Random question, when did the RHCP become uncool to like?
Stadium Arcadium IMO.
RHCP has always had some cheesiness in their songs, but Dani California and Hey Ooh are real cheesy. For the record I do enjoy the album, I actually played it a couple weeks ago. Steve Hoffman mastered the vinyl and purely fidelity-wise its one of the best sounding rock/pop records of the compression/brickwall era.
Pretty sure Paul Tollett has said that the inspiration behind Coachella was the big Euro festivals, and Coachella predates Bonnaroo by three years.
Shit, forgot about Coachella.
So while I can't congratulate Phish for birthing the entire US festival industry, I still admire their ability to put on 60,000-90,000 attendance festivals and have them run smoothly during an era when other festivals (until Coachella in 1999) were a disaster.
Jazzfest has been around since the late 70s and the furthest thing from a disaster during the 90s.

I think you nailed it. Like you, I enjoy the album, but Dani California and Snow were overplayed to the point where people who weren't big RHCP fans to begin with got really sick of them. It doesn't help that they followed up Stadium Arcadium with two pretty lackluster albums.
I like the idea of jam bands closing out on Sunday because it's an opportunity for most of Bonnaroo to come together in the What Field to hang out and soak in the last moments. Dead & Company was the perfect closer this year for me.
Why do you need a jamband for that?
I think jam bands are cool because there's a lot of different ways to enjoy them. Everybody just sort of does their thing whether that's standing up and doing a little hippie dance, or just laying in the field staring at the stars, tripping out for the last few hours, or just hanging out in the back and vibing with your buddies. They just seem to provide the best atmosphere for everyone to freely enjoy themselves however they feel in that moment and I think that's a nice way for Bonnaroo to close out. But I'm not even a jam band guy, I'm just speaking from my experience with Dead & Company vs Billy Joel and Elton John.
I will answer. Without looking what is the names of their last 4 albums?
aeroplane roller coast stadium arcadium porno for pyros dave navarro
Why do you know that? Anyway for me its similar to the Aerosmith discussion from the other day. Use to listen to them a lot when I was in high school but then they put out some terrible music and their older stuff just hasn't aged well with me.

Did you even read the names he put down?
Porno for Pyros is fucking Perry Ferrell's side deal and Dave Navarro? Seriously? I had to google what the last four were and he has one correct. The Getaway I'm With You Stadium Arcadium By The Way are the correct answers and nobody knows the last two at least (in order of most recent to least recent).

Whoa, I'm no RHCP fan, but let's not insult them by comparing them to the shameless bloated corpse that is Steven Tyler. Whatever faults RHCP may have, none of them can hold a candle to "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" or "Pink" or "Crazy" or "Jaded".
Also, speaking of Aerosmith not playing Bonnaroo, it sounds like the "farewell tour" may not even be a farewell tour.

True but it seemed to work fine with Joel and Elton as well. They were made fun of on here for months but then the What field was a giant singalong and the people I was around seemed to be having a good time.
I don't necessarily need it to be a jam band but I do understand the logic of having someone that isn't universally wanted by all (so many can pack up and hit the road). I do think it would get tired if we ONLY had 3 or 4 bands to choose from each year.
If anything, I'd rather see it turn into something that Newport has done a few times....make it a big guest-filled sendoff. Almost like a Superjam but have an act/artist lead it and bring out guests for some unique versions of songs.
While I actually enjoy Billy Joel I do remember thinking after his set, what an awkward way to end off Bonnaroo. Like the naked people, the glowsticks, the drugs.....it just didn't really seem to mesh with Billy Joel's music

Well, maybe the naked people with the glow sticks should have read the fucking schedule and seen that Billy Joel was closing and taken their drugs the other three nights.
Stadium Arcadium and By The Way are both huge albums (and actually both pretty great), but the singles from SA definitely got wayyy too much radio play and then their best member left and they have since put out two boring albums. Plus, for a band that at one point was playing shows quasi-nude and having a stupidly good time, they started taking themselves a bit too seriously (see: Flea's National Anthem and reaction to its criticism).

Tom Petty was the best Bonnaroo closer.
Somebody asked me right before Billy Joel if I knew where to find molly.

yeah but new orleans doesn't count since it's another planet, a badass planet where the average resident cares significantly more about music than the average human.

That explains everything! I totally get it now. Man I love being an alien.

Oh man, this totally just brought me back to middle school. I remember being obsessed with "Jaded" after the music video was released.
I hold the opinion, perhaps erroneously, that the US would never have finally developed the festival culture it has without Phish throwing successful festivals from '96-'03. And I believe Phish taking a hiatus in 2002 was a strong impetus for the original Bonnaroo happening to begin with. And the Phish community simply wouldn't exist without the culture borne from the Grateful Dead, so the jamband closer seems an appropriate recognition of where all this came from.
Pretty sure Paul Tollett has said that the inspiration behind Coachella was the big Euro festivals, and Coachella predates Bonnaroo by three years.
Didnt the expansion to 3 days and adding camping come after bonnaroo? When I think euro fests, Glastonbur comes to mind with multiple days of shows and on-site camping, more like the early phish fests and bonnaroo than a 1 or 2 day event with off site lodging.
Not trying to start a coachella vs bonnaroo rooster measuring contest or anything, it just seems coachella grew sort of organically and bonnaroo was the big capp dog's euro clad athena
Future isn't a headliner, he's not taking the What Stage at like 9pm with just a DJ and yelling over a backtrack. It's just not happening. Also while Future is popular, people don't love him in the same way people love Kendrick or J.Cole.
This is pretty much dead on. I saw Future when he played at Vanderbilt (sold out the festival for the first time in years) and granted he can make a catchy hip-hop autotuned mumble song, but he has no talent live. He showed up late, stood there yelling for 45 minutes and you couldn't tell what was him and what was the track. Also DJ Esco was annoying as fuck. Even with his popularity, Bonnaroo would be way better off booking him at 5-10 and getting a bigger EDM/hip-hop name for the mainstream kids
Last time I saw that guy was at Waka 2011 during Here Come The Mummies! on Sunday. He couldn't even get into that one. He just stood on the side of the stage looking pissed.
I'm wondering if they avoid an EDM headliner next year and go EDM second line heavy like ACL is this year. Maybe put both Major Lazer/Jack U and Kygo on the second line.

I mean, this year, the highest booked EDM wasn't even in the top 3 or 4 ines. My personal desire isn't for them to book lower ranking names, but for them to quit with the generic EDM bookings and get higher quality electronic/EDM artists. Above & Beyond, Prydz, freakin UNDERWORLD OR CHEMICAL BROTHERS.
Either way, doubt they follow ACL's lead. That's just something ACL does every year at this point (2014 it was Skrillex & Calvin Harris. 2015 was Disclosure, Deadmau5 and Bassnectar, etc).
Bonnaroo '15/'16/'17/'18/'19 - ACL '13/'14/'15/'17/'18 - Fun Fun Fun '14 - SXSW '13/'14/'15 - FPSF '16
2019 Shows: 4/30 - Vampire Weekend 6/28 - Father John Misty & Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit 9/6 - Cardi B w/ Teyana Taylor 9/28 - Vulfpeck w/ The Fearless Flyers

Sounds like Here come the Mummies! didn't bring their A game. I bet he would've gotten down to Us V Them.

I was wishing I could find some sort of drug during Billy Joel because I was fucking hating it.

Hard to believe above and beyond hasn't been to the farm. They have the popularity and the quality. I'm also hard pressed to believe they cost that much. Underworld and chemical brothers I get even if it's kind of lame that they probably don't even try.

Playing a little catch up here but as someone not totally into Jam Bands (but have gone to shows locally here) I like the Jam Band Sunday headliner. It's a nice change of pace and overall kind of showcases what Bonnaroo was initially founded on.
Also: Future is only relevant because his baby mama (Ciara) is dating a football player (Russell Wilson) and he can't seem to get over that.
