a lot has been said about the present popularity of KoL which elevated the band to supposed headliner status. this status is explained by the album sales this year, increased tour sales, and radio stations constantly playing their couple of hit singles. three other artists have received similar sudden popularity in the past year. one is susan boyle, which for the sake of this argument is not important. if she actually came to bonnaroo she'd be a novelty tent act. the other two are lady gaga and taylor swift.
what is interesting to note is that these artists are hardly considered for headliners in any threads other than the occasional gaga page. in many ways, lady gaga was larger than KoL this year: more album sales, more singles, and much more publicity. is it because her repertoire consists of only two full albums or is it because a solo female artist cannot compete for headliner spots amongst full male bands? most speculation would put gaga in a tent late night, or a what/which preheadliner, but not as a headliner.
and then there is taylor swift, who outsold both KoL and LG this year, while also having quite the controversy herself. a kanye-hating roo fest might empathize with her for the kanye diss, but she too would be an early day what or which act.
so did AC/Superfly decide KoL was good enough to top the bill? if so, i guess it would be because of the same reason they originally had jack johnson as a headliner in 2008. but he didnt stay there for long...
You make good points but the big difference between KOL and Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Susan Boyle is that the Kings of Leon have played Bonnaroo before. That, plus the fact that they're from Tennessee, leads more people to assume that they will be at Roo this year.
no doubt that i personally think KoL are more appropriate as headliners and that they are more likely to be there this year because they have been to roo multiple times, but when KoL was performing at roo in past they were a fun rock band that opened the what stage in 2007. now they basically are a pop band like kanye.
i wasnt suggesting gaga or swift SHOULD be headliner contenders, just bringing up perspective on KoL's popularity this year. but maybe Jay-z flying in from isle of wight for one night would make more sense, juggernaut? ;D
i just expect backlash of jack johnson proportions
i'd love for roo to continue the split friday schedule. it not only made the crowds more manageable but allowed for more options. roo would need to make very certain that the two conflicting large bands would not cause too much conflict for festival goers. beasties vs byrne made sense, but beasties vs nin would have been catastrophic. KoL vs stevie wonder or KoL vs Ringo Starr would be fine by me. I'd probably catch some of each set.
greatest part of bonnaroo is that they evolve and change every year. we have no idea what is in store for us
their songs play opposite kanyes songs on the radio. and they have their own clothing line now. and their recent articile in spin magazine is nothing but them talking about how much beer and tequila they drink, except for when they talk about how they wish they werent so popular, but "selling out" has gotten them five times as many fans so they think its worth it. pop bands play popular music. in my opinion they are a pop rock band
differences between them and kanye is that they play their scheduled time slots and they have yet to sample a daft punk song. but give them time, they werent even around ten years ago after all
they are pop MUSIC like kanye. sorry i confused yall with the word band haha but his ego counts for at least four other members
What kind of a world would we be living in if The Allmans "opened" for KOL? That would be a tragedy.
The kind of world where KoL gets tons of airplay on every radio format imaginable, had a massive hit record this year, and sells out amphitheaters, and the kind of world where the Allman Brothers haven't come up with new music in oh, 25 years or so - also the kind of world where I can walk up to the ticket gate of my local amphitheater on the day of an Allman's show and buy tickets for about 15 bucks, then watch them in a half-empty venue?
Like it or not, the Allmans simply are not commercially popular these days - just because they made great music 40 years ago does not mean they're still relevant.

i missed roo and seeing radiohead at all that year because i was getting married.
Was it worth it?
haha. trick question. i regret missing radiohead. i regret every year that i could have gone to roo and didn't. 04,06,08. and to keep pattern i think i may be adding 10 to that list.
might be the single dumbest thing I have ever said.
Honestly I think there is a big difference for me between what I considered "pop" hip-hop or rap, or someone like Jay-Z or Kanye who I both like a whole lot, and something I would just consider rap like Doom. It's like someone else said the Beatles were pop. I would be willing to bet that 50% of everyone's iTunes library on here is full of bands who load there music full with pop hooks.

technically there is a hip-pop or pop rap genre, ie the young money song "bedrock" or lyaz "replay" etcetc (these are two of my guiltiest pleasures at the moment )
and while it is sad that more people would pay more money to see KoL than they would ABB, its just the way it is.
and i know ITM wasnt serious but Bruce didnt "open for" MGMT, MGMT was a Bruce after party. albeit overcrowded and underwhelming.

As far as KoL goes, I'm counting on a split headliner sort of deal like last year's Friday - KoL in this case against Stevie Wonder or Pavement (or somebody else, but those are two groups that I think would fit well - Soundgarden also if they play, either way these are all acts that are *borderline* headliner). Then after that go into a big late night show like last year: either a big classic rock act (in this instance, the four big classic rock acts I can see showing up at the farm this year are the Who, AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, and maybejustmaybe Led Zeppelin) or another big split - featuring something that's typical Roo and something that's not. I'd call Furthur and Gaga. Or just one or the other and some great tent acts to balance it out.
Saturday we get a big classic rock act. The Who, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, or maybejustmaybe Led Zepp. Sunday we close with Dave.
But maybe I'm really just hoping for a complicated Friday so I don't have to watch Kings of Leon. Not really that big a deal though - I can always use a nap by then.
I'm probably being overly optimistic, but here's my top of the lineup:
Roger Waters • Dave Matthews Band • Guns N Roses • Daft Punk • Kings Of Leon • My Morning Jacket • Flaming Lips • Arcade Fire • Allman Brothers Band • MIA
Friday: Which- My Morning Jacket, MIA (Late Night) What- Kings Of Leon, Guns N Roses
Saturday: Which- Arcade Fire (Headlining Which Stage) What- Roger Waters, Daft Punk (Late Night What)
Sunday: Which- The Flaming Lips (Headlining Which Stage) What- The Allman Brothers Band, Dave Matthews Band
