One of the most enduring things about L.A. Confidential was the tabloid point of view of it. Very few movies have done that so well.
That, and the fact that my arch-nemesis - James Cromwell - dies in it, which makes the movie okay for me to watch.
Well then you may want to tune into American Horror Story when it comes back on in a couple of weeks. Fairly certain he could be dead in an episode or two.

2012 was an awesome year for movies considering we got another Dark Knight, new Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, and Tarintino films, and at last, the Hobbit.
2013 is looking awesome as well, if not better! Most excited for these.
Star Trek Into Darkness Man of Steel Trance (new Danny Boyle film) Anchorman 2 Pacific Rim (Guillemo Del Toro film in which giant robots battle giant monsters Inside Llewyn Davis (new Coen Brothers - centered around NYC's 1960's folk scene) Spring Breakers (directed by Harmony Korine w/ Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and James Franco?) Oz: The Great and Powerful Monsters Inc: Monsters University! End of the World (inspired by short film on Pineapple Express - Seth Rogen and friends battle the end)
"In the darkness hundreds of glowsticks streaked the air like tracer shots in war. Giant inflatables bounced over dozens of light sabers pointed skyward. Stuffed animals impaled on sticks danced above the hot crowds, puppeted by someone just given ecstasy by a friend made seconds before."

That Pacific Rim trailer looks horrible!
I saw Spring Breakers at TIFF in September, not bad but not great either. Franco steals the show
Definitely excited for Monsters University and Anchorman 2. There will also be at least one new Nicholas Winding Refn effort in 2013!

Haven't seen the Pacific Rim trailer yet. I had only read about and it seemed like a cool concept. Plus I really loved Pan's Labyrinth.
Figured James Franco would be awesome in Spring Breakers. Was it dark and dysfunctional like most if his films? Was it more improv or did it seem more scripted?

Working with Ryan Gosling again eh? Looks cool.
"According to a production synopsis, the film follows Julian, who runs a Thai boxing club as a front organization for his family's NO NO WORD!!! smuggling operation, as he is forced by his mother Jenna to find and kill the individual responsible for his brother's recent death."

Gundam Style Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots with GlaDOS commentary. I want to believe that Guillemo Del Toro's reasoning for making this film is just to fak with Michael Bay's head.

Spring Breakers was definitely in line with Korine's other films. Dark, morbidly funny, stomach turning, all in an effort to poke fun at the Spring Break crowd. My issue with it was that it got annoyingly repetitive both stylistically, and in terms of dialogue overlays (there were too many weird moments where character dialogue kept drifting in and out over top of regular dialogue). Also, though it was a good idea to cast former Disney girls against type it just didn't work out.
Still, if you are a Harmony Korine fan its worth seeing and also James Franco is stellar.
I somehow missed this earlier. Anyone who saw Wreck-It Ralph knows that there is at least two points in the movie which are no-shame cry moments, but no, I didn't cry.

Yeah looks disappointing, sigh. You're better than this Del Toro.

That movie looks awesome. I read an interview where he was talking about the different creatures and stuff liek that and it got me into it.
In a time where everything is an adaptation or sequel I'm glad to see a kickass original idea like this being made by Del Toro for a big blockbuster movie. It's not going to be thought-provoking....but it's going to be fun as hell. Really looking forward to it at some point (probably not in theaters....takes a lot to get me to see a movie in theaters now.

Well I agree with you there but Pan's Labyrinth was so promising. Of course its been nearly 7 years since that one. I'm holding out all hope for his version of Pinocchio!

The Impossible.
I'm feeling very mixed on this one. This tragic drama, focusing on one family's survival during the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand, has some real bright spots but those are equally met with some elements that brought the film down to a mediocre level. Starting with the positives, I'd have to say that Naomi Watts gives one of the better female performances of the year, a really grueling and emotional piece of work from her throughout. Also, you would have a hard time finding a more realistic scene of carnage in any other film this year than the opening 20 minutes of this film. The horrors that surface after the water begins to recede also are very unsettling and a pull for the viewer.
Where the film fails is in focusing on a single family as opposed to stretching things out a bit more and perhaps following the lives of a few families. The whole things just comes off a little indulgent as everyone seems to treat this family as if they are special when there are thousands of others in similar or worse shape at the time. The dramatic elements, with regards to the family unit, are very hokey which also brought things down for me.

Silver Linings Playbook.
Another highly touted film this holiday season that is actually only a C+ or B- effort (Lincoln, The Impossible, also in this category). There are some very bright spots here, namely the acting of Bradley Cooper and somewhat surprisingly at this juncture of his career Bobby DeNiro, but ultimately the sum total of it's parts make for SLP to be a decent but by no means stellar film. The film was very formulaic and the pacing felt a bit rushed, Jennifer Lawrence was totally out of her element (I didn't buy her or her character) especially against most of the other actors/characters and there was an uneven tone throughout (I get that director Russell was trying to lighten up the darkness of mental illness but it just felt odd).
I would pass on this in favor of something else out there right now.

I saw This is 40 yesterday (because Django Unchained was sold out) and Django Unchained today. This is 40 was pretty much exactly what I expected. Nothing terribly exciting but it had a few good laughs in it. Django Unchained was great! I haven't really wanted to see a Tarantino movie in a long time, but I'm glad I went to this one.
Saw This is 40 on Christmas Day. It had some really good laughs in it, and touched on some real life stuff too. I could definitely relate to big pieces of that movie. However, Paul Rudd just doesn't do it for me. He never really seems "believable" in pretty much ANY movie I see him in. I can just never relate. He always seems to be ACTING, and never sincere in the role. He got close in this one, but just never got there. The flow was decent, breaking up the heavy stuff with some solid laughs. Some good timing. However it is, at the core, exactly what you think it is. Probably wont relate to it much unless you have kids and/or have been married for a while.
