NIN (Pearl Jam slot) / Arcade Fire (LCD slot) / Phish (Dead slot)
Chance (J Cole slot) / Lana Del Rey (Ellie's spot) / Beck (Death Cab)
School boy Q (Mack) / Grimes(M83) / MMJ (LN Tame) / Pretty Lights(LN Tame 2) / Avett Brothers (Ween)
Look like this :
NIN / Phish (2 sets) / Arcade Fire
Beck / Chance the Rapper / Lana Del Rey
MMJ (LN Which) / Pretty Lights (LN Which 2)
Avett Brothers / Grimes / Schoolboy Q
Thoughts??? Who would go???
Schoolboy Q isn't pre headlining on that What Stage. That'd be super ridiculous. In fact he's more of a packed late night or pre headlining rowdy tent act. I mean maybe if he grows and starts getting some sort of stage production, he could get the Which Stage. But I don't see that happening yet. He'd be closer to having the Tyler the Creator slot than Macklemore.
Edit: and also Grimes wouldn't fit M83's slot. I'm going to use a similar argument but her stage show is also pretty minimalistic. She would have made a perfect late night act for Saturday this year....but for some reason that didn't happen. But she'd either be late night or evening Which Stage show like sort of where Halsey was. I'd much prefer late night though (assuming the conflicts wouldn't be heartbreaking)

Not super related to headliners, but I had a playlist on that played Janelle Monaé and James Blake back to back and holy shiz would that make a superb LN tent

This seems very possible but NIN wont be number one. You could prob add someone in front. Make it: Foo Fighters - Arcade Fire - NIN - Phish
im willing to bet that FF's "hiatus" lasts at least until the end of summer 2017 so i doubt they'll hit up fests next year. call it Drake - Arcade Fire - Phish - NIN

Yes please. I doubt Janelle gets LN though. Evening Which is what I'd guess.

Would attend and be pretty pumped about it as well.
Mediacom is yet to come set up internet in my new apartment so I had a few days without much internet access. I spent a couple hours making a full lineup too (I think I've got 99 acts here) because I can only watch so many movies. Anyway, I feel like this would be pretty good and realistic for the most part. Really have no idea who would be the #1, so I just threw on Drake because I think he makes the most sense with the rest of the top couple lines. Also, I have no idea where Maxwell would be billed.
Drake | Arcade Fire | Paul Simon | Lorde | Beck | Fleet Foxes | Kygo Chance the Rapper | Justice | the 1975 | St. Vincent | Chet Faker | FKA twigs | Sturgill Simpson Zhu | ScHoolboy Q | James Blake | Maxwell | Young the Giant | Phantogram | Big Gigantic | Superjam Local Natives | Esperanza Spalding | the Disco Biscuits | the Avalanches | Future Islands | Devendra Banhart TLC | Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals | Yo La Tengo | Carly Rae Jepsen | Danny Brown | Baauer | Logic Megadeth | Kehlani | Louis the Child | the Tallest Man on Earth | Glass Animals | Buddy Guy | Dirty Heads | Cherub De La Soul | Everything Everything | Duke Dumont | Sky Ferreira | Bonobo | Wolf Alice | Kaytranada | Gallant Car Seat Headrest | Nosaj Thing | Gojira | Savages | DIIV | AlunaGeorge | Wolf Parade| Broods | Wild Nothing Jack Garratt | Skepta | Pete Yorn | Foxes | BadBadNotGood | Rhye | Wye Oak | Thundercat | Låpsley | Wild Beasts Preoccupations | D.R.A.M. | Mr Carmack | Jagwar Ma | Julia Holter | Lido | Gregory Porter | Nothing But Thieves White Lung | dvsn | Kevin Morby | Porches | Denzel Curry | Andrew Combs | Lewis Del Mar| King Tuff | Angel Olsen Pinegrove | the Soul Rebels | Gold Panda | Steve Mason | Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes | Empress Of the Hotelier | Honne | Frankie Cosmos | Mother Falcon | Moses Sumney

I think this is probably the most realistic lineup I've seen so far. It's about on par with 2015 which is what I expect them to aim for next year.
What has NIN done since 2009 that would bump them up from the #4 spot?
To be fair, 2009 was a really weird year for headliners. You had Phish playing 2 shows on two seperate nights with Beastie Boys playing before Phish on one of the nights. I mean NIN was behind Springsteen, Phish, & Beastie Boys. I was sad to see them tossed on the Which that year because they were the band to finally get me to go to Roo. However, I still think it's one of the greatest shows that Roo has ever had. I mean, late night NIN with a marathon setlist was just perfect. Next time around if they are booked, I think they deserve a headlining spot. Oh and since 2009, Trent won an oscar. I doubt that gives them a boost though.

I dig it. Almost all of these artists are on my list of possible acts. A couple of weird placements (Megadeth, Glass Animals, and Angel Olsen all feel a little too low, Car Seat Headrest feels a little high), also I'd really like you to find a way to squeeze at least one of Grizzly Bear, Portugal. the Man, or Jim James in there.

remained semi relevant while the ratio of plausible headliners to festivals has dropped considerably
What makes you say that second part? Outside of trying there best not to repeat I would say that if anything festivals have more headliner options. Also if I look at most lineups from before 2009 some of the headliners wouldn't even be considered headliners now at most festivals. I feel like if anything our headliners need more name recognition than ever (obviously we have exceptions like LCD).

That's because tastes change... the fact that they billed the Dead and Widespread Panic over Neil Young and James Brown says a lot about how huge those jam acts were and how central they were to the festival scene
Also holy fuck 2003, James Brown at #4 and Allman Bros at #5 is just insanely strong, these are some of the best live acts of all time

NIN's shows in 2013-2014 were amazing and they are totally worth a top slot.
However, I don't see them playing anything other than as a late night stage closer for the following reasons:
1) NIN headlined LL, Outside Lands and MIA in 2013, and word on the street was that their stages didn't attract such large crowds compared to other acts at the same fests. 2) Trent had miserable experiences as a subheadliner at European festivals such as Pukkelpop and Reading/Leeds in 2013, and will thus only accept festival slots that will attract a strong dedicated crowd. So subbing on the What Stage is out of the question and playing on the Which Stage before the main headliner seems beneath him.

Yeah, Grizzly Bear is one of my all time favorite bands so I'd love to see them there. That's kinda why I didn't include them though. I don't want to be disappointed when they don't show up. Same goes for Radiohead, Sigur Rós, Sufjan, Bon Iver, etc. I actually think next year has massive potential (at least in regard to my taste), and the pressure is certainly on for Bonnaroo to produce an improved lineup, so I'm a little more hopeful for something strong than I probably should be. But even then, I'm just trying to assume there is absolutely no chance for those favorites of mine, so that if it actually does happen, I'll be ecstatic.
I agree Megadeth is a little low, and probably Angel Olsen too, but I think Glass Animals could vary quite a bit in their placement. It really depends on the success of their upcoming albums. They may end up needing to be a lot higher, but right now this seems about right to me. I also have a tremendous love for CSH, so I know I overestimate their popularity. By the way, is Jim James supposed to be touring or releasing something soon? I've seen him come up a few times recently, but hadn't heard any actual news about him.

The last thing I heard was that he hopes to put out another solo album by the end of this year and a Jacket album next year. Not sure if he's still on that timeline or not.
No possibility of #3 with a new album coming out this Friday? Bon Iver seems to be on the same popularity level as LCD Soundsystem or DeadMau5. But I don't really know for sure so that's why I ask

I could see them being 3 at Coachella but like Juggs said, they'll probably stick to these indie fests anyway.
