Just so I don't forget to return to albums I like I'm going to try and rank this month: 1. Bon Iver 2. Danny Brown 3. Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam 4. Warpaint 5. Preoccupations 6. Drive-By Truckers 7. Local Natives 8. Solange 9. Wilco 10. Banks
Numbers 5-8 can probably all be switched around depending on my mood.
Most of Inforoo will jerk off to Goat and Beck, Rummy and I will probably vote for Conor Oberst or some other dippy singer-songwriter shit, and Dave and GL will vote for some shit I've never heard of and will never listen to.
I was gonna argue this but yeah. He and I do have a decent amount of solo votes.
HM: Preoccupations, Bon Iver, Nick Cave, Warpaint Solange, Angel Olsen , Danny Brown, Regina Spektor, Kool Keith, Jenny Hval and missing so many more. A really great month for music.
I thought I liked 22, A Million but then Anthony Memetano gave it a 5, so I guess I don't like it now.
Anthony Fantano is from my area, and patronizes the same record store that I do. Everyone who works there hates his guts.
I only watch him sometimes because he has some entertaining editing and some interesting perspectives, but he does seem like a massive ass. It's interesting that you're near him though, have you ever ran into him?
This album left on a strong impression on me, and since this is my first time voting, I feel compelled to write up a brief analysis. First and foremost, this is a concept album that focuses rather bluntly on the complications of mental illness. It's dark and emotionally exhausting, but in a hauntingly beautiful way. Holding true to the album title, the opening track (appropriately named "Anxiety") sets the tone for the rest of the album. From start to finish, the theme of crippling anxiety is pervasive and relentless. The instrumentation, lyrics, and vocals combine to effectively capture the overwhelming feelings of fear, self-doubt, and dissatisfaction commonly associated with mental illness. My favorite song is the multi-part, 11-minute "Memory", which unmistakably represents the musical and emotional climax of the album. The first part of the song slowly and deliberately maneuvers through feelings of failure and unfulfillment. After about 3 minutes, the vocals and guitars recede and give way to a percussion transition. This transition steadily builds in tempo and intensity, adding layers of instrumentation along the way, until it finally erupts in a cathartic release that is simultaneously tragic and uplifting. Definitely one of my favorite songs to be released this year.
Gonna go with this too
2. Beach Slang 3. Ex-Cult 4. Tycho 5. Drive-By Truckers 6. Danny Brown 7. Klangstof 8. Warpaint

This is a rare circumstance that I'm kind of okay ignoring Jagwar Ma. The space between Howlin' and Every Now & Then is fuckin' huge.
You said it. Howlin' is one of my favorite albums of the last five years, but the new one is completely half-baked. Every time it sounds like they're about to do something interesting, they fuck it up.
I really wanted it to be good, but Howlin' is such an amazing album so the possibility they were going to recreate that excellence wasn't large, but they could have done much better than this. The shame is, that there are people who will have this one as their first exposure to them and they'll think it's great.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
02) A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings by Beach Slang 03) Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds 04) Blood Bitch by Jenny Hval 05) MY WOMAN by Angel Olsen
Angel Olsen - My Woman This album wholly flows wonderfully together, comes from a place of truth and honestly came to me in a month packed full of emotional instability. It benefits from brief storytelling, excellent singing and a consistently, powerfully, albeit non-intrusive, musical presence. Descriptive masturbation aside, I really enjoy this album.
Second place goes for a tie between Warpaint and Nicolas Jaar. Fuck, what a weird sentence that is. Major shout-outs to Preoccupations, Bon Iver, All Them Witches' live album, Beach Slang, Tycho, Wight, Solange.
2. hamilton leithauser and rostam - I had a dream that you were mine 3. warpaint - heads up 4. drive by truckers - american band 5. scott hirsh - blue rider songs
HM: merchandise - a corpse wired for sound kishi bashi - this exceeded expectations by a lot beach slang - lots of fun and will get a lot of spins, but there was just too much other good stuff this month. kaitlyn aurelia smith with suzanne ciani and daniel lanois both put out some beautiful ambient/instrumental stuff.
I completely forgot about james vincent mcmorrow until tonight when I was going over what I listened to this month. It's the best record he's made, I think. I was a bit disappointed in the allah las and wilco releases.
Most of Inforoo will jerk off to Goat and Beck, Rummy and I will probably vote for Conor Oberst or some other dippy singer-songwriter shit, and Dave and GL will vote for some shit I've never heard of and will never listen to.
In all fairness, my vote is for a record from a band in your new hometown. They happen to be playing there tonight with Animal Collective and Mac DeMarco. I suggest not skipping that and getting there early. If you can and all.
Prepare to get punched in the heart when you do.

Ah that little Pabst festival thing? I wanted to go to that, but I have work unfortunately. And it's super rainy here today. Might try to make it to the Vulfpeck afterparty though.

I'm actually relieved I missed the voting deadline last month because it was way too hard. My vote probably would've gone to Sirens though. Bon Iver, Rostam + Leithauser, Solange, Nick Cave, and Jenny Hval were all excellent too.
Also Hiss Golden Messenger's new one is fantastic.

I'm stuck on HGM, too. While not as good as "Heart Like A Levee" but along the same lines, you should check out the new MV & EE album "Root/Void".

I basically made myself pick one. If I had done so at a different time that day, I might have picked a different album. Too many good albums that were really difficult to pit head to head.

Oooh thanks for this. Not familiar with the band but I think I'm in love with everything Woodsist puts out. Excited there's a new one to check out.

Though many albums lost the September Album of the Month we are all winners right now.
I typically don't like, maybe even hate spoken word-type albums, but this Kate Tempest is great.
As for the August and September, I wasnt really blown away by anything except for a) how terrible die antwoord was and b) how many ppl here loved that Nick Cave album.
Thanks to whoever pointed out Klangstof though; that definitely would've gone under the radar for me without a recommendation
Since we're 3/4 of the way through, and because I was updating my lists, I was looking over the results so far for the year.
I think the albums we collectively dropped the ball on the most, vote-wise, are probably ANTI an A Seat at the Table. The former has had significant staying power, at least for me, and the latter made an immediate impact for me but never really stood a shot at competing for the September title due to its late release date.

Heart like a levee is great.
If you're digging HGM, check out the Scott Hirsch album from last month. He plays on HGM albums and was in the touring band too. That album (blue rider songs) also features Phil cook and a tune written by Steve gunn.
