Since my band of 'Rooers is from different places, we're converging in Atlanta and driving an RV up from there. Obviously, we'll be hitting up Walmart or Cosco between ATL and 'Roo to get provisions. I'd love to bring my 5-day cooler, but I doubt the nice folks at Delta would be willing to consider that one of my checked bags. I'm wondering what we might be able to bring with us so we aren't buying stuff we all have at home, just to give it away at the end of the weekend.
Has anyone done the "fly & drive"? What suggestions do you have?
Have been to plenty of gatherings, large and small, and find all the advice urging you to keep it simple, to be great advice.
I fill a Coleman cooler with my sleeping bag, general stuff, shade provider of some sort and "toys" - Once I pick up the rental vehicle I fill the cooler with food & snackage, get a water supply, stop at the liquor store, etc...and I'm good to go.
I use my backpack for only personal stuff - what little clothing one would need for 3 days/nights - and on the way home you can get even more into the cooler.
Tape it shut for the flight. As long as it's not packed to heavily, it's treated just like every other bag you check.
We're coming from Seattle - looking forward to the sun! I've rented a minivan and plan on making that home base for 3 glorious days... ;D
I too have checked through the airport with my camping gear... putting light items in the cooler is a good idea just remember with security you may want to take some extra tape just in case they have to open it. You can also travel with a camping stove just no propane.
