Camping. I've started wishing I just did the hotel route.
I arrived that time on Friday back in 2012 and got in with almost ZERO wait. Literally one car in front of me.
However, Car Camping was far from sold out that year-- there was a huge portion of camping spaces empty the entire weekend. Last year car camping passes definitely sold out, buyt I'm unsure what Friday AM looked like.

Let me know how this goes. I'm thinking I will do the hotel route next year. I'll be bringing the ball and chain, but he won't be doing the festival with me.
I stay in Palm Springs and it's only about a 10 minute walk from my hotel to the shuttle stop. No lines at all in the morning. Leaving at night can take a little longer. I think at most I had to wait 20 minutes in the Palm Springs shuttle line after the fest.

The shuttle company is very organized. I worked for them at OSL '11 doing shuttle ops, and they are the same people that do RLARS at Roo. Their customer service is very good and I've heard nothing but positive feedback from everyone that uses 'em.

Yep, seconded on all of this.
The shuttles are very convenient and comfy enough to sleep on during the ride back.

Making a point of riding the ferris wheel this year. Haven't found the time yet, but I'm sure the view is spectacular. Hoping for a small sunset/evening break in my schedule for the occassion.

I wonder how bad the lines are for this, and how much it costs.

I forget the cost but it was around 10 per, IIRC. The lines aren't bad during the day. Head in early before the crowds, and if none of the acts tickle your fancy take a spin. It's actually wonderful during the day, you get great views of the grounds, camping, the mountains, etc.
I do recall seeing insane lines during the evening though.
