Anyone think they will do a split-headliner again on Friday? I'm a HUGE Phish fan, so it worked for me, but I think that format allows them to add essentially two more headliners. Your thoughts?
I've thought about this some. This past Bonnaroo had special circumstances(Phish) that caused the double headliner Friday. It all worked out well. I think most would agree. I'm not sure if they will do it again or not.
I guess it all depends on how many big name acts they want to bring in. And if they can find a way to make quick enough stage changes on What and Which(it get's more complicated when lighting changesare needed). It worked OK for Beasties>Phish this year. If I recall correctly they had some trouble with the changes on What in 2008.
Check out this site they just posted U2 and pavement as rumors for roo
The U2 rumor doesn't die. I've been one to dismiss it as very unlikely, deeming them to be too big for Bonnaroo. Too big of a stage set-up and too big of a draw on their own.
The new info about them headlining Glastonbury without their big set up certainly makes them seem a little more likely for Bonnaroo. The second reason that has been given is that album sales are lagging and they aren't picking up too many new fans. Nothing like playing the biggest festivals in Europe and The U.S. to help win a few new fans. Bruce broke from his longstanding no festival stance last year and it appears Bono and the boys took note.
I don't have any true idea if we will see them in June, but it at least seems possible.
And yes, if they play they will make many new fans.
Yes yes yes, we all know about consequence of sound.
Also, an update on the primavera sound thing, this was posted on atease, which was posted on the coachella message board, which will now be posted here. It's like a giant circle of rumors, anxiety, hope, fear, and music nerd prognosticating.

Anaheim--->Denver--->Oakland--->Seattle 3,076 mi – about 1 day 23 hours
Denver--->Anaheim--->Oakland--->Seattle 2,209 mi – about 1 day 10 hours
867 additional miles for no good reason is probably a lot of extra gas for 120 Trucks, huh?
I have no idea about the logistics but I know that they have two teams. While they are playing one night, the other team is setting up at the next venue. The band just flies from show to show. I'd like to see them on the farm. I can't imagine how much it costs them to put on that show. They wouldn't bring the claw anyways.
my gf (very knowledgeable on all things u2) tells me they have three of those stages. they are being donated to places that need a stage for music performances after the tour is over...
unless the claw is the main stage at bonnaroo, they aren't bringing it. its a massive, massive free standing structure.
it would make for a pretty awesome main stage - if they could hook up the old bonnaroo green sign.
I've thought a lot about them bringing the "claws" to Bonnaroo. If they played Friday night, perhaps the claws could be set up behind the existing soundboard. This would give everyone a very good view of the show. They would have to remove the claws after the festival was over as it take a long time with cranes and the like. The stage area underneath could be removed overnight.
I know that's a lot of problems to deal with, but maybe they would do it. Most likely, if they are there, U2 would just play the What Stage.
The more I think about it the more I think U2 makes sense. Even though they already have played a number of dates in the US they will still be a huge draw. On the other hand it would make sense for U2 to want to play roo. They have yet to make a profit on this tour and playing a festival where they wouldn't have to pay for 200 semi trucks or a huge crew would make sense financially.
It would make more sense to me if Roo was a week after glasto and not the other way around. They have been billing it as U2's first festival appearance since the eighties or something like that.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself

"Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis said he had been trying for years to persuade the group to perform and was delighted they had agreed to play their first festival since the 1980s."
I really hope U2 doesn't play. The way people were trash-talking AC/DC this time last year when it seemed like they might headline... that's how I feel about U2. I do like some of their stuff, but for me, it's the kind of music that gets boring after 10 minutes or so because every song sounds the same to me. If they played, I would do the same thing that I did at Bruce Springsteen - stay for 45 minutes or so, then go back to camp, so I can rest and gear up for late night.

Cmon guys U2 would be a great show. Imagine "One" or "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on the farm with 50,000 singing along. I think U2 feels like they have a lot to prove to a mostly younger audience at Bonnaroo and the subsequent ripples that it would cause throughout the U.S. that they would go that extra mile with the setlist and make it mostly older stuff. Plus it's been long enough since No Line on the Horizon where the tour could be somewhat of victory lap instead of supporting the album
Not debating whether or not they will be there (the Rolling Stone story reminds me of when Bruce's schedule came out last year and there was a big break where Coachella could've been played, some speculated he could play in the desert) just saying it would be a great time.
Or how about them closing with "40" and having everyone disperse through the grounds chanting "How Long… How Long… How Long…How Long to Sing this Song"?
My expectations of U2 playing 'Roo seems to change on daily basis…
What I know now is…
Factors that make it likely…
They aren't tied to the claw for shows (MSG, Berlin, Glasto)… As much as the Claw would be an epic permanent addition to the Farm, it probably won't happen in 2010.
They have recently collaborated at shows (MSG, and Berlin) with other acts rumoured for 'Roo (Jay Z and Mick Jagger)
They are already on the continent before and after the festival dates (unlike Bruce last year)
Factors that I can't figure out…
They would be playing Friday night. Saturday is typically for top billing… but my understanding is they are playing Friday at Glasto so maybe this is less of a thing (but would mean a massive band for Saturday)?
They would be playing before Glasto… does Glasto care about this? Did Bruce get announced there first last year? If so this probably doesn't matter. (Glasto has already sold out, so they have nothing to lose)
U2 apparently have another album slated for release in 2010…
If the Festival follows last years structure… (not that it will)… I would love to see U2 late night Friday on What, after Jay Z plays What and whoever curates this year plays Which
Revised want list based on nothing more than my gut feeling (this hour anyway)
Thursday: the Airborne Toxic Event (This Tent), Them Crooked Vultures (That Tent)
Friday: Arcade Fire (pre What), Jay Z (What), Peter Gabriel and Friends* perform The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Which), U2 (LN What)
Saturday: Jack White in some form (pre What), Rolling Stones (What), The French Invasion! on the Which Stage (one or more of Phoenix, Daft Punk, Air)
Sunday: String Cheese Incident (closeout on What)
*One of the interesting things about David Byrne touring the music of Byrne and Eno, was that it was great way to showcase early Talking Heads material, without having to open the can of worms that apparently constitutes a Talking Heads reunion. Following the model of an artist who has a history of promoting or influencing other acts, there are a number of people I can think of to curate a Tent all day and then pull something awesome out of the back catalogue.
Not that any of this is important, I've got my tickets already. I'm sure amongst the 150 acts I'll find more than enough to keep me happy.
The Who (Saturday Headliner) U2 (Phish Spot Friday Headliner) Jay Z (Beasties Friday Spot) Furthur (Sunday Headliner) Pavement (David Byrne Spot Friday)
The Roots, Them Crooked Vultures, and Allman Brothers as pre's.
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
If Paul McCartney is going on his "farewell" tour next year (he'll at least be going away for a while), I think he's for sure the Saturday headliner. Why would Bonnaroo not want to get this guy while they can? The fact that it's Paul McCartney + the fact that it's his farewell tour = big ticket sales
Plus, Paul McCartney is for certain going on tour. The Who have made no mention of a tour. They could, of course, but McCartney just seems much more likely to me

Sat-Flaming Lips- The Who (unopposed) -Them Crooked Vultures- - Arcade Fire

I'll take that lineup, although I just got to hear TCV once for the first time, and I'm a little disappointed. But I think this is a band I'd have to see live to get into, although that didn't work for a certain band last year at Roo.
