Coronado Brewing in San Diego has their production facility and a tasting room on Knoxville Street. This is awesome. Said tasting room is also hot as fuck on a normal day. This is not awesome when you're sick.
Edit: The overall count for visits this weekend was: Artifex Acoustic Ballast Point (Rummy 500, they have the best pumpkin beer of all btw) Coronado Left Coast

I too am headed to the Great American Beer fest this week. Anyone have any Midwest or West Coast breweries I absolutely have to try? I've had about 1% of all the breweries there so it's basically open season.

Holy fuck. That's a hell of a list. The lady has been having a field day out west since she went out there. She said her favorite in CA so far is Coronado. For California breweries, I have had Acoustic, Ballast Point, Barley Forge, Beachwood BBQ, Belching Beaver, Benchmark, Bruery, Coronado and Left Coast. Out of those, I would put Coronado, Bruery, Barley Forge and Ballast Point as standouts. bacon and black bush may be able to toss in some more favorites.

Yea I know. It's like asking, "What's your favorite band?" But I've had literally so few West Coast brews that it's basically like starting at square 1.
I've had a few of these you mentioned--Ballast Point and The Bruery I especially love--so this is a great place to start.

Oh yeah. As an addendum, we both really enjoyed everything we got from the Bruery except their smoked beers. We each got one, and we both felt each went way too heavy with the smoke. We didn't even finish them.

Ballast Point is on point with just about everything they put out (except maybe the habanero IPA). They have a new coffee and vanilla porter that was surprisingly tasty. Other CA breweries that do great work are Stone, AleSmith and Green Flash. Midwest breweries that are pretty good are Bell's and Founder's from Michigan and Left Hand, Avery and Oskar Blues in Colorado.

I've had a few of their beers. I want to say a saison and maybe a porter? I'd have to check my untappd.
That's interesting about their smoked beers but I can see how they'd get out of hand. Do you generally like them? If so, Wild Heaven makes an awesome smoked wild ale called Funkenrauch that's worth your time.

THANK YOU. I couldn't remember AleSmith and I'd been trying to think of that name for days now. I've had everything else you mention and love basically all of them.
I definitely want to try any porter (or stout) that Ballast Point makes. I freaking love Heavy Seas. I grabbed an extra one last year and have it aging in my basement.
Left hand, Deschutes, Bridgeport are some other favs
Thanks! I added them to my list!
A friend of a friend actually works at Deschutes. I've never benefited directly from this but the Deschutes employ is coming to my buddy's bachelor party in October. I'm really hoping he brings something awesome for all of us.
They tell us "Rock'n'roll is the devil's music." Well, let's say we know that rock is the devil's music, and we know that it is, for sure … At least he fuckin' jams! If it's a choice between eternal Hell and good tunes, and eternal Heaven and New Kids on the fuckin' Block … I'm gonna be surfin' on the lake of fire, rockin' out.
What they said plus Russian River, I am also planning on hitting up crooked stave. When do you head out?
Oooh I've heard of Crooked Stave. I'll add to the list.
Have you been before? I've heard there's always a crazy line for the Russian River booth. I think we may head straight there right when the doors open, get a taste then start browsing. My two friends are pretty serious about trying their stuff.
I head out Thursday morning. Which sessions are you doing? I'm doing Thursday and the members session on Saturday.

Funny you mention their habanero IPA as the only one we didn't care for there was their Wahoo wit with Thai chili, lime and ginger. Then again, I may just not like spicy beers.

Have you had Mexican Cake?
I know it tends to get overhyped because of the exclusivity and yada yada yada but it is a damn good beer.
Untappd is pretty handy. I've got a shit memory, owing to a handful of concussions when I was younger, and I'd honestly forget a lot of things about the beers I've had if I didn't have it

I can relate. I have entered several that I thought were new that it turns out I had had previously. Btw, my name on there is davemaynar if anyone wanted to add me.
Was out the other night, watching an old friend play a beer garden with his band. Mrs. LD ordered a local cider, tasted good, tagged it on Untapped. The cidery toasted my tag. Was kinda cool. I wonder if other companies do that.
It's called Homestead Hard Cider, of Attleboro, Mass.

Left Coast Brewing did that when I was out in California. Took me by surprise.

I've gotten a few cheers from Atlanta breweries and I always get waaaay more excited than necessary.

Socal: Bootleggers, Stone, Noble Ale Norcal: Lost Coast, Strike Brewing, does Lagunitas count?
