Hey everyone--I'm wondering if any Bonnaroo vets can help me out with making it down to Manchester for Bonnaroo 08. I will have just finished my junior year in high school in June and I can't think of a better way to start my summer than by heading down to Bonnaroo. Several kids from my high school have gone over the past few years and come back saying it was a life changing experience.
The only problem is that my parents aren't really feeling the idea. If any of you could help me with positive aspects about to Bonnaroo to use to help convince them to let me travel from Chicago to Manchester for 4 days of musical bliss...PLEASE let me know!
First off, let them know how many of the bands you've "always" wanted to see. Make sure they know it's not just a music festival, but a festival for the arts as well.
Plus the one I find that works best, is that you "have always wanted to travel somewhere far." Most parents get that aspect of a high school student wanting to explore their boundries, and see how far they can go. Bottom line is to try and make your parents understand that your no longer a child, but a mature indivual. But honestly, that all depends if you ARE a mature indivual ;D
The most positive aspect of Roo is that it's a TRUE life experience... something you can't find just anywhere. There are a lot of things at Roo that your parents might object to, and I'm sure they know about them. Just make sure that you can handle all of that before you commit!
Yeah...if you get to go, good for you, but I can't say that I if I had teenage kids I would let them go to Bonnaroo unless it was a family thing. Just remember if they say no, it's their job to look out for you, and you always have Lollapalooza and Pitchfork as consolation prizes.
And chances are you'll be able to go to Bonnaroo the next summer anyway...

True that, my parents probably shouldn't have let me go to roo when i was in highschool, for good reason. ;D

Haha, yeah. I know. They're not exactly the most easygoing of parents, either. It'll be very difficult to impossible to convince them.
I'm just hoping for an excellent Lolla lineup--despite the fact that even as a devout Lolla-goer, I know it could neeever live up to Bonnaroo in terms of the atmosphere of the festival.

^^ it was tough to get my parents okay with the situation, and I was 18 going on 19!
I'm the oldest, and the only girl in the family, with two younger brothers.
So, it was tough, but I constantly kept spitting out facts about roo for months, left notes posted on the fridge, and things like that. I even offered to let my parents check out certain threads on inforoo.. not all of them though, lol.
Plus, I had a job and paid for my own ticket, and saved up most of my own money.. bonnaroo came before my birthday, so my parents gave me a couple hundred dollars for birthday money to be spent at roo.. so I had a really good excuse, lol.
You're parents will probably feel better if you went with a few friends, so try to get a carravan together! If your parents feel comfortable with the people you'll be riding with, and feel they are trustworthy, that's an even bigger bonus for you.
They're just trying to look out for their daughter, because they probably know what goes on at a lot of fests, and they don't want you to be associated with that.. which was what was going through my parents head.
Just be on your best behavior for the next couple months, make good grades, and hopefully they reward you with a trip to roo! Good luck and hope to see you there!

I would suggest against this. Unless you have balls bigger than my head.
Honestly I doubt they will let you go. I wouldn't unless I went with you. (In my case I hope my kids will want to go to Roo.) Tell them everything about roo and why you want to go. Don't get all crazy about it. Sit down and talk openly and honestly with them. They will ask about underage drinking and drug use I'm sure. I would suggest against being a liar at this point. Just be honest and don't freak out when they tell you no. Just ask them to think about it and give them the info on roo and the safety aspect of it. Tell them about the safty officers on horseback, tell them about the medical folks. Explain to them what you are planning on taking and why you can handle your self while there. Show them the stats on the violence at roo. (NONE!)
If that doesn't work. Plan ahead, tell them you plan on staying with your buddy for 4 days sometime in June. They will like that you have planned ahead. When it comes time to leave, tranq them and go to roo. When you come back I would expect them to arrest you but hey you went to Roo right?
Oh man I was in the same situation as you about a month ago. I am a junior in HS right now and I told my mom about it and she wasn't feeling it. She was afraid that my safety was in jeporody there but I told here about how the atmosphere was and she understood. But then she was worried about the 11 hour drive down there so she told me I needed to bring a friend and I might have someone to go with but you know it's hard to find a teenager that is willing to part with 230 for a ticket to a fest I just told them about. However my mom said if I can't find a friend she'd just drive down there with me and get a hotel somewhere while I'm at the roo. I'm with Kaleidoscope Kristen about trying to get a big group of friends together to go. Good luck, hopefully I'll see you down there!

My little brother went last year (he was 16 at the time, just out of his Sophmore year). He had the time of his life, and was never in danger. He's going again this year and my parents know he'll be fine. I honestly feel safer at Bonnaroo than I do most places. If your parents concern is that Bonnaroo is unsafe, assure them that it's actually quite the opposite. They do a great job with security and providing medical assistance and stuff. However, if your parents are conserned about you making it to Bonnaroo safely, well then its just a matter of whether or not you are a competent driver. As I mentioned, my brother went last year, at 16, but he did not drive. I would be concerned about someone with only a year or so driving experience making the long haul to (and more importantly) home, safely.
my first time was last year and i had just graduated from high school, but i had been asking pretty much every year of roo if i could go, it may take time but just keep asking is my advice, and if ur parents understand a lot about music and what it means to u and all that could help, that helped me
My friend who is a junior this year really wants to come, but has to get it approved by the rents. I really hope she does because she really loves the lineup this year and music in general. I know she'd have an awesome time, and she'll be safe with me, right?
Just be honest with them, tell them the truth.. There's great security, absolutely no D$ug$ whatsoever, and very sanitery conditions. It'll work!
Actually on a serious note I was 17 when I went to Woodstock '99 and my parents weren't really having it.. So I just said I was going somewhere else for the weekend. Seemed logical. When I came home with pink eye, severe sunburn and a Woodstock '99 T-Shirt they figured it out though:)

Unfortunately, my parents are not of the gullible type. I already snuck out to Lollapalooza last year and trust me...they did not appreciate it.
As for going with friends, at least 2 of my best friends have already confirmed that they can go. Sadly these 2 of my friends are the friends of mine that my parents trust least and dislike most...
This may sound stupid, but I'd buy a ticket and keep begging every so often leading up to the show knowing I havea ticket, then as a last minute desperate attempt use the fact that you bought a ticket in your defense, worst case sell that $hit on ebay. Seems like a good idea to me. Good luck regardless. I've been there.
Well it really depends on how your parents are. Like do you have a strict curfew, do they check your homework at night, do they make you call them every place you go?
I went to Coachella at 17 last year and my mom was none of the above. So yeahh you said they were tough, so just try to loosen them up a little.

my mom let me go on my first trip the summer in btwn Sophomore/junior year. To see tom petty and the heartbreakers in milwakee 03'. Great way to bust into the concert world. I also had good grades, and i finally convinced her to let me go. Good luck bros!

Haha..they don't check my hw or any crazy thing like that. They stopped caring about parental supervision between sophomore and junior year...but I still have an 11 curfew. So I would say yeah, they're pretty strict.
My son is also finishing his junior year. Would I let him go by himself? Nope. He and I are going together (Roo #3). It's our fun, "get away from the little brothers and sisters" bonding thing.
If your Mom or Dad are even *remotely* interested in camping and music, they would probably have a blast at Bonnaroo.
INVITE your dad... What a great way to celebrate Father's Day.

I agree. I would not let me daughter go either.
However, I have been taking her since she was 14 (she is 16 this year) and we have a blast together. We do our own thing for the most part once we are inside and meet up for certain shows but I would not let get her go across country and camp out for the whole time without me or some kind of responsible adult along with her.
So invite them If they like music at all, they will love it. And you don't need to stay together the whole time but it would make them feel like they have some control over the situation. Once they see what it is like, they might feel safer letting you go on your own the following year.

As "uncool" as it may seem to have some parents there, I know people who have gone to roo with families and have come back super bonded, so it might be a good thing.
I also know that while in high school I wanted to do my own thing (and I still do, haha) so I don't know if I'd want my family with me at the roo... it swings both ways I supposed.
BUT, if you're love for going to roo is strong enough to crack down and tell your parents, "Okay, if you won't let me go with friends, can one/both of you go with me?" that'll probably speak to them.
You still have a couple of months of planning and arguing, which was my case lol. We didn't buy our tickets until the first of June, so unless you're set on saving some bucks, you can still purchase them in say, April or even May.
I also considered doing the "telling my parents I'm going one place and actually go to Roo", but my conscious got the best of me, and honesty is really the best policy. Besides, they would KNOW if I was going on a supposed "camping trip" during the same dates as Bonnaroo.. lol.
Just be persistent summerinthecity, and REALLY stress to your parents that going to Bonnaroo would be the best end of the school year gift! I have hope for you!
