It’s hard not to hone in on lyrics with Isbell, because he is crazy gifted with words, but he also happens to be an ace guitar player and his band is truly excellent.

i don't know how much you vibe with country but you're a weepy sap like me and Isbell is one of my favorites of all time.
his music is frequently sad but rarely depressing if that makes sense? he is quite funny because his lyrics are so damn clever. and there is an undercurrent of hope in everything he writes.
last time Isbell played bonnaroo and people were asking about him everybody here was like "go listen to 'Elephant'" and that day on inforoo many new people came back like "what the fuck jesus christ".
so while "Elephant" is his boldest and most emotionally devastating, and "If We Were Vampires" is arguably his best and one of the best love songs ever written, if I was challenged to recommend "just one song", i think the Isbell mission statement is encapsulated in "If It Takes A Lifetime". which is maybe a controversial take, i don't think it's a WIDELY beloved song, but it hits everything that makes Isbell great: it's catchy as hell, classic country/blues themes, touching but humorous, and hard 90 degree lyrical turns that punch you in the gut.
the Isbell inforoo top ten above is a great starter pack.
extra credit: if Isbell's music really intrigues you, his Music Box documentary on hbo is EXCELLENT. you'll learn how his mind works, it's a warts and all portrait, shit gets very personal and intimate regarding his relationship with his wife amanda shires (who is the most beautiful and coolest human being of all time). sometimes just the shit he says in interviews is so poignant and precise it totally fucks me up.
more than any other artist i think Isbell groks the fundamental spiritual malady of the human condition and is able to communicate that in a way i understand.

This might be my weakest top ten yet. Usually I have a solid set of about five bands I’m excited to see, but I’m just not at that level yet with this lineup. Definitely missing those “anchor” shows that govern each day, like others have said. Maybe it’ll happen after I start doing some listening.
I always like to post one of these before any research, though — it’s fun to see how it evolves, what I actually end up excited to see, and, after the festival, what my favorite shows truly were. Here goes:

god i dont even know where to begin. a slew of drunk 20 year olds shoving their way to the front so aggressively that people were literally falling down from the force of it; people yelling every 5 seconds so you could hardly hear Fred at points; crowd packed like sardines to the point that you truly could not even shift your body beyond 8 or so inches to the left or right.
and this was in the back half of the crowd. it isn't like i was dealing with these circumstances because i had pushed to the front myself.
oh and all that with the cherry on top of watching an ODed young person be dragged, completely white as a ghost and limp, through this insanely packed crowd.
