That’s a pretty odd quote. Like, if Coachella were a one-off, then sure. But it wasn’t. Any investment in creative direction, set design, etc was an investment in the tour, not one show.

Did they use the same setup for their whole tour? With the giant floating ring and whatnot?

That was my understanding. I know they used it at Madison Square Garden for sure.

Eh, there’s still some validity to that comment. Being booked to headline Coachella made it easier to book other large gigs, but required the investment in production to make Coachella work. Obviously there was already strong demand for Tame, but there was definitely value in making that one performance main stage worthy and it gave them a bump.
A cleaner example would be Daft Punk who spent their whole paycheck building out the pyramid. Without that Coachella performance and that production the 2007 tour could have looked a lot different.

Depended on the venue. He didnt use it at Osheaga or Boston Calling but did at Glasto and ACL

No, they did not. A lot of the festivals they played at couldnt pull off the giant floating donut because of stage size.

Still lines up with them dropping/getting dropped from all the spring lineups after failing to reach an agreement with Coachella. I wonder if they felt they weren't going to be ready to play the bigger fests or if they really wanted to be billed number 1 overall on any show they'd be playing. I'm really curious what happened here because even the initial leak on this forum said they weren't going to be a headliner.
I doubt they're betting on themselves having more value after they release an album, 2020 is arguably going to be the all time peak of the demand to see them perform.
Edit: We know Riot fest probably overpaid for them, but do music midtown and aftershock have that kind of money to be throwing around?
Going from potentially headlining Coachella to Riot Fest, Music Midtown and Aftershock is a bit of a downgrade.
Probably more appropriate for them though. So Calvin probably got whatever they were getting paid? Would have loved for then to go out and get something rare with that cash. Portishead or something.
I’m honestly just hoping despacio shows up again this year with plenty of James Murphy. It will be in New York the week before the festival. That would really give a bump to the whole lineup

Calvin was probably the best they could do on short notice

I’m sure, and to be fair, I haven’t seen his name anywhere in a while as far as live performances go.

They doubled down ( literally ) for Metallica. And im sure signing MCR for Aftershock means theyll do the butt rock circuit next year because they can headline those spring fests now and bring in a new audience too.

Forum ticket pricing is $94 to $194 supposedly (!), so if they're doing arena shows grossing $2.5m, it's hard to say they aren't much of a draw. Especially since there was never really a rumor they were headlining Coachella, just subbing.

I'm mostly talking about festivals. The arena shows were likely going to happen regardless of Coachella or not. And fwiw, I heard from at least two reliable people that MCR were initially one of the headliners.
My guess is due to the response they received from the surveys and fan reactions to the past couple of lineups, they're going to make an effort to try to get one rock/alternative headliner a year and MCR was part of that effort. Sorta the opposite of what they used to do with hip-hop/rap headliners, get one of those but not a whole lot in the undercard.

So my group is staying semi close to the festival this year for the first time. Previously we have always rented a house in Palm Springs and shuttled. Being that we’re only a little over 6 miles from the festival we have decided to not purchase shuttle passes this year and try the Uber route. Obviously I’m not concerned with getting to the fest each day, but does anyone have any tricks for leaving the fest each night? I assume Uber pickup is a shit show but have never actually witnessed it for myself. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Am I crazy or does Kevin Parker consistently insist he never makes any money doing anything in interviews?
To be fair, Modular took a lot if not all of his royalties from his first two albums. Now he has a Tesla and a seven bedroom house in LA along with a crazy home studio in Perth, he makes bank.
I’ve been listening to some of Dua Lipa’s new music, and Coachella really dropped the ball by not having her on the second line. She would’ve been a much more interesting sub than Flume.

Is driving yourself out of the question? We stay within 10-15 miles each year and, I feel, driving, despite the long walk from the lot, is relatively simple and free of charge. Before that, when we camped off site, we would ride bikes in and loved it. Unfortunately, I can't help out with any info on Uber/Lytft etc. Unless you are going to be under the influence, I'd drive. Hope this helps.

Appreciate the insight, but driving definitely isn’t an option.

Dua Lipa subbing for Rihanna is the dream combo next year.

I would not plan on Uber to get back, personally. My group decided to do shuttles one year (we're in palm desert), and the shuttle situation the Friday that year was an absolute shitshow; half our group warned the other half to just take taxis or ubers. It was a 3+ hour wait, and the cost would've been obscene. We wound up walking a couple miles down the road, paid someone with a van $80 to drive us home, and promptly went back to driving in and out each day.
This was W1; W2 might be better between the smaller number of people and having worked through logistics W1. But if driving is truly not an option I'd consider shuttling to a nearby stop and ubering from there.
