I just got an email that Pearl Jam will be playing at Summerfest with Tom Petty on June 29th and 30th in Milwaukee. Not sure what effect this has on them possibly playing Roo, but I thought I'd pass it along.

ok, I just did a lil reasearch....
Its looking like Pearl Jam and their tour promoter are actively scheduleing date for the tour as we speak. If you go to pearl jam.com you can see-they just added two dates with tom petty on june 29 and 30 at Summerfest. They also have a 3rd SFrancisco date "reserved" ; and they added another Gorge date....
Sooooo, it looks like PJ's summer tour is still actively being added to, and planned. Its not like dates were realeased a while ago and we are still crossing our fingers for the Bonnaroo add. They are adding dates recently and frequently- so there is still hope.
Most promising of all is the summer fest adds. Lets look at the facts:
-Two night Petty and PJ co-bill -at a festival a few hundred miles from Bonnaroo -just 10 days or so after bonnaroo -Bonnaroo already has Petty
there is still hope, despite the lack of PJ in the round 5 announcement today.

they need somebody to open for petty on friday... i don't think anybody playing friday now can fill that spot.... i think it's gonna be either pj, abb, or some other big act... elvis costello is the most likely now and I just don't see him rocking the second headliner slot before petty....

summer fest is not a festival in the same way that roo is a festival...it is like 2 weeks long and spread out over a city, no camping.... its more like a lot of shows in a city over 2 weeks then it is a festival like roo or waka or 10klf or coachella
but you are right there does appear to be a spot available before petty. i cant see any of the friday bands filling that spot
i think willie nelson would do nicely in that spot... make up for him missing in 04....or they could bring back winwood. he rocked

Just don't see it happening unless Roo plans on having 4 headliners
I cant for the life of me understand why Pearl Jam would ever play the Roo without headlining... It just seems silly to me at this point to even hope that they'll get added...
I read that Codetalkers is going to have an afternoon stage slot on Sunday...

I have to agree with you on that. I would just hold on to them for the next roo.
Actual headliner versus potential headliner plus a lot of other factors weigh in on the Pearl Jam notion. First off, they could still be a headliner (we've been through this ALOT on many threads-- Rounds 6 & 7 have contained major headliners in the past). Second, they would want a daytime/afternoon slot (again, for the security of their first festival gig since Rokslide). Third, they are NOT headlining in the shows where they are with Petty, so why is it so difficult for people to see them doing the same gig at Roo?
Anyway. I'm not saying it's a sure thing... But all the signs suggest it, especially since Superfly have been wanting them so bad. From Pearl Jam's perspective it would be contradictory to have their first festival since a massive Euro-fest disaster to be another Euro-fest. This could be a great move on their part to do a softer re-entry, in the U.S., with a great vibe. Plus, with everyone they are touring with this summer.
elvis costello is the most likely now and I just don't see him rocking the second headliner slot before petty....
I can assure you that isn't true. Costello will bring it, you'll believe me when he plays "Pump It Up".
I think we've been speculating PJ all this time due to their tour with Petty. We figure, if they're on the road together, why not? But after the announcement that the Petty tour will open with Trey, and PJ doesn't pick-up til Summerfest makes me think the link was from Petty to Oysterhead, or vice versa. Bottom line, don't think PJ is likely, they would have booked it by now and it would probably would have came out in the Petty announcement. I support a Friday mainstage stage starting with Costello, then Oysterhead, fading briefly into just Trey, then Petty joins him on stage for a few songs, Trey leaves, the headlining begins. I would get myself in front of the stage that day and never leave, not even to pee.
Clutch, the PJ speculation started a full year before this Petty announced tour. Superfly have been openly courting them (originally for Vegoose), the MMJ was another hint, the doing-festivals-again thing was another, the open slots around Roo was the next and THEN came the Petty situation. So this isn't just blind hope (although for some it's obviously driven by it). And Superfly have supposedly been trying to get them out of their no-festivals rule for two years now.
Oh I agree, those are all good reasons for speculation. But at this point, this late of an announcement for sucha big act seems unlikely. I think that the Petty-PJ tour was the biggest link in a possible bonnarro appearence, and probably the only hard piece of evidence we had, and now the link is not so strong. I'm pretty sure Super Fly has signed all the stage acts they're going to have, and if they snagged PJ, they woulda told us, or it would have come out in the Petty announcement.
I hope they're added, but who knows. I do take hope in the fact that major headliners (as big as PJ or bigger) have been announced in Rounds 6 & 7 in years past. There's another touring link after MMJ and Petty this summer: Sonic Youth, who play 3 dates with them.
Fingers crossed, but in terms of hard speculation they are the only semi-large band that I think we have much evidence for (most others it's just a clear schedule that begets hope).

I agree that a big act like PJ would be announced by now. BUT, what if they are holding the add until the pre-sales of the other dates run out.
PJ's tickets are like 60 bucks for some of these shows. Thats pretty pricey. They might try to sell as many as they can to their own shows; before diverting interest to a centralized fest that has an awesome lineup. Many PJ fans might see the add to Bonnaroo, and scrap any plans of other PJ show to catch them at roo.
So get a few sold to the other shows to hike attendance up before diverting attention away.
I think it's still fairly possible that they are added. When you look at how many other bands they are connected to at Bonnaroo already this summer, it just seems like the perfect fit for them. However, I do agree. They wouldn't announce them right away because it could eat into their tour sales. I know I wouldn't have bought a ticket to see them in Chicago if I knew for sure they would be at Bonnaroo.
HeavyC- what night of Chicago are you going to? I'll be at the 16th and 17th. And I agree- I wouldn't have bought tickets for the second night if I knew they were doing Roo.

yea, and you are just one person. Imagine the hundreds of kids in OH, IL, PA, MI, DC, MN, WI & NJ that would do the same thing- Go see PJ at Bonnaroo instead of a $60 + TM charges show if they could. Thats 12 shows that would suffer if they werent allowed to sell well due to a distracting Bonnaroo add...
They have held big names late in the game EVERY year, why would this one be different?

I dont know man, think sometimes people read into the economics too deeply... I honestly dont think Bonnaroo would draw enough people away from typical tour dates to have it matter all that much...
I think in the declining ticket sales market this is exactly right. If I was Pearl Jam's management, this is what I would ask for. It isn't reading too deep to look at demographic and market cannibalization, that's a very basic sales concept.
Sorry, my Masters is in business with a marketing emphasis. I can't control the geekspeak sometimes.

Since we are looking at the business side. If PJ is selling tickets for $60 and most probably will sell out a good number of the venues they play this year, why take time out to play roo?
The economics do not make sense from a business standpoint.

I think the 16th. A buddy of mine bought the tickets, and I can't remember what date he said it was.

I agree. There are a TON of bands, in fact, the majority of bands at bonnaroo, are also touring this summer. Tom Petty didn't seen to mind too much when he was announced. Bonnaroo announcements don't sway individual artist's ticket sales too much IMO. Perl Jam would sell out their shows regardless of when bonnaroo announced they were playing.
Except that even Pearl Jam haven't been selling out their shows at every venue.
And Petty didn't even have a summer tour planned yet when he was announced. And Petty, Radiohead and others command ticket prices like Pearl Jam does- so why would anyone play Roo? Must be some other reasons such as vibe, spurning album sales, wanting to be a part of a particular music community and having a good time. Dare I say, to be a part of the vibe?
