We all know that a good pair of headphones/speakers can drastically change one's appreciation of a song - but what songs do you feel more or less require full immersion to appreciate? I find that songs with a lot of layers and/or nuance really take on a whole new light when I listen to them with the sole intention of taking them in. I used to not care for Sigur Ros too much, but then I turned the lights off and just listened to them...there's a whole world of texture in their music that I missed just from casual listening. Aphex Twin is similar; with good audio fidelity you're much more able to capture the little blips that otherwise can get lost in a muddy mix.
I was a little unsure if this thread would just end up with everyone praising some of the same acts this board tends to appreciate (like the ones mentioned above), but I figured I'd might as well put it out there and see what there is to discover.
Edit: This could also be a good thread to just ooh and ahh over your favorite cerebral or textural music, or music that makes significant use of the soundstage. Edit: OR what music do you prefer to test out new headphones on

I don't know where else to ask this so I'm trying this thread.
I broke my cheap headphones recently, and I have finally decided to splurge on getting a good pair of headphones. A little bit of research pointed to me that Sony WH-1000X M3 is the way to go within my budget.
Anybody using this model? Or any other suggestions?

when i was buying a pair of bluetooth headphones a couple years ago i auditioned the bose qc35ii and the sony wh-1000mx mk2 (previous iteration of the model you are considering). both are great headphones. i actually preferred the sound of the sony, but ended up going with the bose because it's so comfortable. i mostly use them at the office, so since they are on my head for several hours a day comfort was a priority. the sonys weren't uncomfortable, just not as comfortable as the bose.
while i haven't heard the mk3, as i'm sure you've noted in reading reviews many people put it equal to or above the bose for it's noise cancelling capabilities. i think you'd be real happy with it.
the bose is the more boring choice, but there is a reason you see 50 million of them in airports at any given time: decent sound, great NC, great comfort, long battery life.

Thank you for the feedback! I've read few reviews comparing Bose QC35II and Sony WH-1000X M3, and in terms of sound quality, Sony seems to be winning. And they cost the same. I think I need to try both out to see which one is comfortable since I'll be wearing them for long hours, and as you said comfort is very important.

Where will you be using them /what sound qualities do you prefer in music? Generally Bluetooth headphones aren't going to be as good as corded, but once you start spending $200 it's all about personal preference.
You know, when I initially made this thread over a year ago I thought it never got any replies, and I just figured it was a mediocre thread idea that no one was interested in - which is fine. Then I was randomly thinking about it this morning for no reason whatsoever, and I come to find out it's been bumped, and people had actually replied back in 2018. Funny little coincidence. I'll have to check out some of those suggestions.

postjack was right, I think I'm going with Bose QC35II instead of Sony M3. I had a chance to test both yesterday, and while the sound was mostly the same for me, Bose was slightly more comfortable.

Glad you like them! And when you fly with them once you'll never fly without them.
The QC35s really are just an enjoyable experience. I had a pair for a bit and ended up deciding that they weren't appropriate for what I wanted them for, but I found them very easy to forget about while I was wearing them, which is what I want in a pair of headphones.

Anyone else have Grados? They're open-back cans so the sound bleeds, making them non-ideal for use in public, and you can still hear the environment somewhat if your sound isn't cranked, but the open can design is possibly best overall for sound quality, and the SR60e's are basically as good of sound quality as you're going to get without using an amplifier (ie, listening on your phone) and they go for 80 bucks. I had a pair of 60s and upgraded to 80s at some point. Those were like 100 or something. My default is those and also having a pair of decent earbuds for using outside, working out, flights, etc. Overall, a pair of 80s and a decent portable headphone amplifier is probably your best bang for your buck.
Grado makes higher-end cans, too, but unless you're going for real audiophile shit, like listening to a nice turntable or CD player through an amp, or doing sound editing, those are probably gonna be overkill.

Wouldn't recommend flying with those, obviously.
i used to be a big grado fan. i started with the sr60, like everyone, and over the years have owned and sold the sr225, sr325i, hf-1, hf-2, rs-2, rs-1, ps500, gs1000, ps1000, and even the hp1000. the hp1000 is one of the best headphones i've ever heard but it made me nervous owning something so old with no available replacement drivers. i've also owned a few of their phono cartridges.
it's been a while since i've listened to a grado but i remember loving the sr60, sr225, and especially the RS-1, which is an all-time classic headphone. grado really nails the midrange "crunch" of electric guitars. having said that once you get into the higher end headphones like the gs1000 or ps1000, the sound to me is actually not as good as the cheaper headphones, and therefore certainly not worth their high cost.
as an aside, i've had a shitload of headphones, headphone amps, source components, etc. come through my hands, and a good amount of speakers, phono carts, etc. as well. i'm an old school head-fi/head-case guy, i've flirted with almost every form of snake oil or audiophile nonsense out there, short of expensive cables or magic pebbles you put on your speakers. as such i'm always happy to help people avoid falling into the same traps i did in pursuit of great sound.
