i listened to colors from beck on spotify and when it ended, "Debra" from midnight vultures started autoplaying and my first thought was "this is better than eny of those songs I just heard."
I wasn't a big fan of Wow as a single, but I thought it was one of the better songs on the album.I liked seventh heaven as well. May need some more listens. It's a good pop record, but not a great pop record. He's always either authentically earnest and beautiful (sea change, morning phase) or delightlfully quirky and humerous. And I didn't feel either of those on Colors.

I don't really understand the Hundred Waters love. I've tried to get into that album a couple times but meh.
IMO the back half of the album is the best and the best song is blanket me. The first time I heard it was on the radio and I thought it was a bjork song I hadn't heard before.

To be fair, "Debra" is a stone-cold classic
yeah, and midnight vultures is probably his best. so, it wasn't really fair. but it really drove home the point that the album was mostly meh.
I was going to make some trite comment about how the first few tracks on MASSEDUCTION are a bit boring compared to the rest of the album, but you know what? This whole thing is awesome.

It's Not That Deep or anything but I can't stop thinking about how good the "How could anybody have you?/How could anybody have you and lose you?/How could anybody have you and lose you and not lose their mind?" lyric is

The new Beck album is good, but it's good in the way Phoenix albums are good, not in the way Beck albums used to be good. It's just not very interesting. This album could easily have been made by someone not named Beck and barely have gotten noticed.
Beck - 'Colors' and 'Dreams' stand out, but everything else seems like plug-and-play 2017 alt rock. I agree w/ Meatball that it's just not very interesting. Almost ready to move on from this one.
Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile - My initial take is disappointment, but I was admittedly overhyped for this one. 'Over Everything' is a cool track, but I've found myself flipping over to Courtney's last album a few times now.
St. Vincent - This one is still growing on me, not sure where it'll land. She's undeniably super talented, I am just having a tough go at getting into it with all this other music to listen to.

St. Vincent just blew my mind. Those first 4 songs are actively bad in my opinion, but they will soon be forgotten thanks so a spectacular rest of the album.
but I was driving....maybe it's just that Lotta Sea Lice is a better driving record (on the surface you'd expect that I guess), definitely want to re-listen to Masseduction.

Strange,
the stretch from Pills to Los Ageless is my favorite on the record.
I might be in the minority here, but I didn't enjoy Masseduction as much as I thought I would. Will give it another spin or two when I'm in a better mood, but not sure if that's gonna change my mind.

this.
it's great for I'm on my commute / walking places / could be acceptable 'I have guests over and need some good music that's universally acceptable and is also upbeat enough' music as well
AKA I've enjoyed it and it won't be an all-time fave but I'll listen here and there.
Interestingly Pitchfork gave Masseduction a worse rating than they have any past St. Vincent album
on the one hand, it feels like a perfectly reasonable score to me, but on the other, I get the sense that that reviewer is one of their more critical writers. I think she's had one BNM in like 5 years of reviewing

She didn't even do all that much criticizing of the album, just kind of analyzed it and then slapped that score on it. But you're right that it's far more a reflection on the writer than Pitchfork

just checked and yeah, this is true, and it was for Vulnicura.
I really like the album and thought it was a good review, though.
