Not sure this is quite in the same category as the other songs, but my original thoughts went to Beatles, Marley, and Crosby/Stills/Nash/Young.
Until recently I was unaware that this song was about Jerry Cantrell Sr., who's nickname during the Vietnam War was "Rooster." I guess I had just never really thought about it. I also read something where Jerry Cantrell said the interview for the music video was the first time he had ever heard his father really talk about the war.

First time wandering into this thread. Having just been to see Randy Newman a couple weeks ago the first one that pops in my head is "Political Science" but I see it's already been posted. I suppose "Rednecks" qualifies well too...
