For what it’s worth, the what podcast also mentioned on today’s ep that they have been hearing tool, and tame impala for months now. Then went on for like 30 minutes about Lizzos success in the industry and her multiple Grammy nominations this morning.
Probably adds a lot more credibility to these already solid rumors.
Listening now. These guys seem nice, but I don't think they know much. Even beyond inside information, they say things like "there is always a lot of crossover between Shaky Knees and Bonnaroo lineups." They are also talking about how much Lizzo deserves to be a headliner. Then when defending he says "why not put her as the first female headliner ever on the very top line. What could it hurt to put her on the Which Stage late at night for 250k and save a few bucks." Just saying things that literally make no sense to anyone who knows anything about Bonnaroo.
"Tame Impala is the slam dunk sure thing of 2020. It would make no sense for them not to play." Leads me to believe he thinks they should be there just like I thought they should be there 2 months ago. No actual info.
He does say he's heard Tool for a couple months which is interesting.
I follow brad on twitter and it seems like him and Lizzo are actually acquaintances. He has posted videos that she sent him, thanking him for being one of this first radio stations to play her music. I think that’s why he talks about her so much, because he knows something about that. I don’t think he would be defending her as much if it wasn’t something he knew personally.
I agree tame impala is the one that seems up in the air, but the tool rumor appears solid.

McCartney, Phish, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys were names being talked about early on. Not sure if Post Malone or Gambino had entered the conversation yet.
Post Malone was talked about a lot but the question was whether he was top 3 or not. Gambino didn't really come up until a couple days before the drop.
I thought there was some speculation Gambino would play due to the rescheduled dates from his injury. So no rumors, but there was talk about him in here I think.
And I was one of those saying Post would be a 4 or 5 so definitely remember those conversations.
I'm supporting the idea of seeing Lizzo as being top 3. While that may be true, I still hope they book something bigger than Tool, Tame and Lizzo as that combination seems pretty weak.
The undercard is more important than just that 1 headliner that you're not interested in. For me I must at least like 1 headliner and a decent enough undercard to enjoy the festival while not feeling like I paid too much.
A combination of great headliners and a good undercard is a rare thing lately. If I have a choice I'd choose for a weaker top 3 with more to see during the day and late night. Tame and Lizzo don't feel like "big" headliners but I'd enjoy their show.
What do you guys think? Do you prefer bigger names that you like with a weak undercard or the opposite? Does it have to be both to convince you and others to attend? I'm not a fan of bitching about missing out on some of the big bands that are available. It depends what the festival wants I guess. Some years they decide for those big top 3 to sell tickets quickly, some years they focus on having the full experience and take a risk with the top 3.
Last year it was Phish, Childish and Post Malone which isn't really comparable with 2018 (Eminem, The Killers, Muse) or 2017 (U2, RHCP, The Weekend). 2020 could be a year where they try to book bands/headliners on the rise who will headline other music fests in the future.
Phish is always a headliner at Roo, Childish only reached headliner status since his last tour (did he headline fests in 2018?), Post Malone I don't really know, but he's not an established headliner for a long time. In my opinion Tool is the established headliner, Tame is like Post where they're difficult not to be booked headlining and Lizzo is the Childish where from 2020 she'll headline most US fests.
If you don't look at the headliners, which edition was the best according to you? And did that edition have major or minor headliners (at that time)?
The undercard makes up most of the day and I loved the undercard this year and had tons of fun. I only liked one of the 3 headliners though and it made the nights feel a little anticlimactic.
no doubt has some bona fide hits, no doubt. but listening to Gwen Stefani it's clear she's the legit talent. she's got the songs, the wonderful singing voice, the take-no-prisoners-but-also-it's-all-love attitude.
i think this time next year we'll be laughing at ourselves for ever doubting her.

is there any touring data on how much Tool gets per show? I keep seeing people refer to them as "budget drainers" etc but I always thought they were just picky as to where they played.

I think it's based on the price of their concert tickets and the fact that their shows generally sell out even with the high prices. I can't imagine they'd be more expensive than Eminem though and definitely not more than U2.
I think Lizzo is at the same point Cardi B right a few months before she performed at Coachella. She had a few hits under her belt (not the album yet tho like Lizzo) but still.
She played Coach 2018. 6th on her day.
She had such little music in her discography at that point she only had about a 45 minute set around 6:00. But it was still the second biggest crowd I saw on the main stage that weekend, behind only Beyonce.
Did Bonnaroo ever had a stand-up comedy show on one of the bigger stages?
Chris Rock after Raconteurs and before Metallica in 2008 on the What stage.
Also, Conan O'Brien played during his tour but I didn't go that year and not sure where he played.
I'd love to see Eddie Murphy showing up as a pre-headliner for someone like Lizzo. With him making a comeback in 2019-2020 the timing would be right. Not sure if that would much sense tho.
So what album should I check out to see if I’m down with Tool?
I'd pick a recent setlist and listen through that honestly... get a good feel for their bigger hits and how they sound while (probably) previewing a lot of what they'll play next year

Considering they downgraded to just local comics and banished them to the hinterlands of Pod 6, I'd say it's intensely unlikely they bring back stand-up on the big stages
FUN FACT: Pod 6 was called the Boogaloo of Wonder, which somehow wasn't even the worst pod name from last year (Hayley Williams' masturbation tent took the cake there)
There's probably only one musical act with a dedicated following that can rival Phish's, that would bring a vibe that is timeless and always radiates positivity:

Conan was in the comedy tent but it was a mistake. The line to get tickets for his shows started at 6am and they ended up live-streaming it on the Rock Band stage.
I watched some live videos of Tool. I am not happy about this booking. But i guess they could've done worse
It’s one of the best live shows out there. What didn’t you like about it?
I'm guessing its because, by design, there are no high quality pro shot live videos. I probably wouldn't be all in either if all I had to go on was fan's shizzy cell phone vid of Stinkfist
