Last year I felt like a huge embarrassment, I was a 19 year old college kid and was too pooped to do more than one or two late night shows, which were undoubtedly mind blowing. I don't do energy drinks and stuff like that, so how do you find the energy to keep going after spending all day in the sun and dancing with barely any sleep by Saturday?
5 hour energy, drink plenty of water, no constant alcohol consumption, and take catnaps. Personally, I'm not at all embarrassed to lie down and nap on a comfy place inside Centeroo. I don't hear myself snore...lol. It also helps to be as physically fit as possible. Last year I did way better on the endurance thing - I had been exercising regularly since late June the year before. I'm still no triathlete, mind you, but getting a few pounds off and being a little more in shape helps.
We had a hard time last year for our 1st Roo as well. We are both 35 and aren't overweight or anything but we aren't in shape either if that makes sense. We don't really do a lot of physical activity.
We pretty much didn't leave our campsite until at least 4 but usually pooped out before the 2am bands started. It's not that we were really tired but our bodies just hurt so bad they were shutting down.
This year we vow to get in better shape so we can take all the standing and heat a little better. We have a big nature park near us and are planning on doing a ton of hiking this spring leading up to Roo.

In 2010 I was a fucking machine. I was in Centeroo until 4-5am catching all the late nights, then back inside by 1pm every day catching all the day shows. I have no clue how I did it. 2011 however was a different story. I usually didnt make the trek to Centeroo until 4-5pm, and was wore out by 2-3am.

I have no idea how I pull it off. I'm overweight and out of shape, but I start with the shows at noon and go all night. I think it's just pacing yourself during the day. If you want to see a daytime band but aren't super excited, find some nearby shade and sit while you listen. If nothing is going on, go sit in the Cinema Tent for a bit. Drink a ton of water. Remember to eat. Set up your camp to where you can sleep past 7am.

I'm closing in on 50 and did well last year. Having earplugs and fans help me sleep later in the am. I get up eat bananas and other fruit. Drink gatorade, lots of water. I plan naps into my schedule a good nap at 9 or 10 pm for just 30 mins. helps me go way late. I was usually in centeroo by 1pm in and out all day getting naps, sometimes just resting under some shade helps. I drink so I try to limit that until later. I'll be there at 3am jamming again this year!
Srsly I don't know how anybody does 4 days if they do LN and daytime shows too. You've got to recuperate sometime.
I did this last year. It wasnt as hard as yo would think. Adderall was a definitely a factor and is the best way to stay up and get you going the next day. Granted I slept for a couple of days after getting home.

I'm overweight, but not unhealthy. I have a pretty active job so I stay moving 9 1/2 hours of the day. That alone might be part of my stamina, because I am standing and walking all day, everyday.
I only do late night two nights and usually get back to camp by three or four, I'm up by seven and in centeroo when it opens. I used to have one soda for the caffeine(I cannot do energy drinks) but have since switched to coffee or mochas, fruit and protein.
There are plenty of times when all I want to do is sit down and not go anywhere else, but I tell myself that this is only four/five days out of the entire year and I am not going to get them back...just truck through and pain or fatigue (Obviously not to a dangerous level, know your limits, sometimes you need an actual break)
You will just be exhausted, just think of the sweet, sweet sleep you will have when you get home and think of the sweet, sweet once-in-a-lifetime shows you might miss if you "sit this one out". That is motivation enough for me.
I feel like this comes off as a dangerous message, and that I willy nilly just frolick through bonnaroo with infinite amounts of energy, ignoring any warning signs my body might be trying to give me. I'm saying I know my limits well and have never, in six years, felt like roo had gotten the best of me. Push your limits but do not ignore them, ever, especially at roo
Get out and be more active now, it will make a difference!

My fiance and I are extremely overweight and the first two years we went were pretty miserable. The past two years haven't been quite as bad and we've camped all the way in the back the past two years as well. Each year we become more and more prepared. We do late night pretty much every night except for Sunday. We usually end up in the car in the ac for a while to get a few hours of sleep. But we've also kinda ditched the tent and just have an air mattress under our canopy with some shade on the side where the sun is coming up.

Bonnaroo is an endurance race... treat it as such. What I mean is that the same things I have to do to get ready for any sort of outdoor endurance event apply to getting through a weekend of Roo in good health and good spirits.
1. Prepare. Get off the couch... the sooner the better. If you don't regularly get some exercise, get out and get some. I'm not suggesting you have to start running miles or hitting the gym at 5am... just get out and walk after dinner. Go for a hike on weekends. Play with the dog out back for awhile. Just get used to moving around and being on your feet more often than you currently are.
2. Once at 'Roo, pace yourself. It's hard not to, but don't totally rage out on Thursday and wreck the rest of your weekend. All things in moderation is cool. Too much of any one thing will sink you. It's a long weekend, plenty of time to experience all sorts of buzzes and vibes... don't try to do them all at once.
3. Take care of yourself: Take a few minutes every hour or so to access your own needs. Do you need to sleep? Do you need some nutrition? Do you need to get out of the sun? Do you need more water? Now give yourself what you need: grab a catnap in a shady spot in Centeroo, eat a Clif bar and an apple (save the Spicy Pie for fun, not nutrition/energy), hit the fountain or mist tent, etc.
4. (BTW, yes you need more water) Stay hydrated: I think this deserves it's own note. Staying hydrated will directly effect everything from your energy level to your mood. It will help sunburns feel better. It will dramatically effect your energy level. It will keep headaches at bay. It will help keep you 'regular' which will improve your general well being and mood. You body can absorb up to 1L (about a quart) an hour; any more than that is a waste and could become dangerous at some point. I think that if you're drinking less than a gallon of water and/or electrolyte solution a day then you are seriously doing yourself a disservice.
The absolute BEST thing I have found for fast, cheap, effective, healthy hydration is called Vitalyte. It's a powder that comes in a large tub with a scoop or in packets that can be dumped into a 1L Nalgene or similar and mixed with water. This stuff is truly a life saver. Unlike most 'hydration drinks' it isn't full of needless sugars and is absorbed directly through your stomach lining for incredibly FAST results.
Just be good to yourself and listen to your body. Taking a few minutes during the day to take care of yourself can be the difference between being miserable or happy... or making it to that late night show you really don't want to miss.
Sleep and hydration: this is what your body needs.
You come back from LN set as the sun is rising? Sleep outside the tent (cot? chair?) in as much shade as you can find. Use a portable fan. Then drink LOTS AND LOTS of water (at least water; Gatorade or something with electrolytes is best) when you wake. You will have sweated out much of it while you were sleeping, esp. if you danced your ass off in a tent.
Minimize alcohol during the day. It's going to deplete your body of fluid. The more you're hydrated, the better your endurance.
Oh, and COMFY SHOES! This goes doubly for us girls! It doesn't matter if your outfit looks cuter w/flip-flops: you WILL miss shows if you're miserable! Be kind to your feet; wear the most comfortable shoes you own. Bring multiple pairs. Switch 'em up if you have to. Do you see marathon runners wearing flip-flops or Crocs? Hell no! Dress accordingly & your dogs won't be barking so much once the sun goes down.

Good ole fashioned stubbornness! Also, you're from Denton. Get out and get used to the heat/sun, practice being an old school Texan (I'm originally from Agtown and I lived in Denton for 5 years) as soon as the weather warms up, and by the time you get up here, you'll be golden.

You guys are making me feel like a freak. I never knew so many people had trouble making it throughout the day, and I'm not bragging or anything. Honestly, I just do it. I don't take any naps, energy drinks, caffeine or anything like that either. I see the afternoon shows and make it all the way though late night with no problem. I think it helps that I don't drink alcohol during the day, I'm not a dancer during the shows, I'm one of those people that sits down on the ground before a show starts even if I only have room to squat, and I am a night owl by nature. Also, being a Tennessee native who is accustomed to the humidity might help also. I don't really have a secret. I just do it, and I've never really thought twice about it until I read this thread.

Naps. When you are inbetween shows or find a nice shady spot set your butt down and sleep for a bit. I carried a towel around in a mesh backpack and would just throw it down under a tree and take a 10 -20 minute nap. Lots of water through the day and eat lots of small meals through the day. Carry little packs of almonds or beef jerky. Coconut water is also great to have with you for a pick me up. Don't drink, the times I felt most run down was after I drank so I'd save that for times at your campsite.

I'm in my mid 40s, and definitely not very fit and have never used the energy drinks.... I do bring a can of mountain dew for each evening, but other than that no caffeine. I don't get much sleep at Bonnaroo at night (maybe 4-5 hours) so by Sunday I am usually pretty exhausted and very grumpy. Earplugs are a must for sleepy time - never used them before I went to Bonnaroo but I can't be without them if I want to sleep there.
I am usually up by 7am (which sucks!) and nap in the mid to late afternoon in any shade I can find. I drink TONS of water, eat when I am hungry (and usually don't eat much), I drink wine throughout the day and evening, but not in huge amounts. I don't do any drugks. I wear really comfy shoes and loose, cool sundresses. I usually stay in the back for most shows, because I find it stressful and exhausting to be up front. I usually make it to the late night shows when my friends who are in their 20s & 30s are already crashed... not sure why that is.......
I consider myself way out of shape and loved how exhausted roo made me. we were in centeroo at about 10am every day and back at camp between 1-sunrise. we probably took 2 naps a day sprawled out on the ground in centeroo and took it real easy between shows. kept ourselves well-fed and watered and embraced the exhaustion. i can't stress how much water helps! between two of us we'd fill up a gallon solely for the walk into centeroo from BFE and whatever we hadn't drank, we'd dump all over our heads before the gates. keep cool and keep hydrated!
Lots of good things said. I'll add what my friends make fun of me for saying: minimize motion.
Which means walk as little as possible. Don't bust your ass to get up front and dancerage your face off for every set. If you take it easy and enjoy shows from further out you wont get as exhausted. If your friends want to go walk around the campgrounds tell them you are just going to chill.
No amount of energy enhances will overcome true physical exhaustion. But for mental exhaustion 5 hour energy plus coffee is my favorite.
One more tip, a good set of earplugs to wear during loud sets will also give you a surprising energy boost. High decibel levels always make me more tired. Plug in the earplugs and it's almost instant relief. I don't know why this is.

Take naps and don't drink a ton of alcohol.
I typically also try to go by this plan also. Thursday, stay out only until 2am and don't get loaded. Friday don't drink until about 4pm, take a nap once the sun starts going down. I slept all through Arcade Fire last year (I don't really care for them) so I could rage all Friday night. Saturday, eat a hearty breakfast (or lunch) and try to get a nap at some point during the day. Saturday LN rage all you want. Sunday find a spot at the What Stage and nap on and off all day unless there is some one you can't miss at a tent that day.
Most importantly HYDRATE and eat. Plus I would recommend working out a couple weeks ahead of Bonnaroo so you're body is used to standing/walking for extended periods of time. Plus you'll hopefully have a banging body to show off how the hot girls and boys at Bonnaroo.

I'm 40, and this is my tried and true formula for making it through Bonnaroo: - I usually start taking long walks - I shudder to think of the miles I put on my feet during the weekend - in the month or two prior to 'roo, and I take them using the shoes I plan on wearing at 'roo. That alleviates any potential blister woes. - As others, including frank have pointed out, I take it easy on the alcohol, especially during the day. I warned my friends about that last year - as did another 'roo vet we know - and they still drank it up underneath the hot sun. Consequently, they missed most of the late-night shows. - I try to eat somewhat healthy - I can't resist some of that spicy pie - and take multi vitamins. 'roo is like a long-distance race, and distance runners eat properly for endurance purposes. I eat three-plus small meals a day, including some homemade pasta salad we make up and store on ice in the cooler for the weekend. - I also kind of ween myself off caffeinated beverage prior to 'roo, so if I do need a coffee or tea during the weekend, it will have more of a pick-me-up effect. - One last thing. If I do get tired/worn out, I grab a battery powered fan, try to find some shade and take a quick nap. I missed Buffalo Springfield last year because I had to catch an hour or so of sleep, but I was able to stay up until 5 a.m. because of it.
