I was hoping to get some honest opinions from some of the music "critics" around here?
Okay - so I checked out both Charlie It's Alright and Driving Through Illinois with Josh Ritter. I agree - he has a very pleasant voice a la Ray LaMontagne or Sam Beam. The songwriting is there too - good imagery. I found the organ/vibes to actually distract from the rhythm of the songs and the "wall of sound" effect of the drums didn't work for me. The steel and other guitar work was nice and Charlie is a very catchy tune. Overall, I'd say I enjoyed it, it didn't blow me away, but I'd listen to more and would go see him the next time he's at a Jammin' Java or a Birchmere type place.
For all the non-Boardwalk Empire people, The National did a cover of "I'll See You In My Dreams" for the show. I couldn't find a youtube, so the streaming link above will have to suffice.
