule a ton after that fiasco with the Lions. I was pretty shocked that MM threw it as well because there is no way he didn't know the rule. My guess is just that he threw it out of instinct/anger rather than thinking of it.
It seemed to me that Aikman/Buck thought Rodgers was pissed over the call and not the flag at first.
They are. I'm suprised Da Bears fired Lovie. Who will they find out there that is better?
Reports earlier this season said they would be interested in Bill O'Brien from Penn State. At the moment, though the top name being tossed around is Mike McCoy the OC from Denver. Then there is also the long shot names like Gruden and Cowher.
As far as Lovie, I have been a long time supporter of his. He gets knocked by fans for "not showing any emotion" which I always felt was a bogus criticism. His players like him, and they play very hard for him, especially on Defense. With that said Lovie had to go. As a HC you are accountable for all three phases of the game. He's a defensive guy, but it's his responsibility to get the right OC in place to make it work. He had over four chances to do that, and every single one of his hires has been awful. In 9 years he's never had an offense rank higher than 15th. With the addition of Marshall and Jeffery, and a very solid backfield with Bush and Forte, the fact that they were completely inept at moving the football because Mike Tice is a first-time offensive play caller just screamed that it was time for a change. His season didn't warrant an extension, and with 1 year left to go on his contract there is no decent OC that would want to come here. It had to be done.
