Guys, nobody should be pissy right now. Compared to the top of last year's line-up, and really any time, we've already got a great fest coming up. Come on guys!
Every headliner mentioned is a band I like and want to see. That was not the case last year. Only problem is it will cut into my pre late night nap time.
by process of elimination, I really do think we're looking at the return of Kanye West to Bonnaroo.
Outkast is as long a shot as a White Stripes, Talking Heads, or any other not going to happen reunion would've been. While I'd love to see them, I can't help but think that they'd make their first return in Atlanta, or on television, or for a charity etc. just not at Bonnaroo.
Eminem I don't think is coming either, for a reason much different than Outkast not coming. His content is a little over aggressive for the Bonnaroo vibe. Unlike, say, GWAR where it's all a tongue in cheek shtick, his stuff can be over the top for the worse.
Dr.Dre would be a big pull if it's just billed as Dr.Dre. The "and friends" part is implied, and if Em tags along in that capacity I think he'd be much better received. Even still, Dre hasn't performed consistently since 2000 and, to date at least, has no new music on the horizon. Between now and June Detox would need to get a legitimate marketing push with at least one sure fire single. The window of time is too narrow.
So if we're really getting a marquee act the only name left is Kanye West. He tweeted recently about "taking over the festivals." While he's already booked for Coachella and Lollapalooza Chile, returning to Bonnaroo would indeed mark a "takeover." Bonnaroo would get behind it as a deserved second chance, and Kanye would likely say that he wanted to make it right as well. With the Saturday night spot he'd have his ego stroked for getting the premier time slot, and we'd benefit from his being motivated to return with a stellar show that he'd surely deliver.
And I'd love it.
Face it, if we're talking about Bonnaroo as the great American music festival, there's no two relevant acts who better defined "the cutting edge" in contemporary music this past year than the Black Keys and Kanye West.
Keep in mind though that this really hinges on it being a marquee rap act. But if it's really true, there's few big enough to do it outside of Jay-Z and there's only one that appears to stand a legitimate shot.
If the "trip-hop" rule of one applies, what if Massive Attack isnt on the bill. Portishead would make as much sense as anyone else.
Yes. I agree. But if they are, Portishead doesnt make as much sense.
Listen, I would quacking LOVE to have both. But unfortunately these companies generally DO work with formulas...
Come to think of it tho, this years proposed lineup doesnt really fit the usual formula, does it?
its different then normal for sure(no rock legend headlining) but if we get Outkast to round it out, then honestly i dont care, because this will be an amazing top of the bill.
that being said, we dont know the undercard yet, and weve heard that it is supposed to be what carries the fest this year. if we take what weve been told today(plus over the past couple days with Massive Attack and Black Star) and add a loaded undercard, well then we are gonna have ourselves a great fest.

It should be noted that Portishead and Massive Attack don't really sound alike at all...
I would imagine Massive Attack and Portishead would both be Which latenights though. And we already know we got MMJ as a What latenight for Friday. So unless they are changing their format(one stage latenight act on fri and sat) then we will only be getting one of Portishead and Massive Attack.

Neither do Metallica, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath but that doesn't mean they're not all the top names of a particular genre, and would all have a similar draw (kinda... I think Massive attack and portishead have even more of an overlapping similar draw than the names I mentioned.)

I'm not really advocating the idea that both are playing. I'm just pointing out the notion that they wouldn't book both acts if available just because they're labeled trip-hop ignores the fact the bands sound nothing alike and approach music completely differently.
Just out of curiosity are the Black Keys filling the Dead Weather spot or Stevie Wonder spot on Sat... If its the first... then do we still have room for two more "name" bands.

First I apologize if I'm overposting here, just alot to say tonight Ok so I agree Portishead and Massive attack would both be latenights so it's unlikely. But did she ever say I would be AF=headline MMJ latenight? It makes sense but it could just as easily be MMJ preheadline>AF headline (or vice versa)

what we all want to know. if they are the stevie wonder-spot act, then man, is that weak. if they are the dead weather spot, then man, is that an UUUUUPGRADE....we'll have to wait and see i suppose.

They aren't. She didn't even imply they were. She just said they were booked as the band playing on the What Stage before the headliner on Saturday, which means they're probably billed 8-15.

Others seem to be asking this as well. So lets get it out there.
She has specifically said that she considers the top two acts each day HEADLINERS. She then specifically called the Black Keys SUBheadliners.
So Black Keys are going to be in the Dead Weather slot, IMO. And we will still have two major What stage acts after them.

you could be right with that. in which case we still have that SCI rumor. so honestly im not sure whats goin on right now, i feel we already have too many stage LN acts(Massive Attack, MMJ, SCI) unless they are doin LNs on What and Which each night.
we could see somethin like this:
Friday What - Arcade Fire 9:00 - 11:00 > MMJ 1:00 - 4:00 Which - Portishead 11:30 - 1:30
I feel like we are really narrowing this down as far as the Saturday spots go. You guys are counting a lot of possibilities out. Soundgarden? Santana? Allman Bros? Clapton? STP? I don't know, I feel like we are really missing a big name. Even Lady Gaga is a strong possibility; That chick is so ROO material.
I dunno, I'm new to the thread so I'm probably talking out of my ass.

so you're thinking they aren't stevie slot, they're the dead weather slot (using last year as a basis).

Seriously, I feel like unless it was Neil Young/Radiohead/Phish/Daft Punk, everyone here would have been disappointed.
I wouldn't! lol. I don't want to see any of them, save maybe Neil.
Damn, I am really against the norm on this board.....or maybe the only one to be vocal against the regular posters. LOL, I had 5-6 "pts" two days ago, and have lost them all because of posts simply going against the norm. lol.
As much as I love this board for the info, its seriousness cracks me up so much.

I'm thinking the two top slots of Friday and Saturday are generally considered the Headlining slot and the Late Night Which Stage slot. There are of course years with exceptions to that, but pre-headliner on the Saturday stage has rarely been a top 6 act in recent years.
