I got through a bunch today while driving. I thought Bombay Bicycle Club was decent, Marissa Nadler's album almost made me fall asleep while driving and I thought the Augustine's album sounded like a mediocre U2 cover band.
But two albums stood out so far: Nicole Atkins and Tinariwen.
The new Tinariwen album is the leader in the clubhouse for me with a lot more to go. Mali bands has been killing it lately (no insensitive pun intended).
I'm almost ready to case my vote for Sun Kil Moon, but out of respect for the process, I will wait. Who knows, right?
Thank you for your restraint. Go listen to Angel Olsen.
I've been listening to it for about a month. I love it, but emotionally I'm WAY moe attached to Benji. I might have to stop listening to it on my way to work, or at least maybe skip the songs that hit me a little too hard.
This is going to be a difficult month. There's already a few albums I could see being in the mix and each one for completely different reasons.

I agree with you on all points except Marissa Nadler and Tinariwen. I haven't listened to Tinariwen yet, so I have no opinion. I was listening to Marissa Nadler while driving in a snow storm this weekend. It was one of my most beautiful musical experiences so far this year.

F*ckin Jim Wise is brutal.
Micheline had me pretty choked up this morning on my bus ride to work. I cannot remember the last time I heard an album I felt I could relate to this much, and just impact me so emotionally. I dunno.
And yeah, if you look for the new Beck, you'll find it.
Edit Monster, you're so right man. I need a fucking hug!
Our people here listening to Beck's new album or are those singles the only thing out right now?
Listened to it a couple times so far. I've been a fairly big Beck fan since the mid 90s and I gotta admit that I wasn't feeling this new record too much, outside of 2 or 3 tracks. I may end up being in the minority with this opinion, but it just wasn't for me. My least favorite album he's made.

No problem, that's how I feel about the new Broken Bells album too
^^^I like Morning Phase quite a bit, but I'd honestly be surprised if it has much appeal to his fanbase at large. It's a little sleepy. But I also think it represents a step forward for him in almost every direction musically. His songwriting feels more complete, his handle on production Harry Nilsson levels of good and his lyrics as direct and honest feeling as he's ever been. It's super steeped in 70s rock/pop. But again, very sleepy and filled with melodies familiar to any Beck fan.

But yeah, that Augustines album is horrible.
I'm going to try Marissa Nadler in a different environment.

It's definitely a situational album. Very bleak, depressing, beautiful. I'm having the same "problem" with Benji. It's clearly masterful, I just don't want to cry while I'm at work.
Also, just listened to Tinariwen. Superb. February will be a very tough decision for me.

I don't know about this Sun Kil Moon album yet.
But to his credit, this guy filled an entire album with songs about food and dying. I think he mentions every fast food place in America on the album, right after talking about someone he knew dying.

I'm big on Sun Structures by Temples, that's probably the favorite right now, but I have really only listened to Bombay Bicycle Club John Butler, Broken Bells, Big Gigantic, Marissa Nadler so far.
Broken Bells and John Butler were disappointing I had never heard Marissa Nadler before here, its not really my style. Bombay Bicycle Club was decent but nothing extraordinary Big Gigantic sounds like all the other Big Gigantic stuff. I love it live, but I would never consider it AOTM.

Next on your list should be Angel Olsen and Sun Kil Moon,
I do enjoy that Temples album, I'm not familiar with them at all, so excuse my ignorance, but does anyone else hear a bit of Tsme Impala in there? I've found some similarities, and tho it's certainly not a bad thing, I'm kinda looking for something a bit fresher, if that makes any sense. I could be way off

You're definitely not way off on this opinion. It's Tame Impala lite. Not a bad album at all in my opinion. I actually like it. Just wasn't the most original sound I've ever heard.

It is definitely a lot like Tame Impala, I would say more Innerspeaker than Lonerism but the influence is definitely there, very 60's sounding.
I have to listen to that Sun Kil Moon, its not on Spotify yet though, is it streaming anywhere or on youtube?

Sun Kil Moon's new one is on Spotify. That's where I first listened it.
John Butler Trio - I'm tempted to vote for it already, but restraining Sun Kil Moon - Sure it's got songwriting talent, but holy fuck it's depressing Tinariwen - It's good. Definitely honorable mention status Broken Bells - Heard once, seemed pretty disappointing - especially in the second half, will listen to again Temples - Poor man's Tame Impala

Ok, that Sun Kil Moon album is really good. The guy is an Massillon, Ohio native and I have never heard of his work before, I'll have to check out his other stuff. Very good songwriting and he has a unique vocal delivery. I'd like to see him live, just because I have to imagine to play those melodies and sing like he does would be difficult.
Plus he mentions my hometown in one of his songs so that was a surprise.

I know it doesn't meet the criteria, since it's a live recording (and might belong in Bacon's boring music thread), but Band of Horses - Acoustic at the Ryman has taken over my morning.
As expected, I'm obsessing over Noah Gundersen's album. There is nothing groundbreaking sonically or stylistically, but he just has an amazing way with words and a perfect tone.
