2nd and 3rd verses on Heavenly Father are the best verses this year. I'd even say best in recent years as well.
Um. No. This is the kind of shit that teenagers think is "deep" and wind up quoting on their Twitter. Shallow, sophomoric, and a blatant attempt at making an "important" song. Even going beyond the puerile lyrical content, it's not as if he's putting on some dextrous lyrical display. The rhyme scheme is simple and uninspiring. If you think this represents "the best verses this year" or in "recent years as well," then I'd suggest you really need to start listening to more hip-hop, because this is bland as fuck.
okay - bless us with your supreme 2014 hip-hop knowledge

I already have. It's a terribly depressing year for hip-hop. The end.

Ab-Soul MadGibbs Iamsu! Schoolboy Q Mobb Deep The Roots Tech N9ne
And I've not listened to YG or 50 Cent but I hear those albums are alright as well.
Yes, it's been downright awful.
MadGibbs is the only one on your list that's even halfway decent. The Roots' new album is a joke. "The Infamous Mobb Deep" is about as good as any Mobb Deep album post-Murda Muzik, which is to say it sucks. SchoolboyQ has a few moments here and there but it's uneven at best. And are you really citing to shit like Tech N9ne?
The best hip-hop albums this year are probably MadGibbs, Step Brothers, String Theory, Statik Selektah and Blu, and even the best of those wouldn't crack last year's top-5, or maybe even top-10. It's a weak year and your taste has always been suspect, deal with it.

please post top 10s for last year and the year before for reference
Here are some hip hop albums that were released last year: Yeezus, My Name Is My Name, Czarface, Acid Rap, Run the Jewels, 12 Reasons to Die, Indigoism, Summer Knights, Extended Play, Marci Beacoup, Nothing Was The Same, Doris, Albert Einstein, Old, LongLiveA$AP. Make your own top ten out of that, and tell me what detritus from this year you'd put over any of those records.
My homework for the night is listening to the new Counting Crows album. Let's hope it's closer to their first few albums and much, much further away from their last couple of albums.

Why the hell would you bring up Counting Crows in the AOTM thread?

Probably for the same reasons he thinks ATYSYC is an "outstanding album."

Really torn between Spoon & Ty Segall for August. Fka Twigs and Merchandise follow close behind but I'm afraid I mostly like them for the change of pace. I'm afraid Spoon & Segall are too similar and exceptional to choose between for a few more days.
