A lot of really great music has come out in the past 40 years. It's stupid to criticize anyone for focusing on those artists.
Plus you have to remember that the Beatles catalog isn't very accessible to a lot of people. It wasn't available on iTunes for a long, most of it isn't on Spotify.
this is a good point I just can't imagine growing up without hearing Beatles albums....it seems wrong
I was 20 the first time I heard an entire Beatles album (driving to Bonnaroo in 03 actually). It happens. The Beatles are great, and seeing Paul is a bucket list item for me, but I tend top prioritize music my peers are making.
I think being able to see how many people add each artist was a brilliant move on Bonnaroo's part to cover their donkeys. "Oh, you don't think Mumford should be a headliner? Well you'll notice that just as many people are flocking to them as Macca." Hard to argue with numbers.
Bonnaroo doesn't really need to cover anything. Mumford & Sons are a major festival headliner now, whether people on this board like it or not. They overflowed the second biggest stage two years ago, and since then have gotten even bigger, plus released one of the best selling albums in recent memory. They're massive.
The only people who don't think M&S are headliners are people who a) don't like their music personally, or b) don't think anyone who has only really become popular in the last 10-15 years should ever headline (except for totes hetty bands like MMJ bros, they could do it).

derp all festivals do it. if they're smart they use the information to inform scheduling.

Not sure what 'tote hetty' means, but the difference between a band like MMJ and Mumford and Sons is longevity (among many other things).
I have a feeling this will be looked back on in 3-4 years like the Jack Johnson experiment.

What is this Jack Johnson experiment you are referencing? I'm a big Jack fan in the right settings and moods.

No, the difference between MMJ and Mumford & Sons is "popularity."
As for people who say they only have two albums...how many albums did Arcade Fire have, three? The average headlining band isn't playing more than 24 songs or so anyway, so who cares? The only true dud in these headliners is Petty, an uninspired retread booking who was boring the first time he played in 2006. But it's still better than recycling Panic or whoever for the tired "jamband" headliner slot, so whatever.

This lineup is great. My only complaint is that it seems really heavy on bands who play original songs. Whatever happened to all the cover bands? I feel like Bonnaroo is really straying from their roots by not booking Lez Zeppelin, Dark Star Orchestra, Unchained, etc. Hopefully we get Mini Kiss or Hell's Belles in the additions to fill this obvious gap.
