"i hope metallica would never stoop down to playin a hippie fest.
thats all bonnaroo is, a stoned hippie stink fest."
Ha!
That post made me start poking around too; I found this thread www.metallicabb.com/index.php?showtopic=62513 about the announcement. Doesn't sound like many of their fans are thrilled either.

I'm pretty excited about the lineup. Metallica is indeed the one that sticks out, but I'm being open minded, as any good Roo-ite should be. I love their early stuff, of course, and I hear they are pretty decent live. Otherwise, I'm extremely eager to see Pearl Jam, Gogol Bordello, and MIA. It has been noted that there aren't any trance-y artists on the list. Any thoughts on that?

i'd be willing to call sigur ros a bit trance-y, no? at least they are for me.
I can guarantee you Pearl Jam will put on an amazing Saturday night show. I can easily see them playing for nearly 4 hours. They are such a great act to bring to bonnaroo. I love PJ, they put out soooo much energy. I don't want to endanger my spot, but fuck, don't miss them. Metallica, I just do not understand. They will be on Friday right? At least we can get them over and done with. Please give me some Disco Biscuits and Blind Melon. I was sooooo hoping for a late night disco biscuits.....................
Yeah and same thing with Radiohead. I like Tool, but they sucked last year and didn't belong at roo. As for this year - it ALL sucks. If Pearl Jam, Metallica, Jack Johnson, Kanye, The Sword (wtf?), or Mastodon went the first couple years of roo, people would think they were SO out of place - and they'd be right. Where's Les? Buckethead? Any member of Phish? At least Umph is back again...

I don't know if trance-y is quite the word...I'd describe them as more ethereal. I was kind thinking something along the lines of Sasha or Infected Mushroom or Astral Projection. But I'm pretty excited about Sigur Ros. Karma for good taste.

I like the line up but I am not personally thrilled with it... I think I need to let it sink in for a little and see the additions before I get my ticket I think I like Langerado and Wakarusa's line ups better tho... I can't go to rado so I might be headed out to Kansas this year instead
I'm looking at Wakarusa too, even though I'm really not as disappointed with the Roo lineup as a lot of people seem to be. I don't really go for the headliners and there are enough bands I want to see to fill 4 days. Metallica and probably J.J. will be well needed nap time.
while i may have only recently joined inforoo, i have attended all but the first roo. i want everyone to look at the lineups from back then. SUPER jammy. not what im advocating, but the fact is, that is what bonnaroo was. over the years i have greatly enjoyed watching the fest evolve and i haven't missed one. in fact, for 2003-2007 i never had a single thought of missing, and was never anything but elated for the lineup. However, starting with 2006, there was an obvious shift. mtv bands started popping up all over the place and the fest began its march to the mainstream. but even though people like death cab were there, it was freaking radiohead! so they got a pass for the new commercial vibe cuz they still kept it close enough to the core roo vibe with tons of roo regulars. then in 07, the police reunion was the most blatant "MONEY MONEY MONEY" act yet, coupled with fewer core jam acts than usual. still though, a wonderful year. but this year has gone way too far. metallica and kanye are unforgivable. i preface all of this assuming ashley capps is telling the truth when he says there are no ground shaking artists yet to be announced. pardon me for not wanting to walk through centeroo and hear the sounds of mastadon thrashing to tracks off of "mountain of blood". seriously, was slayer booked? people who think this is the best lineup yet need to look at the lineups from 2002-2003-2004. if you really still think that, then you MUST realize what people like me, who went for the original roo vibe, must be feeling when we look at this year's list.
im not being negative, just honest. i have always trusted in superfly and A/C entertainment not to do what they just announced tonight. bonnaroo got where it is today by REFUSING, at least for the most part, to top off the roster with shallow, unartistic, commercial garbage like this just to sell more expensive tickets. while there are certainly some acts i would want to see, the cheapest ticket will be $240+ by the time it is in your hand, and most will be more than that. i cannot imagine a band more antithetical to the very core of what bonnaroo is(was) than metallica. i feel totally betrayed by roo, and i'm sure most ppl on here won't get it, but if you were there before roo could even DREAM of getting some of the huge names from the last few years, you understand.
If I may be honest without people virtually bitch-slapping me...the first year I went to Roo my dad was wayyyy more into it then I was. Truely the only reason that he, and about 8 of my friends, even convinced me to go was the fact that Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Radiohead, Beck, and The Dresden Dolls were playing. However, after stumbling around and experiencing lots of different music and getting to talk to so many different people and soaking in the all-around experience I left with an expanded mind. And now I am asking that of everyone else who says they are so dissappointed in the line-up.
For one, yeah boo to Metallica blah whatever. Nobody is chaining you to a tree or a stand in front of the stage and holding your eyes open forcing you to watch...there are PLENTY of other things to do..which most returning Bonnarooers know. Second, for everyone making the 'slitting of wrists' comments...if you know your musical sterotypes well you would know that the Death Cab fans are the ones normally said to be 'slitting wrists' where as metal fans are normally just testosterone filled individuals...geesh. Third, Mastodon and The Sword have enormous amounts of talent and I couldn't be happier that I get a chance to see them at such a free spirited event.
Sorry for the jump up on my soapbox...all of that was just weighing on my mind while going through all the comments. See you all in June!!!!

Ok, upon further review and evaluation of the line up I can say that this is a VERY solid line up that is just missing a few beats to it, hopefully to be corrected in additions. If the following are touched upon in the additions I will consider this the best line up I've ever seen:
-Late nights (Bisco, Infected, and STS9, please ) -More hip hop (more along the lines of Aesop Rock or Galactic) -The Mars Volta. Plain and simple.
I have been going to the Roo for 3 years now and I've had an amazing time each year. In my opinion 2006 was the pinnacle of lineups - 2007 was a little less amazing but still headed in the right direction. At the end of last year I would have told you nothing would keep me from Bonnaroo '08. But this lineup is just horrible.

its not a bad lineup, but for what i've come to expect of bonnaroo and festivals in general this year falls pretty short. all the musical itches i need scratched are going to be much better taken care of by langerado.
I couldn't have put it better. In the past I was amazed that the 'Roo could hit the spot in so many different genres! But this year they have somehow missed them all. My biggest disappointment is the lack of electronic-ish acts. Seeing STS9, Aesop Rock, DJ Shadow, Sasha & Digweed during the nights last year really made you feel good when you went to sleep.
I signed up for an account here because I was so excited about the festival but ironically my first post is probably the worst thing I've said about Bonnaroo in the last 5 years.

i really don't want to be negative nancy but i'm so confused about this line up. yes, it has some very amazing bands but the level of past years just isn't there.
dear strumntheguitar, i'd feel much better if your wishes came true. let's keep our fingers crossed.
my mom once told me, "things change and that's not always a bad thing. sometimes we change together and sometimes the other person just doesn't get it." question: are we the "other person" who just doesn't get it?
Metallica and Pearl Jam sets are the time I'll be spending getting a good spot somewhere else.
I skipped the Police last year to get a front row spot for Flaming Lips. It was definitely worth the four hour-wait. Especially since we had a guy in blue leading us in sing-alongs.

Karma for speaking your mind. That's what the board is for.
