A bit old, but I guess I missed this one. Unreleased Kendrick and Q-Tip track. Possibly from Tip's upcoming solo album The Last Zulu (Good Music). I need more of this injected directly into my veins.

Unfortunately, this Dave East/Styles P album is not as good as I had hoped it would be. I was hoping it would bump East to the next level, but I don't know.
However, the Bun B album that I missed (came out Aug 31) is very nice. I love that botht Gary Clark Jr. and Leon Bridges are on it. I'd love to see more of that. In fact, I don't think that I've seen multiple collabs like that on a hip hop album. Any UGK/Bun B fans on here?

tЯist♡n and Crab Mech just wanted to let you know that I have went on a Danny Brown journey during the last two weeks after I made my list in the albums of the decade thread. I listened to his 4 main albums in order 3-4 times each. Here are my thoughts below.
Hybrid Theory: 6.5/10 - Sensing some Deltron 3030 influence. Good album all the way through but nothing that very memorable. Favorite tracks were probably Greatest Rapper Ever and New Era. Nothing aggressively bad here. Also nothing that I need to return to.
XXX: 8.25/10 - Love this one. Came into his own. This would be far and away my favorite Danny Brown album if he cut the fat. The first 3 tracks are all great. DNA is my favorite song of his. 30 is an amazing closer. Overall this still might be my favorite.
Old: 7.25/10 - Side A is everything Id ever want. Side B... ehhh. Feel like that stuff is already dated. The run from Torture to Red 2 Go is my favorite 4 song run on any of his albums. My only nitpick on Side a is that the purity ring song feels a little dated and out of place. Side B has some fun moments and songs, but overall I dont think Ill come back to that much. Im sure they are all exciting at a live show. Side B holds this thing back. Side A on its own would have been in my top 5 albums of the decade maybe. Oh well.
Atrocity Exhibition: 8/10 - This is in consideration with XXX for my favorite of his. Personally, I prefer something like DNA to his “wild voice / wild songs” but this album is so fun. Downward Spiral is a questionable intro imo. Really like Dance in the Water, Tell me what i dont Know, when it rain, pneumonia. I think ill need to be in a certain mood to listen to this a bunch moving forward though, where as XXX is more accessible and relatable.

Do yourself a favor and listen to Detroit State of Mind 2-4 too. 4 is like a preset to XXX
Specifically songs like the opener "D-Boyz" with Slum Village; "Keeps it 100", "Murder Game" with Guilty Simpson, "Gametime", "On My Shit", "L.O.L.", "Counterfeit", and a personal favorite "Contra"

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

What about Black and Brown? Im a long time Black Milk fan.
I'm a huge Atrocity Exhibition fan, but it speaks directly to me. XXX is a strong 2 with, Detroit State of Mind 4 Old is my 3 for creativity. Hybrid actually didn't bump for me, but has tracks. DSOM 3->1 in that order.

I had to go back into my collection of Danny because of you... yea, I mean DSOM4 is basically one of my favorite mixtapes of all time.

I had a lot of fun making a list of my favorite hip-hop albums from this decade and subsequently running through Danny Brown's discography. I'm going to start running through a bunch of stuff from the 2010s so I can feel better about my list at the end of the year. Including artists/albums that I'm already familiar with just to see how I feel about them now.
Over the last couple of weeks, I've revisited Big Krit. Every "album" he dropped this decade. 9 albums in 10 years Jesus Christ. I have been a fan of Krit's since the first time I heard Krit Wuz Here in 2010. The idea of someone trying to combine elements of Houston with Outkast / Nappy Roots while actually caring about lyricism was a wet dream for me at the time.
My biggest issues with Krit have always been that he puts way too many songs on each album. Can always expect like 16-19 with 4-5 that could have been chopped. He also makes too many songs that sound very similar to each other from album to album. It seems like he has tried to recreate the spirit of Crumblin' Herb by Outkast on like 15 different songs when he does like the humming singing choruses over a slower track. Krit has never been a great hook writer in my opinion, but he seems to feel the need to write and rap/sing every single one of his hooks. I'd prefer he just let a beat breathe or use a sample more often for a chorus. He talks about religion a ton, but for some reason, I like how he addresses the topic. There is usually an interesting angle that he is approaching the subject with, and I think rap songs about religion typically sound great... choirs and soulful shit. Finally, you can tell that he takes his lyricism seriously, but early on he was just not good. Especially on Krit Wuz Here. It was almost redeeming or cute in a way where he had all the right intentions with his lyrical content but he just didn't have a talent for it.
Then you could watch him become a fantastic lyricist over the course of the second and third albums. It was so fun to watch that happen. Of course, he still relapses with a really cringy line here and there in his later projects. On King Remembered in Time, he literally says "I'm more spiritual than lyrical, do my own beats it's nothing short of a miracle." The best version of Krit as a lyricist is when he gets full command of my attention by simply stating feelings in a way that... make me think, get me emotional... etc. It isn't like punchlines or multi-syllable traditional lyricism or anything like that.
Krit Wuz Here
The one that got me hooked. Love so many tracks on this and still regularly seek them out. As I mentioned above, his lyricism was not quite there on this one, and when I first heard this album I REALLY prioritized lyrics far more than I do now. So I actually like this more now than I ever did. Hometown Hero, Country Shit, As Small as a Giant, Children of the World... I could go on naming like 12 songs. Trimming this album down by 4-5 songs, a prime Krit lyrics wise and a better mix would have made this an all-timer for me. It's still something I will return to every now and then until I die.
Return of 4eva
The best Big Krit album. Seeing his growth as an artist from Krit Wuz Here to R4 was so rewarding to see as a fan. He improved as a lyricist, swung for the fences more, and opened up about his personal life a ton which is a theme that would carry on from then on. The Vent, in particular, was almost stunning to hear for the first time. I couldn't even believe this was the same guy. It's not to say he wasn't personal at all on KWH, but it's just like he found a secret sauce to be able to reel you in with his phrasing and delivery during important moments. The R4 Theme, Vent, Dreamin, American Rapstar, N-word acronym song are all important moments in Krits evolution in my opinion. Once again he could have trimmed this a bit, but this is actually one of my very favorite albums of the decade regardless. I think if the tracklisting was cut to the following this would have been my number two behind MBDTF from the 2010s:
Intro Rise and Shine R4 Theme Dreamin Rotation My Sub Sookie Now American Rapstar Made Alot Time Machine Another Naive Individual Glorifying Greed and Encouraging Racisim The Vent
Anyways... love this.
4eva N a Day
Interesting follow up to R4. Every time I listen to it I wonder if it is actually better than R4 but I've decided it isn't just because the highs aren't as high and the overall project just isn't quite as exciting. Still, it's his most focused project. Takes you through a day in the life. He continues to take you deeper into his own mind and it just feels so pure. Like you really get a window into this guys head with no filter. One criticism I've heard and can understand is that beginning with this album, he began to follow a formula with each of his projects where he was trying to almost recreate R4 in a slightly different way. Always have the anthemic chanting song in the beginning, singy slow songs are coming in just after halfway. Love affair with his car is usually around track 5-6. I get this, but I still can't help but like the sounds that are going into my ears.
My favorite songs are Red Eye, Me and My Old School, Boobie Miles, Handwriting, Alarm. Red Eye has actually made me cry before. That's extremely rare for me in hip-hop. I wanted to quote like half of this song here but in particular the lines at the end...
"being friends would make it harder to breathe, so if you're ready to fly, just forget about me, but if you're willing to try, then I'm willing to leap out of the window of pain and fall in love at your feet... I ain't the man you want me to be. I guess that's what's been bothering me."
Live From The Underground
At this point, Krit had dropped 3 "albums" that I adored, and I couldn't have been more excited for his big "debut." I was hoping that this thing would be a landmark album in hip-hop. Well, my high expectations were not met, but I think that has left an unfair stain on this album. Listening now and there are great fucking songs here. Just enough blah tracks to put it a tier below the previous 3 I mentioned. The title track is just the epidemy of Krit owning his lane. It's the shit I've been wanting more of in hip-hop since the first time I heard Aquemini. Cool 2 Be Southern is strong. The two chanty simple songs actually ride (I Got This and Yeah Dats Me). Money on the Floor is a gem. Then the album ends on a killer stretch of If I Fall, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Praying Man and a reprise of the title track.
Listening back now and I think If I Fall is a good track to highlight. The kind of chorus I wish Krit would resort to more often. The feel of this song is so pure. His flow here is noticeably more crisp than before. Lines like "when I'm fucked up the only time I feel fine" hit way harder now since he's opened up much more about his drinking issues in recent years.
There are basically 6 songs on here that I consider completely forgettable. That holds it back.
King Remembered In Time
There is a bit of welcomed exploration on this one. Krit actually introduced me to James Blake with the Wilhelms sample on REM. Cool M83 sample at the end as well. It seems like this happens on a lot of his albums. Starts really fucking strong, drifts a bit in the middle then ends really fucking strong. The Future song is trash and out of place. So annoying. King without a Crown, REM, Banana Clip Theory, Multi Til the Sun Die are my favorites. I think the closing 5 songs of this album serve as another checkpoint in his career where it's just like fuck man this guy's is a legitimately thoughtful, creative, and exciting artist that has evolved so damn much since Krit Wuz Here. Again, you could chop this down to 10 songs and get a 9/10 album. He has so many great songs to me but so many forgettable tracks to balance it out and hold him back from reaching his potential.
Cadillactica
Always felt like he took a step back in his growth with this album. Especially since it followed King Remembered in Time which made me feel like he had so many interesting directions he could pursue. Cadillactica doesn't add much to the Big Krit story imo. Now, as I listen to it again, I'm realizing that it was nice to get a more professional and smooth sounding album than some of the mixtapes. It's actually pretty hard to poke holes in this album. This may be my favorite thing about this exercise. I might just have another Krit project that I love that I never gave a fair shake. Life, Cadillatica, King of the South, Saturdays = Celebration are my favorites from this one.
It's Better This Way
Started Falling a liiiitle out of love with Krit around this time. Cadillactica and this album (still consider even this one a true addition to the Krit canon) weren't bad, but I just started feeling like I got everything I was ever going to get out of him. It's almost like he wore me down with so much quality content in 5 years. King Pt. 4 is fucking awesome. In fact, once again, the first 4-5 tracks from a Krit album are all fire. Piece on Chain is a great example of why Krit made hip-hop better as a genre for me this decade. Not even that this is one of my favorites, but it's just so Krit and I wouldn't have had anything like it if it weren't for him. I appreciate that this one is shorter, but unfortunately, he finally does this on the album with the least amount of memorable songs. Lots of good and not enough great.
4eva is a Mighty Long Time
K.R.I.T. (the album) left me feeling like he had so many fun directions he could go in but never did. So when I checked in on Krizzle after two years off, I was initially disappointed to hear that this was basically the same sound as cadillactica and other areas of his discog. Just wanted to see more progression since that was what was so fun to follow throughout the first 5 projects. However, it didn't take me long to get over that and start really enjoying this album. This is now the album that just shows you exactly what Krit is all about. Best thing to show a newcomer probably. This is the only one where I don't particularly mind the length. You just have to be ready to invest and dive in when you think about this album. The beat change on confetti and part where he is flowing with "cuz when your wrist game is the..." is just my shit. Love that flow and that beat. Price of Fame is a prime example of Krits style of lyricism and delivery at its peak.
Krit Iz Here
Thing dropped a couple weeks ago and is what sparked this trek. Its a little hit or miss for me at this point. There are some songs on here that feel like he's stepping outside of himself in a way that isn't experimental but more like hes succumbing to some trends. Krit Here, Make it Easy, Learned from Texas and Mississippi are my favorites so far. Overall, I'm not very excited by this right now. Maybe my least favorite of his.
1. Return of 4eva (8.5/10) 2. 4eva N a Day (8/10) 3. 4eva is a Mighty Long Time (8/10) 4. Krit Wuz Here (8/10) 5. King Remembered in Time (7.5/10) 6. Live From the Underground (7/10) 7. Cadillactica (6.75/10) 8. It's Better This Way (6.5/10) 9. Krit Iz Here (6/10)
My favorite 11 Krit songs in chronological order are Country Shit, Hometown Hero, R4 Theme, Dreamin', The Vent, Red Eye, Live From the Underground, Mt. Olympus, Banana Clip Theory, Confetti, Price of Fame.
Overall, Big Krit was one of my favorite hip-hop artists of this decade. Wish he would have done something to gain more attention. I also still think he has his best album left in him. Hope that gets proven right. Honestly, with 7 albums that I enjoy and 4 I consider great, he's going to end up being one of my top 20 favorite hip-hop acts ever.
As a newcomer, I'm still struggling with that voice over beats that aren't energetic. His flow on that song in particular makes everything feel cluttered in a way that I am not enjoying. Maybe one day I'll come around.
