Tom Gabel, the lead singer of well-known Florida punk band Against Me!, has revealed to Rolling Stone that she is transgender, becoming one of the first “rock stars” to make such a proclamation, and will soon change her name to Laura Jane Grace. The group’s song “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” suddenly makes a lot more sense.
The announcement, part of a larger story that hits newsstands this Friday, says:
Gabel, who has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, will soon begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.
Gabel will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife Heather. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” says Gabel. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
He didnt really "come out". He's still married to a woman technically making him straight. He just wants a vagina and boobies.
He's coming out as a transgendered person. I didn't say he's gay or homosexual at all. The Rolling Stone article on the site is titled "Tom Gabel of Against Me! Comes Out as Transgender" so I went with that.

Interesting question. I imagine his voice may change a bit but i'm not really sure.
Genesis P Orridge in Throbbing Gristle did a couple years ago and his/her voice sounded pretty much the same (clearly changed somewhat due to age, etc.)
Interesting question. I imagine his voice may change a bit but i'm not really sure.
I would think it would change his/her voice.. Just because the extra hormones you take like estrogen/progestran. Plus, don't "they" kind of changed their voice anyway to fit more into the character? (I meant no offense at ALL with that sentence)
I just think that it might, but maybe it won't be bad?

From my recollection of a show I wanted on gender reassignment surgery, the hormones do cause some change in the vocal cords, and there is also the possibly that they will "shave" the vocal cords during the surgery to make them smaller resulting in a higher pitched voice.
As far as changes to the singing voice, it may, but singers can sing in a total different voice from their speaking voice (see Justin Vernon).
Is this real? I'm supposed to be seeing Against Me! w/ The Cult in June! Am I gonna be seeing Paula or Tom?
Maybe an inbetween version.
This is real. From Rolling Stone. There'll be more info when the magazine hits newsstands and the full interview is in there. May even make it as a cover story.
I hope they continue to play shows. I can't see why they wouldn't. I'm not a huge Punk fan but I dig their stuff and haven't got a chance to see them yet. Over all I think going through with this is amazingly brave. Against Me are big enough that people are going to know about this and they are going to become a major target for Westboro Baptist wannabes all across the country.

As I said in the random thoughts thread yesterday, I think this is exceedingly brave. I applaud her on being so open with this change. I cannot wait to read the article.
I wasn't a fan of the band but I may catch them now just to show support.

Tom/Laura has said that she's only going to receive hormone replacement treatments for the foreseeable future, so her voice won't change a bit. If she does get any vocal cords shaved, her voice will change.
I still can't believe how unbelievably brave she is. I hope this has encouraged anyone who is afraid to come out to their own friends and family, much less to the national media. I'm sure there's a lot of hate that's gone around the Internet aimed at Laura, but there's also a lot of support. It's going to be interesting to see what the reaction at the next AM! show is like. I hope it's one full of kindness and understanding.
