why the hell do people schedule meetings at 4:00 on a Friday? I have had TWO people try to meet with me at 4:00 today. whats up with that.
I am the only one in my section that has opted to work a four day week at current. Until a couple of weeks ago, I had Mondays off. My boss scheduled consistently scheduled staff meetings on Mondays because apparently I didn't need to go to them. Ironically, the explanation she eventually gave me was that it was the best time to get everyone together. That's right. I was told scheduling them on a day of the week where one person was 100% not going to be there was the best way to get everyone together.

They know that if you can figure out alien technology like an intercom/phone system, you're beyond their grasp.

Friday afternoons are usually slow and relaxing for me, I feel bad for all you Friday haters. I love Friday after lunch, especially when I'm caught up and nobody else is coming to bother me because they are busy catching up.

We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
I feel like this is the best place to ask, not a complaint merely a question.
Anyone know of any professional resume editing/writing services that are IT focused? My fiance needs his overhauled, and I'm willing to pay someone at this point with all the tech term mumbo-jumbo involved.

I don't really know of a writing service but you could go to stackoverflow.com and find job postings for what he does and mimic their jargon.

You don't count as part of the team since you abandon them 20% of the week

Hey! I work the same amount of hours that everyone else does.

In the last 8 workdays, I've interviewed 28 applicants. Most have been incoming 2nd-year law students looking for work next summer, but we're also looking for attorneys with 3+ years of relevant litigation experience. It's flattering and all that my firm asks me to do this, and I know it's much more stressful for the applicants than for me, but I'm tired of it. I'm tired of trying to figure out if someone is sufficiently smart, driven, capable, and experienced in 20-30 minutes.
Low points have included people with typos in their resumes, people who think they know what a word means but don't (today it was penultimate), and general suck-ups ("I read your blog and it's really well written." "Thank you." "No. I mean it's really well written.").
But occasionally, you come across a superstar. I had one of those yesterday. Masters from LSE, fluent in 3 languages, and work experienced that included interviewing North Korean defectors for the South Korean intelligence service. His biggest flaw was that he wants to work here. Fortunately, we're willing to overlook that.

I love when my boss tells me to do something a certain way, and then I do it, and then when I'm questioned on it later by someone else I'm not supposed to say "because my boss told me to". Ugh. Calgon, take me away.
I wish I had a much more straightforward job. Does such a thing exist?

You could deliver pizzas. Doesn't get more straightforward than that.

I would also like to be able to cover my living expenses.

I hate that kind of crap. I took over some work from a team member that was switching teams. When I was looking over the work the first time, I asked him why he did something and he said "because Supervisor told me to". So then Supervisor asks me why teammate did that... and what could I say?! "Because you told him to?" UGH

Exactly! I worked around it and explained some of the logic behind it, but I did say it was her decision ultimately. My job is just forever stuck in the grey of EVERYTHING, so it's all open to interpretation and we're told to use our judgement and that two people won't necessarily handle things the same way...but in a lot of ways we are expected to handle things the same way. It hurts my brain.

My personal hell is, when I need an interpretation on something, I ask my boss and then he comes back later, after I turn it in, questioning why I did it that way. I just tell him I did what he told me to.

Instead of "my boss told me to [do it this way]" could you spin that by saying something along the lines of "Hmmm. Ok I can [do it your way, which is probably the right way], but I'd have to check with [boss] first to see if they're OK with me doing it that way instead"?

It was more of a "Why was it done this way?" from someone else.

I feel like you can still say "My boss told me to" without throwing your boss under the bus.
What about something along the lines of.....
"Why was it done this way?"
"I met together with [boss] and we both decided this was a way to go about it. I am open to any suggestions on how we can improve this process, and I would be willing to relay that to [boss] to see if they like that plan also."
