As much as I love In Colour, it's going to win the award for Inforoo's most overrated album of 2015
As much as it pains me to say this, I agree with you. I compared it a while back to Kind of Blue, and how that's the one jazz album that even non-jazz fans know to be great, so it's been buried in hyperbole. Kind of Blue is an excellent album, of course, but it's so extolled by people who literally have no other touchstones within the genre to compare it to that it's actually probably a wee bit overrated, or at least overexposed. I feel like In Colour is having a similar moment, where people who really wouldn't ever be exposed to more nuanced electronic music are losing their goddamn minds over it. That's not to say it's not a great album (just as all except the most jaded jazz heads would agree that Kind of Blue is a marvel), but it is certainly getting an undue amount of recognition in that it has fans who normally wouldn't stray into the genre.
I agree with almost everything here. I'll take issue with Kind of Blue being overrated though. Overexposed maybe - it does give non-jazz fans a reach into the genre like Beethoven's Ninth or Vivaldi's Four Seasons does for non-classical fans. But despite all that, Kind Of Blue is fucking perfect. Someone just asked me today how many real, honest to God 10 out of 10 albums are out there. I said I didn't know off the top of my head, but Kind Of Blue is one of them.

That's so subjective its impossible. But I'm bored so here are my offerings
Revolver Abbey Road Sticky Fingers Beggars Banquet American Beauty Dark Side of the Moon Wish You Were Here London Calling OK Computer Highway 61 Revisited Blood on the Tracks Live in Folsom Prison Enter the Wu Tang Stop Making Sense Madvillain Late Registration My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Elephant Discovery Channel Orange Demon Days Plastic Ono Band Sound of Silver Downward Spiral Double Nickels on the Dime The Moon and Antarctica Everybody Knows This is Nowhere Aenima Doolittle Dummy Purple Rain Thriller Night at the Opera There's a Riot Goin On Velvet Underground & Nico
I had Kind of Blue in there but its kinda bullshit for me to include it when my other jazz is pretty limited. Which is exactly the point right?
there are a lot of 9's for me that other people would think are 10s and vice versa. But whatever. Here's a list to rip apart.

I'm generally opposed to lists of "perfect" albums that are that long. Those are all great, but stuff like Channel Orange and Demon Days are "merely great" albums.
My list is something like: Abbey Road Kid-A MBDTF Purple Rain Rumours After the Goldrush
and a strong argument could be maid for Beyonce S/T, but I'll table that for now.
For what it's worth, TPAB is one of the most overrated albums I've ever listened to. It's great, but it seems like people wanted so desperately for it to be a brilliant statement defining the modern epoch that they more or less willed it to be so. Like people just wanted so bad for this to be a generational album that they refused to believe it could be anything less than this. See, also, the recent Pitchfork review of Tame Impala's new record, where it's clear that Ian Cohen truly wants this to be his Kid A.
Unfortunately, I completely agree with this. I very much wanted it to be the greatest release of the decade, but in the post-coital clarity that came after listening to it the first time I could very much see that it wasn't. It's good, and there are parts that probably go deeper than I've yet to grasp, but IMO it's still a notch below GKMC.
Edit: I wonder how many reviewers listen to this album now and are like "Eh, it probably doesn't deserve the review I gave it."
I thought Section 80 was massively overrated, didn't really enjoy OD or the K Dot stuff, and I thought GKMC was going to be one of those classic debut rap albums where the artist pulls all the cards up their sleeves and pours an entire lifetime of experiences into it, then never lives up to it again. I love TPAB, it surpassed every expectation I had of it, and I think it deserves all the praise its gotten and more. My only issue with it is I wish there was a shortened version without all the intros, outros, I-remember-you-was-conflicted's, etc. I like that in the context of the entire album but I don't have 80 mins every time I want to listen to a song. Still it's my AOTY so far, by far.

Eh I get that. I almost divided the list in two between "widely accepted 10/10 albums" and "personal 10/10 albums" but said screw it.
Kid A, Gold Rush and Rumours should probably be on the list too though. I agree.
Love the album except the talking over past life.. Waiting for Deerhunter and Chemical Brothers... Listening to Dj Marky's debut album after 25 years. I'm still stuck on Alison Wonderlands Run Lp and Cold Ep.. To me the only Edm album to top Jamie XX.
I'm not sure how I missed this Alison Wonderland album, but this is REALLY good.
You can order both on vinyl limited too on her website.. run comes signed..
Nah b, my "no" at the end was like further enforcement of the prior clause. Should've phrased it as such, though: No. It is not better than In Colour.
Ah I see now. My b.
As much as I love In Colour, it's going to win the award for Inforoo's most overrated album of 2015
yea it's definitely top for edm along with alison wonderland, bassnectar, mord fustang, ratatat, leftfield, hermitude and probably Chemical Brothers when it comes out. I'm not sure about it being the clear #1 though. I'll give "Gosh" track of the year though..
Yeah Run is more or less a bunch of generic big-room EDM bangers. It's not terrible by any means, but it's really nothing out of the ordinary.
I usually hate the banger type big room dj's. This is done with more class, skill, and style. It's way more complex than most of that crap. She is an actually musician too, plays the Cello really well from what I read about her.
I saw more hyperbolic praise for HTPAB in the month following its release than I've seen for In Colour, I believe.
But yes I'm biased. I think In Colour>Butterfly.
Was going to say the same thing, saw way more over the top praise for HTPAB TPAB. Lots of people really like In Colour, but don't remember people claiming it AotY within the first day or two it came out (cough cough Son of a Beek).
I'll go on record being the first to say everyone was overrating TPAB.

A perfect 10 album is too subjective. I feel there is at least 1 perfect 10 album every other year. Even more so some years. Any album I can put on from beginning to end when it came out and I can still do the same now to me is a perfect 10.

Dude, stop. Lumping Alison Wonderland, Mord Fustang, Bassnectar and Hermitude in there is just embarrassing. What's with your weird hard-on for Australian musicians? Did you spend a semester there during college or something?
No they have just been pumping out some of the best music for the last 5 years. How does lumping those artists together make it embarrassing. All of those albums were great. This was a good year for EDM.

Section 80 massively overrated? By Inforoo or by reviewers? Or both? Im always amazed that TPAB gets so much praise around here but Section 80 doesnt.

Reviewers and hip hop fans in general I guess? Not Inforoo. I see many people putting it in the same category as GKMC and TPAB but I don't think it's even close.

I prefer Section 80 to TPAB but to each their own. I just thought it flowed better. Theres some 'track of the year' potential on TPAB but the album as a whole just didnt wow me I guess. OD is what I really revist over and over though

Because all of those artists are at best, generic Ultra/EDC style EDM. It's been a great year for electronic music, but not because of any of that shit.
And seriously, what's with your weird fetish for Australia?
The fact that Jimmy Fallon mentioned my favorite hip hop group from Australia on his show gives me hope that one day Bonnaroo will book them. Finally they are getting some recognition in the states! This is Eso's first solo single from the group Bliss n Eso
Anyone with inside info think there's a chance Bliss N Eso from Australia would be there? I highly highly doubt it, but it would make my Bonnaroo, like Tame impala did for me last year.. Some good Aussie shit out now
Flumes album is ok to me, even though it won best Edm for the Aria awards. For australian music I like Jagwar ma's album from last year better. Even Hermitude and The Presets are better in my opinion..
Your point? You do realize, you just spent more time trying to find my aussie posts then I do looking for aussie music?
It's not thought provoking though. It's all bullshit, he's just living off all the same stuff Tupac said. The struggle, I gotta hear about his struggle?! Screw that, the guys not even 30 yet and he has all these deep feelings. I call bull! I say he is some rich guy taking advantage of all of you kids thinking he is a genius, when all he is doing is repeating the same message we heard from Tupac forever. I never liked Tupac either if that says anything, but at least he was original.
I find it hysterical that there are reviews calling this Genius and picking it all apart like it's some Aesop Rock song that you can't understand unless you figure it out. He is no Aesop Rock or even Earl when it comes to poetry and Genius, and he is no hit making/headbobbing track maker like Jarren benton, Action Bronson, Run The Jewels, etc etc.. You want Poetic and Deep, check out Homeboy Sandmans track Illuminati.
Or do they have to mention Trayvon Martin to be deep.. Try this, it's got a great message and it still memorable and better then anything on Kendricks album! Kendrick should take notes. ... he mentions Trayvon so they must be Genius.

But like, he does have a point. Lots of Aussie talk.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
I've lost the AOTM thread. Could someone find it for me?
Sorry, people always feel the need to be the cool one to remark on anything I say. (This all started because I like Australian artists that others say are good as well?!?!?!)
It's amazing how 20+ years in, the Chemical Brothers are still able to make electronic music that doubles as stadium-level arena rock, and yet are able to do so with the quality and nuance that completely eludes more recent acts like Skrillex and Bassnectar and the like. All these new big stage EDM acts are more or less just trying (and failing spectacularly) to replicate what the Chems have been doing day in and day out for two decades.
I'm sure Skrillex and Bassnecter listen to the Chemical Brothers like

It's pretty great. I wasn't that wild of some of what they were doing in the mid-2000s, but their last two albums (Born in the Echoes and Further) have both really shown a revitalization.
I've only heard the track "Under Neon Lights" from the new album, but it is pretty great. Sounds like "Music: Response" from Surrender
Catching up on this thread I've learned one thing: according to that dumb Floridian, you're not allowed to have deep feelings until you hit 30.
I don't know what I've been doing the last 8 years, but I guess I've been emoting wrong. At least in 3 years I'll be okay feeling.
I don't know who said it, but he's actually right. This is called The National theory. You have to be at least 30 and lived through a lot of shit before you can relate to them. Right Dave Maynar
