I like using Spotify monthly listeners as one metric, but it’s super flawed. For instance, Sierra Ferrell’s could partially be due to her song with Zac Bryan. And as we see with Billy Strings - who sells out arenas - that it doesn’t always pick up popularity. Then on the other hand you have artists like Samm Henshaw which seemed unknown to many here but he’s actually one of the more popular artists announced for Newport Folk so far if using just Spotify monthly streamers as an indicator.
That said, I do usually appreciate being able to see a 15 million+ monthly streamers artist in the intimacy that Newport provides: Clairo, beabadoobee, Lana, Noah, Phoebe are some that come to mind. Kind of hoping Mitski is that artist this year.

Can I get some Mitski recs. I’ve tried casually multiple times throughout her career and nothing has ever stuck with me. I always just kind of felt like she sounded like Weyes Blood but not as good.

Her music is definitely not for everyone. “My Love Mine All Mine” is her viral TikTok song - imo it gives off Father John Misty vibes. “Washing Machine Heart” has some St. Vincent (without the guitar work) vibes. “Your Best American Girl” is probably my favorite of hers because it takes you on a journey. “Francis Forever” is another good introduction to her marginally older stuff.
The Marley Brothers just announced a big tour starting in early September. I was guessing at least Ziggy and Stephen would be at Folk this year. Now I’m thinking all the brothers for a Saturday or Sunday headlining fort set… thoughts?

I know Stephen played a few years back. Besides having more family in tow this time, I don't see the setlist being much different this go round, so I'm inclined to think they won't be playing Newport. But who knows?

Love these recs. I would add Bug Like an Angel, I'm Your Man, and Working for the Knife.
If I could choose one artist to play this year, Mitski would be my pick.
Upcoming Shows: May 17: Neil Young and Crazy Horse/Reverend Billy May 30: The Rolling Stones/The Red Clay Strays June 20: Lana Del Rey July 19: Noah Kahan/Mt. Joy July 26: Newport Folk Festival August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Strong push back from me on the hate against repeat bookings. The #1 thing (in my mind) that makes Newport Folk unique is the concept of a folk family tradition. Any festival can go out and book big acts that are hot at the time, but Newport has established a culture built around tradition and values and bringing back repeat performers that represent that culture are what makes it special.
That being said, Alison Russell's curated closing act a couple of years ago was not for me. Love a few of her songs though.

I enjoyed Birds of Chicago. But not a fan of her solo stuff at all.

I am a fan of the Folk Fam repeat bookings. I have lost interest in some acts (Jason Isbell and Dawes for example) but I really enjoyed them as they matured from harbor to fort stages. One of my favorite memories is stumbling out of the museum to hear the 400 Unit run through Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.
I am not a big fan of Alison Russell’s solo stuff and the closing act at folk on was not for me either. I do like her as a guest with others and what she brings to the festival. I’ll see her open for Timmy C next month. I am also hoping she guests with folks on Friday and Saturday this year.

So far every act that’s looked like we’re gonna get has been gotten. So this makes me sad about Hozier probability, but I’d be stoked if Flaming Lips is booked

A collaborative set would be great. I've tried to get into Tyler Childers, but I just can't. Country is a hard sell for me personally. Any recommendations of his songs?

All Your’n Lady May Whitehouse Road Can I Take my Hounds to Heaven (this sold me on him) Rustin In the Rain
I have no idea other than Hozier. Maybe one of the days will be a collaborative closing set?
Probably wrong but at this moment in time… Hozier / Marley Bros collab / Tyler Childers
Mavis as a special guest and at the Pick
Picking
Friday: Hozier Saturday: Monsters of Folk or Noah Kahan Sunday: Joan Baez (to tie in that it’s the 65th anniversary of the festival and she performed at the first one)

After Jim didn’t show up to any of Conor’s “and friends” residency, I’m not betting on MOF. I have a theory that Jim is staying away from Conor in his new found sobriety.

Hmmm that’s some food for thought.
I just remember the MOF Instagram tagging NFF and teasing some future news for the band’s anniversary.
