The reason I went to my first Bonnaroo in 2007 was because I wanted to go to Coachella to see rage but I couldn’t afford to get out to Cali. So me and my friends looked around online and saw Bonnaroo and said hey we can drive to this and see bands like tool and the white stripes and the flaming lips? Let’s go! Then rock the bells came out and we lost our minds because we could get to NYC. Got our selves up there because of rage. But our first time seeing wuntang, third for the roots, second cypress hill, everyone else but it was all about rage. From the opening notes I’d testify to the closing notes of killing in the name nothing will ever top that. No band has ever had the power and energy they did and no crowd ever gave that power and energy back like that crowd
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

I’ve said it before, but one of my favorite shows ever was Lyle Lovett at the Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta. I wanted to get tickets for David Byrne early, and to do that, I had to buy a package. David Byrne and Willie Nelson we’re no brainers, but I wasn’t sure about the third. I knew and liked a few Lyle Lovett songs, though, so I went with him. The day of the show, it was rainy and gross, and I did not want to get off the couch, but I decided not to waste the ticket cost, so we got up and went. We had lawn seats, which at Chastain means a very small section in the very back, but apparently the rain had put off other people because the place was pretty empty, so we were asked if we wanted to move up. We ended up about in the middle, and the show was so fun. He did not let the small crowd affect the performance at all. He was chatty and personable, sang the songs that I knew and loved, and just really seemed to be having a great time. I always try to remember that when I want to blow something off.
When I was 19, I had just learned about Ani Difranco from a friend I worked with at the time. We were talking on the phone one day, and she mentioned that Ani was playing that night in Asheville, which is about two hours from Knoxville, where we lived. On a whim, we bought tickets and drove to Asheville for the show. She was promoting Little Plastic Castle at the time and put on a fun show. The opener was Drums and Tuba who I loved so much I bought a shirt and cd. I wore that shirt until it literally fell apart.
Portishead at the Greek Theater in Berkeley was pretty amazing.
All three David Byrne shows I’ve seen have been awesome in their own way. The first was the one at Chastain, when Everything That Happens had just come out, so he was doing all Byrne & Eno music. The second was with St. Vincent in San Diego (and we got to go eat with crazykittensmile on that trip, so bonus points for that). The most recent was at Red Rocks, so that’s hard to beat. I think the last was my favorite.
In 2007, they put on the Echo Project in Georgia. One of the days, the Polyphonic Spree played followed by Thievery Corporation, who were right around dusk. It was just a lot of fun right into the perfect mellow atmosphere.
The only concert I ever went to by myself was Zappa Plays Zappa. Josh went to Bonnaroo alone that year, and ZPZ played at the Variety in Atlanta one of the nights. I got there early and got a spot at the front of one of the riser sections. It was the first time I ever saw them play, and I had really only recently gotten into Frank’s music at the time. It was all a very cool experience.
Seeing Daniel Johnston at the Variety was also an awesome experience. It was just so raw and real.
Last one - the first time I saw That 1 Guy, I had never heard his music or seen clips of him playing, so it was all just a big fun surprise. And he really seems to have so much fun and be so grateful to his audience for coming out. I’ve seen him once since then and would not pass up a chance to see him again.

LCD Soundsystem Bonnaroo 2016. Probably the most fun 1.5 hour stretch of my life.
Outkast Big Guava 2014. Huge stan of OutKast. I was so close to the stage that I swear Andre made eye contact with me as we were rapping his final legendary Elevators verse together.
I'll tell more from the rest when I got more time but this one is the most meaningful to me. This one's personal. Back in my high school days I used to get bullied mentally and physically on a daily basis. To lighten up my spirit I used to listen to Porter Robinson, Madeon, Hardwell, Above & Beyond etc. on the bus to school. It made me happy and got me through most of the shittier days of that time. So you got no idea how fucking happy I was to see that 3 of those where announced for Pukkelpop that summer. I persuaded my friends to go with me because normally we'd go to this edm festival every summer and this would be the first time breaking that tradition almost. I used to be a very anxious person when I wasn't around my friends. I'd get really scared and lonely on my own but on that weekend I took it upon myself to visit a few artists on my own including the three I mentioned.
Above & Beyond were playing on Friday night and I showed up a fat half hour beforehand to be in the front row. I managed to get right in the middle right next to what seemed some sort of fanclub who brought massive banners with signs that they wanted to push the button - I made one myself aswell but got to embarrassed to even show my friends what they meant to me and why I made it so I left it on the campinggrounds. They played most of We're All We Need-stuff mixed with some Ajunabeats-stuff from Beyer and Lane 8 and some older stuff from Group Therapy and older.
I got the biggest smile on my face and constantly had eye contact with Tony McGuiness that I felt like my whole body was blooming, my heart was racing and I felt amazing around these strangers whom were all in the same mind space like me. Then they hit Blue Sky Action and I knew what it meant, everyone knew what it meant. Tony came right in front of the stage and after a couple of seconds he choose me to come on stage and push the button. I was shivering as I got helped onto the stage by security. Tony came up to me and asks 'You know what to do right?' and I shouted 'Yes!' and pushed the button. I hugged Tony and Jono and thanked them for everything. Everything went by so fast and I litteraly felt like a king for a day at that moment. Everything that had ever happend to me for the past months and years.. Everything came together, like it was sort of meant to be. I came back into the audience and I got litteraly swarmed by a dozen of people coming up to me that I did a great job and that they felt happy for me and got hugged a by people and my heart felt like skipping a beat. I started crying - as I'm typing this, I got a little teary even after all those years. Happy tears. That has never happend to me. Sure from laughing, but from pure happiness? Never.
They continued to play the last 20 minutes mixing club and trance bangers with their more casual stuff like Thing Called Love, Sink The Lighthouse and Hello but most of those things didn't matter anymore. I just danced my ass of, most of the time with my eyes closed and just feeling the music as it went. Then it ended and I just had to go and sit somewhere and gather my thoughts of what just had happend to me. I cried again, sat there for a good 15 mins and then texted my friends to know where they were so we could meet up again.

Top Three: Kanye 2016 Atlanta U2 2017 Indianapolis RHCP 2017 Roo
This Kanye show was the start of me really going to concerts. I'd been to plenty before but this one really started the ball rolling. Amazing.
Fell in love with U2 at Roo and just had to see them again. I've never cried at a show but tears came to my eyes about 4 times during this show. During Sunday Bloody Sunday, Where The Street Has No Name, I think during Beautiful Day. It got really misty eyed during Red Hill Mining Town. Those horn and the screens were hitting hard.
Good drugs were involved during RHCP. It was great.
Some others: Flaming Lips Athens '18 David Byrne SK '18 Black Keys Simpsonville '13 Paul McCartney Greenville '19 Elton John Greenville '15
-Lady Gaga's Monster Ball Tour, 2011. The standard to which I will judge all pop shows forever.
-Icky Blossoms, 2012. My college had a pretty cool small club on campus, which vacillated wildly between booking bigger acts (The Men, Fuzz, William Tyler) and local bands, a practice that at the time seemed counterintuitive to me then but that I've only respected more as time goes on. They shut down for renovations for about 6 months, and this was the first show at the reopened venue. The energy was really unlike anything I had experienced before or since and the crowd went fucking nuts, with people literally hanging from the rafters. It was truly wild in a way I'm not sure I'll experience again.
-Paul McCartney, Bonnaroo 2013. obvious pick but really, does it get better than that?
-Hot Chip, 2013. The first time I ever got a setlist after a show, and also they played "Motion Sickness" for the only time that year...after I asked them to play it on Facebook. Remember kids, dreams do come true.
-Kanye West, Yeezus Tour 2013.
-Jack White/Nick Cave, Bonnaroo 2014. I'll list these together because they overlapped, because I am still a Jack White fanboy at heart no matter how many times he asks "Do you have something better to do?", and because seeing Nick Cave perform "Stagger Lee" is still something I can't shake.
-OutKast, Lollapalooza 2014. Another obvious pick but really, does it get better than that?
-The Replacements, 2014.
-D'Angelo, 2015. Fun story: I was very nearly propositioned for a threesome by a straight couple during Questlove's DJ set after this show. I then left and while waiting for an Uber met a new groom, likely high out of his mind on coke, who talked to me about the pros and cons of marriage for a solid 20 minutes.
-Lizzo/LCD Soundsystem, Bonnaroo 2016. LCD has maybe my favorite group moment at a show ever, and although I'd caught Lizzo a few times before, this was the exact moment she went from "oh, it's cool that she's opening to Sleater-Kinney" to "oh shit, she's gonna be a star now."
-Sufjan Stevens, Pitchfork 2016.
-Justice, Lollapalooza 2017.
-David Byrne, 2018.
-Four Tet/Aphex Twin/Little Simz/Four Tet & Perfume, Coachella 2019. A bit hasty but maybe the best single run of shows I've ever seen at a festival and an incredible performance with a surprisingly deep setlist by a band I never thought I'd get to see live.
-Charli XCX, Primavera 2019. There's some recency bias here, but I still can't believe that Charli XCX essentially doing karaoke over her own songs was still maybe one of the best shows I've ever seen.
I was at this show. I remember it was FlyLo's birthday too and he played before RH and he was TRASHED. So funny.
I was also tripping for this set and had this scary looking dude behind me who i swore was touching my ass the whole time. Finally for the encore I manned up and asked him to swap spots with me so I could be standing next to Tejas & Rothric who I was with and this guy kinda wedged in between us. When we switched spots I realised he had a straw hat strapped to his pants and it hit me that that was what was poking me the whole time.... At least I think it was. I'm still not really sure. But I do know if I had asked that guy to move at the beginning of the set I wouldn't have spent my entire first RH show being super uncomfortable.

This was my second time being them, and they were incredible. Played for around 3 hours. The drummer at the time, Thomas Pridgen, was so GD good that night!
I included this in my list. Saw them in January of 2008, setlist very similar. 3 hours of non stop Volta. Just unreal
Tastes and preferences change over time, so I'll go with three recent, but very different favorites:
3) Small venue: Grizzly Bear - BSP, Kingston, NY, August 2017. Days before the release of their glorious "Painted Ruins" album, Grizzly Bear played a small, intimate show at an old, rustic furniture store-turned-theater. We witnessed one of our favorite bands reveal as-yet unheard lush, new tracks, up close and personal. Only their second show following a years-long hiatus, they were already polished as if in mid-tour form. It was a surreal evening. We bought the CD at the show before its public release. Turned out to be one of my top three favorite albums of the last 5 years, making this even more special.
2) Large venue: Paul McCartney - Firefly 2015. A day after his birthday, Paul started the show with..."Birthday", as I'd daydreamed of before the show. With the kids now old enough to do a major festival, and the legendary Paul approaching the sunset of his career (but still as good a live show as most, IMO), we all agreed that this outstanding evening would be hard to top- ever.
1) Mid-size venue: My Morning Jacket - Red Rocks August 2015. I'd long wanted to see MMJ live, and long-wanted to see a show at Red Rocks. It all came together in one night, as they put on an incredible 3-hour show. It was our first vacation after a long year of my father's decline and finally passing away. The music, the venue, and Jim's message of love and acceptance pointed me in the right direction, at a time I needed it the most.
These shows and moments cannot be recreated, but we'll sure enjoy trying!
