I'd just like to add that even though I thoroughly enjoy To Pimp A Butterfly for various reasons, you can't really deny the hype surrounding it. The world is riding Kendrick's jock pretty hard right now. For better or for worse, analyzing and submitting your perspective is kind of irrelevant. The fact of the matter is: the album is being hyped up the ass.

Well, it also has major label backing, so they have the money to hype it up.
If both Jenny Death and The Powers That B are released this month will both of them be up for voting consideration or just Jenny Death or The Powers That B?

I would say the vote would go towards The Power that B. Voting for half of an album wouldn't be fair imo

I was thinking so too, but I thought it might be disqualified since the first half was released last year.
I've been waiting days to just go ahead and say, put in my vote for Sufjan. Nothing's gonna take it from Carrie and Lowell this month. I know the voting chart isn't up yet buuuuuuuuuuut
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
I've had this on repeat all weekend and have no desire to listen to anything else yet. It undoubtedly is deserving of my vote.

I have never listened to Sufjan Stevens before. Should I go back through his discography before I listen to the new one?
No, but I do suggest listening to it when you have some quiet time. It's very poignant.
And if you like this album's sound/style, I highly suggest you listen to Illinois. It's just as sonically beautiful but afterwards it doesn't make you want to call up everyone you care about and tell them you love them in a fit of tears the way C&L does.

Not that it really matters if you do it before or after Carrie & Lowell, but you should definitely check out Illinois as well. One of my all time favorite albums!

You just described what C&L does in a way I hadn't been able to put into words yet. I knew I liked you for a reason <3
But honestly, that last sentence you just wrote. sufjan's tone of heavy weighted regret throughout the album just like ignites this emotional urgency in me when I listen to it. Especially The Only Thing, holy shit. I found myself writing an emotionally charged email to my ex because of that specific song because that track just makes me feel like, shit, there are some things you really just need to put out there and say directly to the people who matter in your life - or have mattered significantly at some point. Even if you don't get the response you wanted or thought you would. Speaking (or writing) the words still matters, and can be intensely cathartic.
Anyone who hasn't listened to Illinois, definitely do so ASAP. Michigan is also fantastic - and I personally think Age of Adz is a masterpiece but it is quite different.

This has to be the most stacked month of good releases in (at least) the last year and a half. Just got to Lighting Bolt the other day, which is solid.
Illinoise was my favorite Sufjan album until the new one... but this new one is outstanding. "All of Me Wants All of Me" might be the best song I've heard this year.
I am listening to Laura Marling now - there's too much great music this month. I haven't even been able to listen to Modest Mouse as much as I would have expected to by now...
New Action Bronson is so good. Too early for me to compare it to Kendrick but, at the very least, it's way more fun. I appreciate humor in hip hop and he has me laughing pretty constantly with his lyrics. Also listened to the Courtney Barnett today after seeing the rating on Pitchfork. Good but there's just too much great music that came out this month to factor in my AOTM decision. Now I gotta listen to Pyramids, Modest Mouse, and some other stuff.

Age of Adz is a masterpiece but it is quite different.
This, and All Delighted People, was my introduction to him. I'm not familiar with any of his other works.
How different are we talking here, between those two and this new one (and/or the rest of the catalog)?
All Delighted People is also great, agreed. Age of Adz is sonically experimental in brilliant ways while also intertwining sufjan's characteristic poignant and intellectual lyrics - but you hear the unique sounds first, lovely lyrics second with most of the tracks on Age of Adz. C&L and his other works are much more stripped down (I would never use the word "simple" in reference to sufjan's work, but sound wise more simplistic yes), the lyrics come to the forefront immediately. I can't explain it better than that haha but my advice is to just go listen to Illinois and Michigan and definitely Carrie&Lowell and navigate it for yourself!

That's such a great, heart-wrenching song. It's probably tied as my favorite. The lyrics seem so personal and touching. That had to be tough to write... and I couldn't imagine performing it live. I think it might actually be one of my favorite lyrics of his up there with "John Wayne Gacy, Jr".

SO HAPPY to hear someone says that. Too many people claim that it is too creepy to get into, that he is venerating a serial killer but gah that song is near perfection. All about how humanity in general is flawed yet even the worst behaved, most damaged individuals have light in them.

Just listened to Modest Mouse. I really like it but it's the type of album that could have been whittled down a little more. It's a great 10 song album that has 5 or so clunkers. Can't really factor into my upcoming AOTM decision with how deep this month is but I did enjoy it.
This Sufjan album is really good. My favorite track off it has been John My Beloved. This is such a hard month to pick a favorite. For me, right now it's between: Sufjan Stevens Courtney Barnett Tobias Jesso Jr
