The statistic I wonder about fests and people's assumptions of a good line up is a reasonable expectation of 1) Bands you can reasonably see. Versus 2) Numbers of bands on the line up I want to see.
Perfect example of this is Coachella who books an enormous number of bands, on any year, that Id love to go see. Except, reasonably I'm going to miss MOST of them. I'm also not a huge fan of doing 3 bands in the same time slot and hitting 20 minutes of each (unless they are bands I'm completely unaware of and I am just exploring).
So when it comes to a fest like Coachella, I'm not going to fanboy over a top 10 that I will realistically enjoy 3 artists. This is essentially why I prefer smaller fests.
On the other end of the spectrum is something like Utopiafest. It is maxed out at 2k-ish volume, and bands have no overlap. So I have the opportunity to see 100% of the line-up.
In the case of Hangout, 2013-14-15 all head Headliners Id want to see (except ZBB) and a good amount of undercard for me to have only a handful of conflicts. Essentially 3 full days of music.
2016 lacked 2 decent Hlers but Foals in the tent was great exception. Also, a diminishing undercard.
2017 has 1 good HL (mumford), a wash HL for me (Frank Ocean), and a let down but I suppose I could have fun (21P). The undercard however is pretty empty aside from a handful of artists. Which is why Im not going.
i feel you. for me this lineup works but only b/c there's lots of stuff here that I've never seen/had to pass over at other fests in previous years (Mumford, Weezer, Young the Giant, Mac Demarco, Local Natives, Bob Moses, Band of Horses) or acts i just never thought about seeing at hangout but feel perfect (Sigur Ros, Franz, Shaggy) then the new discoveries (Rufus du sol, warpaint, mutemath, rainbow kitten surprise, LEwis Del MAr, barns courtney, Foreign Air). MGMT has been on my bucket list since my first roo 2010 and i couldnt think of a better setting. Chance make up show (prolly at sundown) will be magic. Frank Ocean at the gulf = splooge.
Tack on the major, dj snake, dillon francis, asap ferg, lil yatchy, snakehips, nghtmre, cash cash louis the child and all the other untz should be a good weekend.
edit: S/O the suffers, the strumbellas, the head & heart, white reaper, LP, kungs, bishop briggs
This is an example of different strokes...because I feel about the same about the HL (Mumford = yes, Frank = no, 21P = if my crew wants to, Chance = kinda yes) but the undercard has a lot to offer me, even before I dug into the whole lineup. Weezer, Band of Horses, Marshmello, Sigur Ros, Local Natives, MuteMath, Major Lazer, MGMT, Head and Heart, Franz Ferdinand, Shaggy, NGHTMRE, Strumbellas all had appeal to me right off. Then after digging around I added Barns Courtney, White Reaper, Bishop Briggs, Warpaint, Lewis Del Mar, Kungs, Louis the Child, The Suffers and Mondo Cozmo to the see list.
Now, that is less subsantial than 2015 for me, but better than last year, and I still had a blast last year...so all good for me.
I do not recall one day passes...ever. They let everyone in free after the storms on the first Hangout Sunday. That was about it.
I've got to get south soon or going crazy. Hangout lineup is just not for me. I doubt the pre-party will be much better. Need to find another weekend where not so crowded and something fun happening. Has anyone heard if the Hangout restaurant is going to run their "locals" competition on the Friday nights leading up to Hangout? Some of those bands were awesome. Jamel won one of those.
Sandy beach >>> dirty farm but this year Bonnaroo lineup >>> Hangout lineup. Just saying.
How far do you think you could throw a mullet? Cause I've got the perfect weekend for you.
Been there and done that. Not faaaaar. Tooooo druuuunnnkkkk. My favorite weekends on the gulf are shared with friends or family, good weather, a surprise live musical event, not having to go broke, and finally, the smallest of crowds. The older I get, the more I prefer a tiki bar and a Buffet wanna-be playing songs I know by heart. Pretty senoritas and cold alcoholic beverages icing on the cake. The first six Hangouts were awesome. Last year three nights hanging with Dallas Moore at Florabama Yacht Club were priceless. I'm sure that if I get there...I'll have fun no matter which weekend.
I emailed Hangout press contact for some PR contacts and told her I had been holding off til now bc I had hoped the preparty lineup would have come out by now. She said "We will have Thursday lineup to share in early March." So I guess we have at least another week to wait for news.
I really thought they would drop some additions just before the price increase. Assuming the additions are mid-line and lower, it seems like a better tactic than waiting 'til after.
what did you pay? i think i always flew in for around 350 roundtrip but i flew into a different city 3 of the 4 times. I believe New Orleans was the most expensive to fly into for me.
5/9 The Polish Ambassador 5/10 Sean Paul 5/24 Andy Fraso & The UN, Pigeons Playing Ping pong 6/8 Gary Clark Jr. 6/20 SNACKTIME 7/12 Disco Biscuits (Atlantic City) 7/25 Beck w/The Philadelphia Orchestra 7/31 Justice 8/14 Ripe (Asbury Park) 8/24 Ripe (Philly) 8/25 Ripe (NY)
'The bottom was too fuckin crowded Just like a crab in a barrel I fought to get out if it But they wouldn't allow it And still i got out and go' Killer Mike

Usually we can do New Orleans for around $300 RT but even New Orleans was closer to $400. We ended up doing Pensacola for $400 might as well not have to drive 3 hours and pay the same price. Ugh.
Fuck them. Go cold turkey on that shit. Mulberry Mountain is back on uh huh huh April 20 since Backwoods fest has disputes with Lincoln County, OK residents and politicians. Haha. Hating on some 'necks. I don't even know the bottom 90 acts from 2016, and it's already better than Hangout. It's not Waka, but Sweetwater, Jazz Fest, Sasquatch, Beale Street/Memphis in may and Seabreeze in Panama City Beach are all around the same time as Hangout.

The lineup is kinda meh this year, but so are all the lineups. I think im looking forward to this hangout as much as the last 5 I have been to (maybe not, was so stoked for Outkast). We dont try and do all day anymore though, so the thought of heading south from Ohio, eating seafood, sitting on the beach and going "Oh Shit Weezer starts soon", has me excited. Especially after coming home from One Big Holiday, I am so ready to see the Gulf again.

Maybe I am becoming BeachBob
How was One Big Holiday? I want to experience that next year. Checking out MMJ at Forest Hills in July.

MMJ is my wife and I's favorite band. That being said if you were even slightly a fan or into music vacations, I cant see how most people wouldn't love this. The only rough part was on Wednesday when everyone in MMJ shirts were leaving, a bunch of early arrivers with Avett Bros shirts were just checking in.

C'mon man!...Seabreeze!? Don't get irrational. I'll be at SW420, SK, Sloss and maybe Beale (for Midnight Oil since the after market tix here are $200- $800!). There is only one line on the HO poster that doesn't have between 1-3 bands I would want to see, and Weezer, Sigur Ros, BoH, Shaggy and RKS are bands I have never seen that I would actually be excited to see. For you (as a semi local) it's just a lineup, but for most of us the vacation side of the fest is a major factor in wanting to go down there.
