I just got back from the Hobbit. I will break it down as such:
IMAX 3D = awesome. The extended Star Trek trailer has me extra pumped.
48fps = not awesome. For some reason, what it did to the picture reminded me of made for TV movies at times. I'm not even sure what that means myself. I think it made for the whole film to look fake at portions, and I felt it was distracting in the action sequences. I wanted to ask if anyone noticed some portions where movement looked weird? For example, at the very beginning, Bilbo moves faster than he should like you had the 1.5x fast forward on.
The Hobbit - I thought it was good but not great. Since they are making three movies out of a book that is the smallest in the series, Jackson was able to go more into depth with the story. I think fans of the book will be really pleased with the movie overall, but it may have less crossover appeal to people who were just fans of the movies. I nodded off some during the movie, but I think that was because of staying up late watching football and getting up early for work and not the movie.
Thanks Nerd. You already won - quit trying so hard.
Silent House... I thought it started alright with an okay set up, then the middle section of the movie was pretty suspenseful and well done, but I don't think it ended well. With the "twist" you could see from a mile away, I thought that *certain* aspect was unnecessary. From a directorial perspective, you have to commend what was attempted here... even though it was obviously not all one take, there are many long shots in here, and for the most part it adds to the movie more than takes away. I saw it once and wasn't really sure how I felt, it may be worth another look some time.
And since we have someone here who has seen all of Peter Jackson's movies, how about Meet The Feebles? Good god, that has to be my absolute favorite thing he ever did

I like Braindead (Dead Alive) better but yes Meet The Feebles is hilarious.

Lincoln.
I wasn't as blown away (this wouldn't make a personal top 10 of 2012 list) but it is still a quality piece. The acting is top quality across the board with Daniel Day Lewis killing it again (though Jones, Field, and others aren't the years best IMO) and the historical approach to set design, costuming, etc, is also top shelf. I should also note that the script is stellar as well and softens the blow of a very slow, drawn out, 2.5 hour run time. I would have liked a little more focus on Civil War battle sequences (We all know what Spielberg can do with those) as I felt that the film took a soft approach to this angle. That being said, this was more of a Lincoln as politician piece rather than the Civil War that served as a backdrop to his presidency.
All in all this was still a good movie however I wouldn't suggest running out to see it

The plot of Lincoln is the passing of the 13th amendment. Lots of Civil War movies already exist. Seems like they were more interested in highlighting Abe's crowning political achievement and not the old North/South, mug face war film.

I totally get that and knew it going in, the film just ends up feeling longer and drier than a weekend jaunt through the Sahara.
I have two newer movies I'm looking to look at this evening: Looper and Holy Motors.
Anyone seen Holy Motors? I know Looper is supposed to be really good, but Holy Motors looks really interesting, and I haven't heard/seen many people mention it.
Also, started Snowtown Murders, this morning... was a bit much for just that very moment. It looks like a very well done movie and one I will have to finish when I muster up the strength.

I started Sinister last night but dozed off. I've heard it's one of the better horror movies this year. I'm not a big Ethan Hawke fan so we will see.
Bishop I haven't seen any of those, but my room mate watched Loopers recently and said he didn't really care for it. Everything else I've heard about it has been awesome though.
The resolution to the story that got posted last week about the ridiculously detailed Indiana Jones replica package getting sent to the University of Chicago.
Basically, a guy in Guam makes these babies and sells them on ebay. He sold one to a guy in Italy. At a processing center en route, the outer package came off, and they sent it to the name on the inner package. That's right. This guy makes packages like this for a living. Spectacular.

Gangster Squad has all the potential to be awesome. Great subject matter. Great cast. Looks like the costume design is spot on. I think it will be a little more action oriented than LA Confidential, but that is just my guess from the trailers.

Planning on seeing Django, This is 40, Zero Dark Thirty, and Perks of Being a Wallflower over the holiday break. Still need to see Life of Pi and Wreck it Ralph too!

A lot of what I thought would be the case, too. The same noir theme, seeming like it trades a little sytle (in comparison to Confidential) for a little more action
