Same. I read the books several times in high school with my mom's original hardback copies. I am hoping for the best.

Rumor is a lot of Amazon's viability as a streaming platform is riding on the success of this show. They spent SO MUCH money on it. I'm hopeful that it'll be good. My worry is that people will go in expecting Peter Jackson's LOTR, and not get that, and get pissed, even if the show isn't bad on its own merits.

If that is the case, then they should not have spent what they did making Daisy Jones & the Six for it to be more likely than not, trash, written off and basically be the producers in real life.
My husband has read all the books. Which he repeatedly reminds me of. Like it's some sort of badge of honor. Anyway, I'll try it. Not expecting much, so hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised.

I’ll watch it with an open mind. Could be quite good. There’s a reason this stuff if essentially appendices. They can’t really “ruin it” all that much. Just depends on if the writing can tie it all together into a cohesive story with characters you’re attached to.
I feel like Amazon made The Wheel of Time enjoyable. So maybe they can work more magic here.

Just the names attached are what makes me nervous. Bayona's most high profile work is maybe the worst Jurassic Park movie, not to mention the ickiness of all things Bezos. Also the fact they nixed New Zealand for wherever it ended up. I know it isn't in the same filmic universe as Jackson's, but man I love looking at New Zealand on film.
Regardless of all that, the hate it's gotten online is fucking gross. The trailers were actually pretty hopeful.
agree internet fan culture is bad. for most kinds of shows i don't engage with fan culture at all outside of IRL interactions, inforoo, and maybe some high level comments on r/television. but like if i'm watching House of the Dragon and enjoying it, the last thing I need is some angry fan giving me some reason to hate it. i only go deep into fan culture with comedy series, i've found the communities around those tend to just want to have fun with it.
I did actually enjoy the amazon WoT fan melts because the books are trash and amazon actually did a decent job fixing what was broken with them. still not a great show but much more enjoyable than the books.
my enthusiasm for the new LOTR series is about the same as it was for House of the Dragon: curious but not excited. The Hobbit was the first book I ever read and I've always liked LOTR in general, but I don't have a strong emotional connection to the world, so if the series sucks it's no big deal to me. if it looks cool and is well acted and tells an engaging story I'll consider it a success.

I don't go two years without re-reading all the books. Meanwhile, my wife thinks the wizard who sets Frodo on his journey's name is "Gandor." Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat were right all along.

I feel like one thing Peter Jackson understood really well for that particular trilogy was how to make changes to the source material in order to make it work better on-screen while still preserving the spirit of the thing. It feels like things typically either fall too far to one side (slavish dedication to material that works great when you read it, but not so much when you're watching it on screen) or the other (changes that abandon the vibe of the source). Somehow, he and his team got it right down the pipe on those movies.
Then, they made the Hobbit films, and I don't know even what happened.

Look no further than She-Hulk to see how bad internet fan culture has gotten. Obviously the pay checks are good but I feel bad for anyone joining Marvel projects now. The hate is substantial.
For TROP, I’m indifferent. Same way I feel about THOD. If it’s good, ok cool. If not, I’ll ignore it like I do with most fantasy shows nowadays (The Witcher, Wheel of Time, etc). There’s just too many other good shows out there to pay mind to a mediocre one.

My kingdom for a fantasy series in which it doesn't look like every set piece, prop, and costume was fabricated that morning and/or rendered in CG.
Lord of the Rings, along with Harry Potter, was the peak of quality blockbuster filmmaking. Nothing since has come close. 2001 to 2003 were the best years for big film franchises.
I’m super pumped for the new series, even with my hatred for Amazon (Although they did save The Expanse and have had a really good track record of allowing shows to play out over multiple seasons, unlike Netflix).

I took a course in college that was about the religious and philosophical implications of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien so call me a nerd.

but I do worry about this one just because even if those movies were trash, they box officed like 3 bil, so just hoping the studio isnt just like who cares if it sucks people will watch

I pin it on whoever decided it should be a trilogy. You could tell The Hobbit in one film...two if you *really* wanted to spend time on the Battle of the Five Armies, which even Tolkien just kind of yadda-yaddas through in the book.

I think he was just under a ton of studio mess and just rolled with it to get it done. should've just done Del Toros 2 and ran with it but he left because of studio squabbles iirc

There's THREE Hobbit movies? I knew there were two parts. thejeremy was very determined to try to get me to watch them, but that was before he realized how stubborn I am. I watched the first, and told him I wasn't watching anymore. After he watched the second one, alone, he never tried to get me to watch them again.
He puts on movies when I am not paying attention, that are movies I refuse to watch. Some I am able to get out of watching, most I am not. Only once have I agree my original assessment of a movie was incorrect.
If you watch the extras on Desolation of Smaug, Jackson just knew he didn't have time to film the battle of the five armies for the film, they were already super behind schedule. It was something like just a few months before Smaug was released that they decided to make a part 3. Those extras on The Hobbit films are pretty depressing. You could tell Jackson was just so over it.
