i mean, Gorillaz have managed to tour with guests plenty. obviously its harder when those guests would have been massive names like Nile Rodgers / Pharrell, and maybe Julian Casablancas and Panda Bear as well. i don't think production cost would have stopped them if they really wanted to do it, just the other names not willing to commit to a tour like that.
I think it probably had more to do with the difficulty of integrating their old songs into a RAM-heavy show. Alive worked so well because the new Human After All songs wove in with the old stuff. They really only absolutely needed Pharrell imo as far as guests.
I think there’s a good chance one or both of them want to do a big time solo tour/project and this was a good way to head off a million questions about Daft Punk instead of whatever their working on.
Yeah just look at their long track record of doing countless interviews and spending all their time on media availability. Makes perfect sense they'd implode their entire identity after 28 years because they're afraid of big scary reporters they never interacted with and never gave a shite about.

They could have easily pulled off a guest-free RAM set without any stylistic clash. I just don't think they gave a shit about playing live anymore, especially within the bland world of post-Alive EDM that they fostered.

yeah did anyone realistically expect them to tour after that album anyway?
I'm a little disappointed that any hope of seeing them live is officially gone, but tbh it's not one I was holding out much hope for. Their "performance" of Get Lucky at the Grammys a while back really made me think that performing wasn't something they were much interested in any more.
It is a bit sad though; I didn't get into them until about 2012 or so when the person I was with at the time introduced me. I had heard a few songs prior to that and grew up with "Around the World", but otherwise did not have much of a connection. He introduced me to Discovery though and it was legitimately a life-changing experience - it opened me up to an entire genre of music that I still thoroughly enjoy exploring. I'll always have a fair degree of sentimentality and nostalgia attached to that album, as it was the soundtrack to a period in my life when I did a lot of changing. Though the dream of seeing them live is dead, the memories aren't, and that's nice.

They could still reunite in the future. The chances are the same imo. I always thought it would be at a random party though as opposed to all the worlds fests. I feel like RAM was built similarly to Despacio in that it was designed for intimate settings like club dance floors, not fields.

they should've gone totally full on EDM. reworks all of their songs to have similar sounding big beats, plenty of screaming let me see those fucking hands into the microphone, smoking lots of cigarettes, zero chill in the show just full on in your face peak after peak after peak, the only slow down in the show is when they completely turn the volume down inbetween tracks because there will be no actual song transitions. and instead of a pyramid just a big ass screen showing a 30 second clip of explosions and aliens on a loop.
Pour one out for the people that saw She Wants Revenge at Coachella 06 instead of Daft Punk.
Like the La Times music critic lol.
They were genuinely bored and achieved everything they wanted, and a few surprises like winning AOTY mightve pushed em away from doing more. I mean it was a big question as to how you follow up the pyramid as it is. If they were greedy bastards with zero integrity they wouldve signed a deal with a casino in Vegas and made mountains of money cause it wouldve never gotten tiring to see that show.

i would have preferred them to be greedy bastards and cashed out at some shows their fans got to see

Had somehow never listened to Alive 1997 before today despite knowing how great Alive 2007 is and folks... this one also absolutely slaps. No surprises there

: shrug :
I'll tell you this, the LA show sold out at the door cause I know you were able to buy all the way up til day of and even convinced a friend over the phone to grab one due to that. Its crazy to think how hyped the tour was and for some reason people werent scrambling more for tickets. I mean I get that everyone wanted floor, but who cares, get in the building for this. Some people can say it was the best $30 they ever spent on a show.
