In 2006 we had a number of producers making this new sound with a focus on space and bass. Each producer had his own take on how to do it, but they were all making spacey, dark music for big big speakers.
With a little help from the internet, the genre grew because it was so unique. But in growing, it also evolved. The relaxed, dubby vibe got pushed aside to make way for more. More wobble, more sounds, more everything. Maximize to maximize.
Along came crappy speakers. Radios, laptops and white earbuds. No point in making bass sounds for something that can't play low frequencies. So we throw in a bunch of electronic "filth" sounds. Take the overtones of the wobble and make them the focus. Wobble noise. Wobble anything that can be heard on laptop speakers.
The result? Something that sounds like dubstep, except they took out all the good parts and replaced with crap. Fucking Skrillex.
For me this is one of those shows that will be epic fun but might be skipped if its conflicts with a must see. Although to immediately contradict myself I tend to pick alot of my Bonnaroo shows based on enjoyment/scene/crowd > musical talent as i am not going to the fest as a music critic but to enjoy the vibe of the fest overall. This is why GWAR was one of my top shows in 2010.
Alright...my rant about Skrillex, not like anyone cares.
His music is catchy with great melodies and beats, but is just too "crunchy" as a whole and recycles a lot of his trademark sounds to the point where it gets annoying. That said, "With You, Friends (Long Drive)" is a nice departure from his norm and definitely my favorite song of his. He has done a lot for pushing EDM into the mainstream, and I have no ill feelings towards his music...I just wish he would switch things up a little more.
That said, his show is going to be a PARTY. There is no way in hell I will miss this, and it is one of my most anticipated shows of the weekend. All these music snobs need to learn that there is a time and place to appreciate deep, substantive music and a time and place to rage your f*cking balls off.

This is how I usually pick my shows. As much as I love some singer/songwriters, I'd rather go to a show with all of my friends and dance and have a good time rather than watch an indie guy strum a guitar, even if I enjoy the indie guy's music more.
No usually just mine, today though you are acting like the musical equivalent of a person with a three inch dong who buys a monster truck.
What are you talking about? I didn't even do anything today... I responded to Phi's "Skrillex > FlyLo" thing but that doesn't even involve you.
Actually what you did was come into a thread of a friend of mine and started acting like a complete and total jerk, trying to ruin it because in YOUR opinion the band he likes is not very good. Therefore I started making fun of you and treating you like a complete and total jerk, if you don't like being treated that way stop acting like one.

You are being insanely antagonistic for absolutely no reason. I really didn't do anything, I made a joke about Skrillex that even Phi knew was partially in jest. Take it down a notch, dude.
Can we please do each other a favor? If there is a thread about an artist, keep the discussion about the artist. Stop with the posting of pics of other artists. It only serves to make people angry that created the thread, in most cases, because they enjoy that persons music.

Thumbs up.

Regardless of what you think about Skrillex, I agree with what somebody said on the last page. It's going to be a packed show (just shy of 50% of the people on bonnaroo.com have added him to their line-ups). If it's not your cup of tea, go to a different show. There will be at least two other options going on then.
Also, Phi didn't help himself with the FlyLo comment, but he does bring up the point that there are plenty of other places to trash Skrillex on this forum. He's this year's Ham Sandwich artist. I get that. Please give the fans he has on this board at least one place to talk about him without having to wade through a bunch of jokes and smack talking.
