We've been talking a lot about hip hop around here any more, and I just wanted to make sure that in all these new additions, Atmosphere doesn't get lost in the mix. Slug and Ant are the very best live hip hop act I've ever seen, and this show is absolutely positively unmissable. Anyway, just thought I'd give them a shout out, because as much as I'm ridiculously stoked about the Streets, Atmosphere should NOT be overlooked.
Checked out Atmosphere in Chicago at the Vic on Friday.
My feelings on the show really mirrored my feelings for his studio stuff:
Beats/music, style, flow: really good (not quite great imo) Lyrical content: not for me
If you are a big Atmosphere fan, then you have a lot to look forward to from his live show. He started out with him and a DJ and some of the opening MC's (I believe from Los Nativos), and eventually transitioned to a full band. The clip from Jimmy Kimmel on the Atmosphere myspace page is representative of the latter. The band sounded good and it was basically a really "true to the sound of the album" type of show, especially for hip-hop. In many ways it felt more like a rock show than a hip-hop show (less "throw your hands in the air" interactivity, more screaming girls). Frankly I thought the venue (sold-out Vic) was a little too big and crowded for a good hip-hop show. I felt like I probably would have had a blast in the first ten rows, but there was no way I was going to get up there, and I felt a bit on the fringe of "where it was at".
Overall though, the performance was very high energy, good sounding, and well executed. Way more intelligible and engaging than 90% of hip-hop shows I've been too. I just wish this guy would stop complaining about this girl that dumped him five years ago.
Personally, he's in a "wait until the schedule comes out" category for me Bonnaroo-wise at this point. I feel like I might enjoy a Bonnaroo set from him a bit more due to the ...wait for it...atmosphere, but I probably won't hesitate to opt for something else if there's a big conflict.
