That reminds me of rivers around here, which are mostly based on their Cherokee(Likely Creek influence too) names or badly translated versions of them. Hiwassee, Coosawattee, Oostanaula, Conasauga, Etowah, Amicalola, Chattooga...
They are pretty much pronounced how they are spelt but there are a lot of variations among southerners, as you can imagine. Hi-wah-se or HI-a-Waaaaah-See. I really like Amicalola because, for some reason, a lot of people add a N sound after the I. It's a mess.
Some genealogical testing just came back for my great aunt (maternal grandmother's side).
As it turns out, she has mostly Scandinavian ancestry. Unfortunately we don't know which country it comes from quite yet.
Is this for medical reasons?
Nope! Our genealogy has always been of some interest to the family so we decided to get it checked out. We knew I had Polish ancestry, but not much else. This is a huge help.
That's not the ancestry she has though. It gets particularly interesting the further you go down the list.
We still need to do my grandparents though, b/c apparently even siblings can get differing results.
As far as place names that trip people up... we've got a few (and I don't mean the perfectly normal ones that Monie had a chuckle at, like Erskineville & Glebe).
There's a reason I've Been Everywhere was originally written about Australia. Anyone who can get through these lyrics flawlessly gets a beer on me:
Well, I was humpin' my bluey on the dusty Oodnadatta road, When along came a semi with a high and canvas-covered load. (Spoken) "If you're goin' to Oodnadatta, mate, um, with me you can ride." So I climbed in the cabin and I settled down inside. He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand, I said "Listen, mate, I've travelled ev'ry road in this here land."
Cos "I've been everywhere, man, I've been everywhere, man. 'Cross the deserts bare, man; I've breathed the mountain air, man. Of travel I've had my share, man. I've been ev'rywhere.
Been to Tullamore, Seymour, Lismore, Mooloolaba, Nambour, Maroochydore, Kilmore, Murwillumbah, Birdsville, Emmaville, Wallaville, Cunnamulla, Condamine, Strathpine, Proserpine, Ulladulla, Darwin, Gin Gin, Deniliquin, Muckadilla, Wallumbilla, Boggabilla, Kumbarilla, I'm a killer.
(Spoken) "Yeah but listen here, mate, have you been to..."
I've been to Moree, Taree, Jerilderie, Bambaroo, Toowoomba, Gunnedah, Caringbah, Woolloomooloo, Dalveen, Tamborine, Engadine, Jindabyne, Lithgow, Casino, Brigalow and Narromine, Megalong, Wyong, Tuggerawong, Wangarella, Morella, Augathella, Brindabella, I'm the feller.
(Spoken) "Yeah, I know that, but have you been to..."
There's a street by me called Tuohy Ave. I went through a great number of incredibly incorrect pronunciations before someone finally told me it was just pronounced "tooie".

If you ever come to Knoxville, Maryville is pronounced Mur-vul or Mare-uh-vul. If you say Mare-ee-vill, you will be marked as a Yankee and ostracized accordingly.
kinda like how "louisville" is pronounced "luuououwuwullwoooull-ville" and us yankees would say "loo-ie-ville"
Yes!!! It's think a competition to see how lazy you can say it!!! "Luuullllll-vulll"

Is a sign of depression eating a huge bowl of Velveeta Shells & Cheese in bed while watching Netflix? I'm starting to think yes.
If this is wrong, then I don't want to be right. I wish I was close enough to climb in with you!!! I'd even bring my own shells and cheese....and wine.
