Won't they want to split up the audience like Bonnaroo has in the past? Something like Arcade Fire vs. Green Day, The Strokes vs. Lady Gaga, Soundgarden vs. Flaming Lips seems reasonable to me.

Yea, but there's probably some people who like the two acts they are splitting up.....even if they can be totally different. Not usually, but it can happen.

yeah that definitely happens. wilco vs. RATM a couple years ago was a horrible conflict for me.
still--id rather have two bands i want to see playing at the same time than one band I dont really care for playing all by its lonesome

For those localites, Sufjan Stevens and Adrian Belew (Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads, King Crimson) have been added to Big Ears Festival. It's starting to look like a real lineup now with The National, Vampire Weekend, and The xx.
I read on the cos message board that the big surprise was the gary chardonnay video? Evidently someone emailed the roo about the big surprise and they emailed them back that the chardy video was the surprise. Really? You think they're messing with the guy?
I have the 1970 isle of wight poster in my room.... it's argueably the best lineup ever constructed by man or beast. the doors, hendrix, chicago, miles davis, ELP, The who, moody blues....it's pure heaven man.
I wanna think there is still some negotiating going on with another headliner. I think they delayed the lineup as long as they could and then had to play the cards they had at that time. Couldn't hurt ticket sales.
I'm sure you mean Chicago, and you're wrong. Chicago rules. Huge innovators, massive record sales, and great live show, especially in 1970.
Also, Gilberto Gil, Sly and the Family Stone, and Leonard Cohen all played Isle of Wight. Maybe not the best festival ever, but a damn good one. I have DVDs of the ELP, Hendrix and Miles shows and they are all awesome.

If that is not the best lineup ever constructed, let us know what is....7 out of 7 of those artists, are legends, or made up of legends that have inspired most of the artists of today, none of which are overrated, or any part of the word garbage. Its amazing how antagonistic people can be on here, either that or just completely dumb when it comes to music....ridiculous...

ELP are most certainly a legendary act, regardless of whether or not you like them or not. They were one of the primary bands to popularize progressive rock. The Doors are also legendary. You can't argue The Doors as an influential band.
Chicago is more debatable, especially since they got so bad later on in their career.
Def a dumb argument though. Woodstock's probably the best, but isle of wight is certainly fantastic, as is monterey pop festival of 1967.
Chicago was a much different band in 1970 than they became in the 80s.
ELP has undergone a fairly bizarre overrating period in the 00s because of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. They're an alright band, but I don't think their music holds up particularly well.
The Doors have always been as overrated as they are influential. They caught lightning in a bottle for a couple years then Morrison wasted the talent of the band by falling in love with his own reflection.

I think you're confusing ELP (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) with ELO (Electric Light Orchestra).

Ha....you're right. ELO is just kind of a poor man's 70s Beatles.
ELP straight up sucks. Just my opinion. I understand why people would be into them, but for my money, no band wanked harder than ELP.

ELP does not suck. Hugely influential, in some ways creating the prog-rock genre. They and Keith Emerson's the Nice were the first ones to really merge rock and classical.
Also, Hendrix didn't think they sucked. It was originally supposed to be HELP (Hendrix Emerson Lake and Palmer) but Hendrix went and died.
EDIT: Looks like it's "brewboss defends 70s rock icons whose sound hasn't aged well to twentysomething hipsters" day on inforoo. Quick, someone bash Uriah Heep.

Yeah, I get why people would like ELP. I just can't stand them. Top 5 hated bands from that era for me. Surefire way to get me out of a room is to turn on an Emerson Lake and Palmer record.
But then, I also hate half of Miles' acid jazz records.

I can't stand the term "hipsters" and I hate the whole "hipster" scene. Please don't assume that anyone who is young is a "hipster". I'm 23 and can't stand to see dudes in jeans 2 sizes to short wearing an old-fashioned hat just so he thinks he's "unique". People can dislike the music you like and not be a specific stereotype.

This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.
