My friend just reminded me that 6 years ago, we had this comic con go on in town and I would work at the venue that the after party took place at. A certain Oscar winner did a song with Cory Feldman during the party. It’s never too late to turn your career around, folks.
The show should be 3 hours, maximum. Cut the in-show ads and promos. I would remove the in memoriam and release a longer version on social media so that it can capture “everyone” that died. I would also trim up or remove the song performances. Either do 1 medley of all 5 or do them as pre-oscar events instead of just boring-ass Champaign carpet interviews. Also, we don’t need to see the presenters walk. Have any of these people been to a broadway show and seen how fast they change over sets? There’s so much time wasted. It’s like Editing isn’t a fucking category.

Dang. I don't understand why it needs to be cut. Absolutely no one wins when a winner gets cut off while saying, "We want to thank our families." Everyone loses. Same with obvious people being left off of the "In Memoriam."

Looking thru the Oscars wiki, In Memoriam wasn’t even added to the show until the early nineties. I also read an article that broke down how the time was spent and they waste so much time on the host and pre-planned videos. The show had d redden ballooned to over 4 hours over the last 25 years. My whole point is they could make the show so much enjoyable for the casual viewer while also giving the winners a bit more time.

They really don’t need to make the ceremony more appealing to the casual viewer. If they want funny celeb moments or whatever, they can watch the globes or other awards shows or an episode of Fallon. This is cinema’s one night a year, it probably needs to be close to 4 hours, it needs to have a long in memorium, it’s gonna be a little unexciting at times, it’s gonna have tribute/anniversary segments to certain stuff, it’s gonna have long acceptance speeches, and that’s perfectly fine imo. If that doesn’t warrant enough viewership on a Sunday night in early March for ABC, then stream it online or on Netflix or something.

so i was going to retort that the Academy needs the money from a television network for licensing fees, but then i realized i don't know anything about the Academy's financial situation.
first, as we all probably know they have a licensing deal with ABC that runs through 2028. the details of the contract aren't public, but sources say it's $100mill/year.
-In 2020, the Academy made $32.7mill in profit. not really "profit" since they are a nonprofit but revenues over expenses.
-In 2020, the Academy had net assets of $789.2mill. The value of it's investments (mutual and hedge funds) has increased from $187.8mill in 2010 to $653.3mill in 2020.
With a nest egg like that, the Academy will be fine broadcasting on youtube, or more likely just taking a lower licensing fee from another broadcaster at the end of the ABC deal or if ABC gets out of the deal.
the song crops in recent years have been pretty whatever. movies should just have better songs. but they shouldn't cut it because you miss out on stuff like Sufjan Thile St V and Moses Summer doing mystery of love, and eventually Radiohead will get that Bond song!

They literally made a qr code so you could see everyone they left out of in memoriam.
And even in their attempts to make this shorter it was still 3 1/2 hours this year. The SAG's are done in 2 hours and change and they let everyone talk. There is no host and they just get to it. They have 7 fewer categories but there really isnt a damn rush on speeches at all.
If they cut out the Disney and Wb handjobs that wouldve accounted for the smaller category speeches to have had the extra time they got cut off from at least. The songs were even cut down but it still wasnt enough for them to make this shorter.
The Sag's this year were shown on youtube which was kinda weird since it was on cable this whole time but Netflix was experimenting to see how it would go since theyre likely going to put it live on their service next year and get a ton of eyeballs on it. Prob even more than the bump the broadcast got last night. With the ABC deal it wouldnt be far fetched to put it on Hulu for everyone to watch if they dont have tv. Just even the regular package with ads, not just live tv. If you plaster it on the front page of a streaming service people will watch it.
