I've been about a half pack a day smoker for almost 25 years. When I was out drinking I could smoke a pack in one day, but the bulk of my smoking history is about 10-12 cigs a day. I've quit for about a year before, but like an idiot, picked it back up. I've been reading through this thread for some encouragement. Here's my story so far.......
I got sick with the flu on December 23rd and absolutely could not smoke a real cigarette or use my vape. On the 25th, I ended up in the hospital because I was having a terrible time breathing. I literally couldn't even turn over in bed or walk a few feet without gasping for breath. Once I was a bit stabilized with some breathing treatments in the ER, they admitted me. The nurses knew I was a smoker and asked if I would like the patch. I declined. My thought process was that I'd been without nicotine for nearly 48 hours, so why re-introduce it to my system. It seemed as good a time as any to just walk away from it and go 100% nicotine free. (I ended up being discharged the next day with meds to help my lungs)
My main motivation to stop was the inability to "catch my breath". It was terrifying. I've worked in healthcare and have seen people with COPD gasping for breath on 100% oxygen and I swore that would never be me. I do not have COPD, but the respiratory problems I had with influenza were probably exacerbated by my smoking history and it was enough of a scare for me.
I'll tell y'all another part of this story. My 9 year old daughter asked me a week before Christmas if I was going to stop smoking. I told her that Mommy was really stressed out but I'd try to use my vape more often. You see, Number 2 on her Christmas Wish List (right behind Skylanders Swap Force) was "Mommy to stop smoking". Seriously
I'm now 10 days nicotine free. The worst is right after I eat dinner. So long as I stay busy it hasn't been too horrible. I would like to find some alternative methods for when the cravings hit. Mostly I'm mentally talking myself out of the craving. Anyone have any suggestions? What helped you? I don't want to substitute the "hand to mouth" motion with food though, god knows I don't need to gain anymore weight.

I know this may sound crazy but I would do something that takes you as far away from the craving as possible and simultaneously starts repairing some of the damage done. Try going for a brisk walk, bike ride or run after dinner.
It's been a week now since I took drags off of someone else's cig, and almost two weeks since I smoked a whole cig on my own. I am doing it without a vaporizer or e-cig, bc i want to break the addiction and i dont think nicotine is good for me.
It is getting easier for me - I was amazed that I made it through a night of partying at Bassnectar without even bumming a drag! My main motivation is purely vanity. I spent some time looking at aging studies of twins and the difference between smokers and non smokers is striking. Every time i want to light up, i just think about what i want to look like 15 years from now. Of course I also want to quit for my health, but For some reason it's easier for me to live in denial about the reality of all that.
One of the most helpful things I've read up on regarding smoking is to try and bring mindfulness to what it is smoking does for you. Many people unconsciously use it to numb feelings of grief, anxiety, and deep seated issues. Not having that crutch it can actually help you get in better touch with your feelings.
Way to go to those of you who have made it so far and those who are trying!

Have you tried going for a walk? Gets your body engaged and out of the environment that is associated with smoking. Of course this time of year isn't great for that, but maybe some other type of exercise? Then try to bring awareness to your feelings of anxiety/whatever else you are feeling that makes you crave a cig. Those feelings will pass.

i think the exercise is a good idea but maybe try meditating when you aren't able to exercise? try focusing on clean air going into your lungs and visualize it repairing your body. imagine that you are giving yourself life with each breath (and you are!).
could be a good way to curb any anxiety that might come along with not smoking, too. to mix the exercise and meditation ideas, maybe try some yoga?
i know you don't want to substitute food for smoking, but water doesn't hurt if you don't already drink enough
absolute best of luck to you and everyone else quitting. hang in there! you're awesome!

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I have been a pack a day person for 7 years, and in the past year have also vaped on and off. I always used my vaporizer as a novelty, and it was handy to have in places that don't have accessible smoking areas. My old kit was an eGo twist, and I was burning through charging cords, pushing the charging pins down in the batteries, and was really frustrated with the whole thing. Yesterday I went to the new vape place in town, and they carry the pass through charging vapes, where I can just plug it in like I charge the rest of my electronics(yay for no threading issues!). The guy there also suggested I up my nic level, since I used to have no problem chain vaping and then lighting a cig. Some wintergreen juice, an MVP 2, and a lime green skin, and I was good to go.
I noticed by last night that I hadn't smoked a cigarette since I had bought the new kit. I tried to light one this morning and after one drag I put it out. I knew it would taste like crap, but it just seemed that the drag wasn't really as satisfying as that first smoke of the day, so I picked my vape up and puffed away while I had my coffee. I've been a full 24 hours without a cig, and while I wasn't exactly planning on quitting, I think the universe is telling me it's time. I won't lie, I'm pretty excited about the possibility!
Hubby and I are 13 weeks tomorrow! So proud of all of you who are working so hard at this. I'm vaping exclusively and have dropped to 11 mg nicotine. If you have considered trying to quit I HIGHLY recommend the vape. Thanks to abrakapokus who educated me about them as we froze our asses off smoking and talking about how we needed to quit

I will also be at 13 weeks tomorrow (Monday) and am sooooooo excited! way to go!!!
Super Bowl party tonight. The majority of the people here smoke. I have a pack in the car but I didn't bring them in, and I don't have a lighter on me. So far things are going fine, but I'm not tipsy yet. Hoping for the best.
I ordered those V2 cig things. Anyone try these? I've quit every year around this time of year, and always made it until Bonnaroo. I then smoke like a chimney while I'm there, and slowly start it back up when I return home. I feel like if I can get into these things, it'll allow me to not follow my old tendancys

Just bought a Trippy Stix Inferno package from volcano E-cigs. Not sure what will come of it yet, but its a start. Figure if I like it and dont buy cigs until it pays itself off its worth it. If not, ill convert it into a vaporizer.

I ordered a "Ultimate starter kit" from V2 Cigs. I received 2! Double checked and I was only charged for one ($200 after shipping) The kit is pretty awesome. I'm pretty impressed. Well worth the money, I smoked the last cigarette I had left earlier. FYI -The 2.4% is WAY too strong for someone who only smoked about 3-5 a day, just a heads up for anyone looking into it.
I haven't had a cig in 5 weeks. Just picked up a vape Monday, but I use 0 Nic liquid. Picked up some earl grey tea with honey liquid today and it is out of this world.

Well its been almost a day with my vape and no cigs. Haven't felt a craving all day. Usually car rides are the thing that gets me smoking and my vape is a great substitute. Only hoop to jump through is I just ate dinner and am yet to see if my vape can work as a after meal sub as well.
All in all I plan on progressively decreasing the amount of nicotine over time. I also feel like this wont necessarily help reduce cravings but hopefully the vape is at least healthier.

You're doing what I had planned to do....then, WHAMO, influenza visited and turned me into a non smoker. I have an aunt who was a heavy smoker (2 packs/day) and she has been vaping exclusively for 6.5 months now. She's all the way down to like 8mg nicotine in her juice. Anyway, best wishes to you! I hope vaping works for everyone, it's definitely better than all the real things. And if for some stupid reason I go back to nicotine, I hope I reach for my vape before picking up a pack of cigs <crossing eyes/fingers/toes> that day never comes

Is the liquid in Canada sold with a x.xx% to let you know the nicotine strength? Down here in America Sr. the strength is listed by milliliter, in bottles of varying volume; oop north seems to have a better system.
For your reference purposes, should you find yourself buying in the USA on the way to Roo this year, 24 ml is the strongest I've seen, Marb Red flavor. (Tastes like poop).

i actually ordered online and I believe it came from Miami. I don't know anything about a liquid. The "filter" you screw onto the "battery" is the cartridge with a % on it. They came in packs of 5, and supposedly each cartridge is equal to one pack of smokes. I ordered each strength they had, and different flavours ( like the menthol, as that's what I smoke), the strongest being 24%. That one helps when I get a big craving, but I stick with the 12 for the most part. I'm really liking it. I'm only 5 days in, but I know for sure I'm weening down.

Question on the menthol. Usually I smoke menthol's as well because they give me a "cool" mouth feel instead of a harsh tobacco flavoring. Im noticing my caramel flavored liquid is giving me that dry mouth as if smoking a non menthol. I know liquid is probably different, but is it just a menthol flavor you have or actually give you that cool taste as well?

Congrats on cutting back!
As far as I can tell, there are about four levels of vapes for nicotine:
Blu, etc - one time, single piece throwaways that are equivalent to a pack in a single 'stick'
The type you have, two piece with preloaded exchangeable catridge & rechargeable battery cylinder
Two piece with exchangeable, refillable, cartridges & rechargeable battery cylinder. You choose from hundreds of flavors and the spectrum of nicotine strength.
The last levels are like computers - you can adjust the rate of liquid flow, temperature of the 'burn' plate, etc.
If you get to try the other types I'd enjoy hearing opinions; anyone else with experience as well.

You're using a battery with a cartomizer/clearomizer in a tank right? If you are using juices, check out juicyvapor.com. I ordered my juices from there and really liked their selection, prices, fast shipping and especially the sampler packs to find a flavor I liked best.

Bacon - Margarita - Lemonade(thinking this will mix well with fruit flavors) put on order. Sample pack is a great idea rather then just get one big bottle. And to add what a selection on juicyvapor thanks for the tip.
