The Crazies was surprisingly good. The Descent was pretty good as well. Anyone who has ever been in a cave should be a little freaked by it.
I don't need to go spelunking to be freaked out by The Descent. I'm horrified at the thought of being underground like that- I was in fight or flight mode during the whole movie!
Oh it's even worse if you have been in a cave. The silence is so absolute that your mind wants to fill it in with some noise, and the lights from your helmet can cause some crazy shadows.
I think the people who are bagging on TBWP probably only saw it in the theater.
The first time I saw it was before it got picked up my a major studio. A film freak friend of mine brought it over on a VHS tape, and it was very unnerving. Something got lost in it's transfer from video to celluloid, the theater version looks different. The VHS looked raw, like it had just been ejected from the camera, whereas the theater version looks...well it looks more like a movie and not like actual handy cam footage.
THAT LOOKS AWESOME! I'm really a big fan of the found footage genre. But lately I've seen a few stinkers and have started to wonder if it's run it's course. What a great idea to do an anthology of shorts! And I really really dig the setup; thieves hired to steal some rare found footage discover stacks of video tapes at their targets location. Man that is a damn good idea for a movie.
And what's this?

Oh Hellz yes!
EDIT: Edited for a derp moment while trying to use style sheet tags.
That said: Poltergeist. First scary movie I ever saw. To this day I count between thunder and lightening, and keep the door to my closet open so if any funny business starts up in there, I'll know it beforehand. None of that light-coming-from-under-the-door, then bulging door, then door-flying-open-to-reveal-a-giant-evil-throat-of-the-devil-to-swallow-me business up in Mayo's house. No sir. Closet door OPEN.

I prefer creepy when it comes to scary movies. I'm not big into the horrific death scene movies. With that in mind in no particular order: Poltergeist The Other One The Shining Rosemary's Baby The Others What Lies Beneath The Exorcist

I really want to like the Shining more than I do. Looking at it from a completely cinema stand point the movie is genius. That being said I have a bookshelf full of Stephen King novels that just doesn't allow me to appreciate it as much as I want to.
Also. Poltergeist is probably one of my favorite movies ever. Definitely in the top 10.
Honestly, it takes a whole lot for me to consider a horror flick a favorite of mine, and in the past I would have never said it was a favorite genre. But I have seen so many bad ones over the years, that it makes me appreciate the better ones that much more, so I guess now some of my favorite movies ever are horror movies. I'd say the all three of the ones I mentioned are in my top 50 favorite films... Suspiria for the production, soundtrack, and gorgeous visual style (the colors in that movie are unreal), Alien for its perfect character development, pacing, and atmosphere, and Rosemary's Baby as a great horror movie in a totally different sense. I could watch all three at any time and be equally as moved, with maybe the exception being Suspiria, as it isn't a creepy horror flick as Quacker would put it.
Oh, and reading through and seeing comments on The Descent... saw it for the first time a few months back, and I absolutely loved it. Though it had some issues, I loved it so much that I went out and got the Blu Ray. Still haven't seen the sequel, but I'm not sure if I want to.
Also, cannot go without mentioning The Shining as a favorite, I just feel less of an obligation to represent it as it's almost universally considered a top tier horror movie.

Have you guys watched Martyrs or Inside? I'll tell you, contemporary French horror is a must for genre fans.
I'd say that I have to agree with Bishop that Alien and Rosemary's Baby have to be in any top horror list. I would add The Shining as it's a personal fav, Night of the Living Dead (another personal all time fav), 28 Days Later, and for your slasher variety I always thought Candyman was highly underrated.
