Hey guys, I thought I would create an account here since I've been receiving a lot of messages from many of you. As I stated last year, feel free to use me as a resource. Some major things should be unfolding very shortly.

I think Arcade Fire is the most logical guess. Not just because it's Arcade Fire, it just makes the most sense. A dog named Laika that died in space, I just think that's too much of a coincidence.
Assuming, of course, that "speckled lad" refers to a dog.

The problem I have with this logic is that the dog was female, which would have made her a "lass" instead of a "lad". Small thing, I know, but it seems like they would choose the Roo Clue wording carefully.
I have never taken part in this clue thing before but as previously stated, most clues werent this long. this had 2 sentences = 2 thoughts. The name of this band is 2 different ideas. One being Brian Jones and the other being the Jonestown Massacre. Brian Jones death prevented him from a rise to superstardom with the rolling stones. The Jonestown Massacre was literally a watershed moment...

Hmmmm... this is a thought. I'm still sticking with AF or Gorillaz, though, although the earlier point of Laika being a female thus being a lass not a lad does make me skeptical...

I agree--not feeling this logic. I initially thought it was Arcade Fire, too because the first part of the clue sounds like an arcade game and "watershed otherwise" might work as the opposite of fire. But that was too much of a reach even for me. Also I was just trying to fit one of my favorite bands into the clue

I like your logic, but I'm not sure it fits with the speckled lad thingy. I looked at a picture of him and no freckles or speckles, but maybe just a bad picture? Also, his father used to be an aeronautical engineer...

Someone mentioned Brian Jones earlier (15 pages ago?) and I had a fleeting thought of the same.
I was talking about how she tied the clue to Dark Side of the Moon. I'm pretty sure that the Foo Fighters don't have an album titled Dark Side of the Moon. Do they, jhammett? Do they have an album titled Dark Side of the Moon? No, they don't. I was talking about how her explanation could work for Gilmore because Waters is going to be over seas and it takes so long for his stage to be sat up. Watch yourself, delby's got teeth.
And the whole evolution used to get to dark side of the moon is illogical. Lets review...
Clue #1: A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise. A trip to space, or a trip to the moon. A speckled lad, or the man on the moon with craters and all. The speckled lad's demise, or when the moon gets dark.
The trip was thwarted, therefore it never happened. I have no idea what makes anyone think that a speckled lad = a man on the moon. This person's demise being the moon getting dark is also incredibly weak.
It doesn't make much sense any more delby, does it? Well does it? I couldn't hear you delby, does it still make sense? Im waiting for your answer delby...
I would love to see some form of Pink Floyd on the farm, believe me. However, at this point, nothing; this clue included, hints that either of those acts are even probable for 2011. So forgive me for dismissing the Roger Waters and David Gilmore rumors / ideas as wishful thinking, but I would rather everyone not be butthurt when the lineup is released (Like last year)
I don't think David Gilmore will be there. I don't think the clue refers to any member of Pink Floyd at all. I was just saying that the explanation given makes more sense then most of the others. You were the one who got all pissy about it first. Now let me explain.
A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise.
1) A trip to space To travel outside the atmosphere of Earth. 2) Thwarted Thwarted does mean "to oppose successfully," but it can also mean "to cross." 3) by a speckled Speckled means covered in spots. 4) lad A member of the male gender. Boy, guy, dude, Man. 5) demise To die/ cease to exist 6) A watershed moment otherwise. A turning point after which nothing is the same.
Now let's examine how this relates to Dark Side of the Moon/Pink Floyd.
The first two points could be referring to traveling to where a speckled lad met his demise. We traveled into space and crossed by a speckled lad's demise. Next we move on the to the speckled lad. A man covered in spots. The man in the moon is an illusion created by shadows in craters. The craters are the spots on the man in moon. Then we move on to demise. How does the man in the moon die? He ceases to exist when the moon goes dark. That's where we arrive at the Dark Side of the Moon. Now the last part could be referring to how Pink Floyd reached mainstream success with the album and were never the same band afterwards.
I know it's reaching and I don't even believe that any member of Pink Floyd is going to be there, but that is a logical interpretation of the clue. I just found someone else's argument for it being a Pink Floyd member sound, and you attacked me, jhammett. I meant no ill will to you at all, but I was frustrated, and I just couldn't take it anymore. Now let this be over.
it would help if people didn't try to fit the clues to the bands that they want to be there.
To be fair, that's a pretty difficult thing to do. I mean, some of the guesses are far-fetched (like the Floyd ones) but I could see Gorillaz, AF, or Brian Jonestown Massacre all being right given the clue.

How is it a reach? "A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise."
The Russians sent a dog (Laika, the name of an AF song) into orbit, which was obviously a watershed moment. The dog died however, putting a damper on the trip. I think this is the most logical solution I've seen in this insane thread. The only holdup is with the phrase "speckled lad," since a) we don't know if this phrase refers to a dog, b) the dog, Laika, was a female so she was technically a lass, and c) Laika was not really speckled.
So, yeah, there are some hold-ups, but I think they're too minor to debunk this guess, which is, in my opinion, the one in this thread that makes the most sense.

what is the logic for Gorillaz? really hard keeping up with this thread...
Not buying the BJM guess at all. Seems like a pretty huge stretch.

Also the dog's death was intentional because at the time the technology to re-enter the atmosphere was not completed thus not thwarting the trip.

like this and anything referring to kennedy/dead kennedys and apollo 13/apollo sunshine

That's still nitpicking to me. A dog dying could still "thwart" the trip, whether intentional or not. One could put an asterisk, so to speak, on the Russians' accomplishment since Laika did not return alive.
