Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
About Phish's concert draws: I know I said they were the top for 15 years, I saw somewhere that when the tickets were $30(mid-late 90s) they were the #7 grossing band in the world. Their first tour back last year sold out immediately, I know some were definitely scalped but what major concerts aren't these days. And the fact that thousands of fans don't come from around the world to their fests does not make my statement false.
About Phish being partly responsible for 'Roo: Yes Glastonbury had been proven popular overseas, but the American festival had been suffering for years. Phish, borrowing some from Glasto, proved that the festival could work again in America and Bonnaroo capitalized on it, followed by many others.
And When I was talking about Bonnaroo not being about commercial success, I meant it isn't a popularity contest and I won't go see someone because of the success they've had commercially. I go see someone because of the music and how it makes me dance like an ass! And although I am a Phan, I am by no means close-minded when it comes to other music. I have many other favorite bands from different genres. Phish at the moment just happens to be my favorite!
People can argue headliners all day, but look at a good number of the bands on the list & they are headliners in there own right. Jay-Z is not my bag, but I will check him out. I'm more of a old rocker, but Roo is the best place to broaden your horizon. Good times for all. Love & Peace
In that case Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and Madonna are all bigger than Jay Z as well.
Absolutely.
For the record, people in here are getting confused between "bigger" and "better," and they're not the same thing.
Also for the record, every time Phish fans express their opinion about music that isn't Phish I'm reminded of the things I used to hate about Phish tour. Most closeminded fans ever, IMO.
Still, Phish headlines two nights and there is a huge crowd. Special LN Jay Z and no one is going this year. I can at least say empirically that Phish brings more people to music festivals than him. Though I am sure other factors are at work as well.

I went in '08 so I have nothing to base attendance on other than that year obviously. But if numbers are down from '08 that means there's gonna be alot of tickets left over and alot more space avail. for everyone. What's funny is that I haven't been able to find ANY sources on attendance for ANY year.

They play that pretty close to their chests. Here are my best guesses from this board and other places
2006, 85000
2007, 80000
2008 65,000-70,000
2009 80,000
2010 ??? I bet it is less than 60k still hard to say though.

I don't want this to sound negative, and like NoD stated as well I wish the best for the future health of this fest. But I wouldn't mind a crowd of 65k this year. Really there would be just so much breathing room for everyone at the shows. As long as it doesn't seem like a ghost town, I would be very ok with that number.

I didn't go to either of the Phish shows last year, and I have no interest in Jay Z. Just fwiw. To me they're two extremes on a continuum of music I have no interest in. As a general consumer of music, I think the general messyness of the lineup and schedule has more to do with ticket sales than one specific headliner.
I wonder if the lower ticket sales are going to bode better or worse for those looking for cheaper hand-me-down tickets...
Aye. I could buy a hand me down right now but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle just to save $30-$50. Guess I'll hold out and see if any better deals pop up. meh.

I could give a shi.t if AC doesn't hit their expected revenues this year, welcome to the club. The artists are booked, I'm going, and they'll be back next year. A thin crowd (in a relative sense) is fine by me.

They will make it up with sales to the Phish fest on the new mainstage in late September.
Weren't tickets in 2002 about $100 less than they are now? Wonder if they'd make more by lowering the cost. Not that I think $250-300 is too much to ask, but I have 7 friends, at least, who aren't going because of the cost.
