D**n kids, I've never seen so much talk about "those types of people" and how there were so many of "this type of crowd" at Bonnaroo. The stereotypes & assumptions are running rampant around here. Sort of a let down, coming from such an open minded bunch of people.
I'm sure this thread will be killed, and I can understand why, but I just wanted to vent a little.
I agree man there were a lot of peeps sayin i hate those dave fan, etc etc it was a lil weird to hear i myself am not a huge dave fans but met some real cool ones at roo just kinda werid to hear
While I was there I didn't notice any problems between different groups of people. But it is still fundamentally stupid to even have "groups of people" in the first place. The idea that people are people are people should resonate way more than "oh you like phish have long hair, let us place you in this box".
We were sitting in our canopy late Sunday night and a few guys walked by, to which I said, "Whose got my mudd butt?" Well, apparently, this is a very offensive phrase in lot-land, because one of the kids threatened to "drag me out of that tent and beat my custy ass". Needless to say he was stumbling like a drunk-ass hobo, but it managed to bother me for a minute. Eventually we laughed about it, but still, why are some lot-pholk so jaded and bitter?
I think a lot of people hate on DMB and Dn'F soley because of the fans. It kinda ticks me off, because, even though I'm not big on them, I can surely recognize that they are a talented bunch of musicians. Maybe the song writing leaves a *little* something to be disired, but it's still decent. There is no reason why any self-described music fan should be hating on them, because, at the very least, they still have Buford.

ok, call me retarded, but what is a mudd butt?
Anyone who hates dave matthews obviously didn't catch his show on friday. That may have been the highlight of my trip.
I definitely wouldn't say I HATE Dave Matthews, he's alright, but I thought Friday's set was a little tired, and ending an hour early is VERY WEAK...
It's not about how open-minded we are it's about being human. I'm not saying your wrong I'm just saying that we as human beings need to categorize everything. I try not to but at times, but when someone cuts me off their always a jacka$$. Sure they might me a DR off to save a life, or some dad going to see his baby get born, either way, all I know is that they cut me off. With the Roo involved it's a very personal thing for some. Change scares us, again because were human. With different types of people coming in some people felt threatened, that their Roo would be forever changed. Their idea of Roo anyway. I saw frat shirts last year, this year I saw more, or I was paying more attention. Either way I kinda agree with you venting we should be more tolerent of people, in every aspect of life. We still will come across people that rub us the wrong way and they will be categorized. It's human nature. Like the guy that stepped on me, it might of been an accident, I doubt it by him looking me and and smiling. As for the DMB fans. I'll be the first ones to agree some of the fans annoy me and I don't really groove the music that much, but his fans like his stuff. The same goes for the Dead, and Phish fans, I'm not a fan of the tunes, some are great some aren't, in my opinion. Last year we caught some of the Dead, it wasn't our bag so we left, as we were leaving several people told us "Seeing the Dead is the only reason to come to Bonnaroo." Or some varation on that. I didn't think so, but hey he was a happy. So keep on venting, I'm not disagreeing with you I'm just adding my 2 cents.
I definitely feel the general gist of Aquarium Drunk's original post (I thought of you during "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" AD).
I think that it is worth pointing out how subjective everyone's experience of "Bonnaroo" and "the crowd at Bonnaroo" is. We really each only experience a small slice of it, and how we experience it depends a lot on our attitude and our mindset. Anything from the weather, to the music, to what you've ingested can change your perception of the same events 180 degrees. Of course its still meaningful for us to all share our own perceptions and experiences and if a lot of people had negative ones than it certainly means something. It seems to me like on this and some other message boards I've looked at, there is some kind of a snowball effect once some complaining/dissatisfaction starts popping up. I quess there was a similar effect with excitement and anticipation on this board before the festival.
You will see some scary, questionable sh!t at almost any concert you go to, and probably more so at a "jam-band" show than elsewhere if you are talking about questionable parenting of small children and really young people doing extreme drugs. If someone had told me that there were deaths at Bonnaroo '02 or '03, I would have had plenty to reflect back on and think "Wow, there was a really dark, dangerous vibe there." I think the difficult weather probably brings out the worst in a significant element in the crowd. I guess I am just saying that I didn't experience significantly more negativity than in previous years and what negativity I did experience probably took on a harsher edge because of the extreme weather and camping (related to crowd size) conditions.
I didn't see any more or less of "this or that type of people" than I did in previous years or than I would expect to see at a typical jam-band show. I didn't see a single person all weekend that I would have any basis to categorize as a "frat-boy" although I wouldn't have made any judgements on that if I did. I made some great Dave-fan friends at my campsite. Although I saw a lot of extremes and plenty of things that seemed scary to me (as I have every year), the vast majority of people seem to want to enjoy themselves and listen to music without bothering anyone else.
I do think the TWO days of pouring rain and being placed in a new, remote camping area had a negative effect on my weekend, but Bonnaroo is still a magical place for me that is starting to hold an important place in my life as an annual release/renewal. If I have any choice in the matter I will definitely be in Manchester in 2005.
