I've been a fan of Sam Harris for a while. I think he was in the wrong in his recent year-long debate with Ezra Klein over Charles Murray, but I understand he was trying to come from a pro-science place, I just don't think Murray's science is worthwhile. I love when Sam takes on Trump, but I think he does his best work when he sticks to neuroscience, philosophy, and meditation.
Rubin I think is kind of a clown. He just wants the spotlight.
The Weinsteins seem alright, smart guys, but I don't know a ton about them.
Shapiro is just a traditional republican who hates Trump. He's a sharp guy, but he can also be a bit trollish. There are smarter and more well-spoken anti-Trump conservatives out there, David Frum comes to mind.
Peterson has some self-helpy ideas that are potentially useful to some, but I think he is intellectually dishonest and IMO overreacted to the Canadian laws concerning trans-positive speech. He's clearly a conservative christian but always dodges questions about his religious beliefs, which is weird. He also dances around his beliefs about traditional male and female roles, generally he refuses to answer questions directly which is a sure sign of intellectual dishonesty.
So IMO some good, some bad. Definitely entirely too white. They should have at least profiled Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Maajid Nawaz as well.
offcially going to see TOOL sunday and booked a single camping spot at a place nearby. gonna make a day out of it by myself. can't tell ya the last time i've been to a concert/festival alone. this is a festival but it's only 2 days and i'm only going sunday
Do it. I rather run with any or all of my 3 kids, but I hit a bunch of shit solo over the last 2 weeks including both days I went to jazz fest. You get to do it your way. Whenever I splurge for some vip or SVIP by myself, I get called out for being a loner. But idgaf. I march to my own drumbeat at any fest I’m at anyway, so I’m used to it. Have fun at Tool.

Biggest take away for me is the platform which does allow for anyone to say anything and possibly be way off but come across as credible and lend some bullshit into common discourse. Republicans did it in the mainstream from 2008-2016 and sold their absolute falsehoods about the Obama presidency to willful believers.
It’s okay to do lectures and put ideas out there, but there is no replacement for vetted news.

Ben Shapiro is a far right bigot who shouldn't be taken seriously by anyone, especially The New York Times. He's right that Trump = bad but he supported... Ted Cruz in 2016 so he's not exactly bastion of thoughtful criticism.
This is funny because on the way to Atlanta I thought I saw one single drop of water hit the windshield. It didn't rain at all. So my wife said maybe it was bird pee. She said birds pee right? And I said of course they do. Then l saw this this morning. I was wrong birds don't pee.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Also, I find it so interesting about how much life revolves around counties in the South. Up here, I bet a lot of people can't even tell you what county they are in. The only time they are used is for storm warnings.

Buttloads of Bees - They had the swarm up on YouTube. I was kind of laughing about it. I love bees and never f'k with them, but if I'm in the middle of a swarm, I'm probably thinking "Killer Bees."

I don't live in a county, I live in a parish. But I know what parish I live in and the names of most parishes in the southern part of Louisiana. Seriously though, I didn't realize they aren't as predominate up north.

It's primarily a (southern) New England thing, since the states are so small and all land is incorporated into some municipality or another.
You go off into New York or Maine and counties are more of a thing. Not like the South, but more than CT/MA/RI.

I can never remember the county that’s directly south of me. I think it’s Dutchess? Or is that on the other side of the Hudson?
I do know the other surrounding counties. Because like Bonz said, weather alerts. Otherwise we use city/town names or regions. NY is too big to be county-centric.

Dutchess is east side of Hudson, primarily around Poughkeepsie. Might be one between yours and Dutchess.

Yup, had to look it up. Columbia county. Always forget about that one. It’s a drive-thru county. Ain’t nothing there.
Edit: It’s barely a drive-thru county. Most people take the thruway to Poughkeepsie. The Taconic Parkway is really beautiful, but it becomes a deer riddled trap at dusk.

I disagree that counties are much of a thing in NY. I remember it being a bit more important closer to NYC but people down there are generally a bit more self-important.
When I was living in VA and NC it was a bit more important and I see a lot more true Southern dwellers refer to counties fairly frequently here.
Ohhhh no no no no no no. I would have been sobbing. I can't handle bees like that. Not allergic, just mildly terrified.
i'm interested to know your "very terrified" , or even just "terrified" reaction.
I am too, actually. There aren't many things that make me immediately freak more than bees. Though I should clarify that it's just unexpected bees. If I know there's one nearby minding their own business I'm alright, but I keep an eye on it. And a couple years ago I went to the honey shop at the PA Renaissance Faire and even let some bees crawl on my hand. It made me nervous but I was okay. But if I'm just hanging around outside and there's suddenly one buzzing around my face or Godforbid touches my arm, I make a pathetic Chewbacca sound and immediately just run. It probably looks hilarious. It's a gut phobic reaction that I'm pretty sure stems from a time when I went camping when I was three and stumbled upon a hive, resulting in several bees stinging me in the head. I don't remember any of this, and I've had bees sting me since then and it's not the worst thing in the world, but yea...I don't do bees. In a swarm like this I would probably either run a significant distance or go full roly-poly and immediately curl into a ball until they've gone.

Are you talking about the way Atlanta people talk about counties? I guess they do that because Atlanta is in parts of 4 counties. I know counties around me but I don't use them when I'm talking about places.

I am TERRIFIED of bees. One single one or a swarm. Hornets, wasps, any other stingy flying insects as well. I run, freak out and am scared shitless of them. I am also deadly allergic, so there might be something to my fears.
Allergies aside, you guys do know that bees really don't want to sting you because it's going to be over for them. They protect their group and will sacrifice themselves for their hive. But most of the time when you encounter them, they're just out hunting for pollen. Wasps (aka Geps), Hornets, Yellow Jackets and such don't have those types of limitations. And many of them are pretty mean. When I lived out near Bayou Lafourche after Katrina, we had tons of geps everywhere. If me or anyone in the family got stung, I'd literally fuck around outside until I could get 10 of them back. It wasn't hard, because there were nests everywhere. And in the house we were in, there was an opening to the attic under the carport where they'd come and go all day. A flip flop basically stuns them and allows you the opportunity to fuck them up.
I'd then feed their pieces parts to red ants who I'd allow to carry off the carcasses until I put more there. Eventually I'd stomp the fuck out of them too, because they'd just as soon bite me if they could. But they did enjoy their free handouts before I went all Pink Panther on that ass.

I kind of forgot about the greater NYC area. You're right. Westchester, Fairfield and Suffolk Counties are all terms I hear/use a lot.

I don't think I have heard Atlanta people use it any more or less than others. They are just more significant elsewhere. It means more. Like I remember Mike D saying he bought his house where he did because of some different law or taxation or something. Or even Bonnaroo- people talk about Coffee County police. County has nothing to do with our governance, laws, etc. around me.

Are different counties under the same city? Here in New Orleans, we are Orleans parish and all our government only covers Orleans parish. Jefferson Parish (JP) has multiple cities under them (Marrero, Kenner, Metairie, etc.), and I think all have their own police but JP is under one governing body. I could be wrong, I only really worry about the governing body for me. Gretna is under JP but they have their own police, court and jails...I am not really sure how all that works. I just know Orleans Parish is under New Orleans governing bodies.

Counties under the same city? Like Atlanta? No. There are multiple towns and cities in each county, but the county lines follow the town lines. Each town has their own local police and then there's state police. Although, I think some small towns, like my home town (like 5K people), group their police efforts together with other small towns.
This is actually an interesting read (I think I have looked this up before...). Louisiana parishes and Alaska boroughs function the same as counties. Most counties are divided down further with some municipalities are in multiple counties (like Atlanta and holy moly there's way more than I expected) and NYC is uniquely separated into counties (I had no idea the boroughs were actually counties).
And here's the southern New England thing LD was referring to which makes sense why county talk always sticks out to me: Counties have significant governmental functions in all states except Rhode Island and Connecticut, where county governments have been abolished but the entities remain for administrative or statistical purposes. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has removed most government functions from eight of its 14 counties.

I think counties often have law enforcement, too, although I think for counties it's usually a sheriff's department, whereas for cities, it's usually a police department. (This got me on a tangent because I was thinking that on Reno 911, it's the "Reno Sheriff's Department," which it is, but there is no such entity. It's the Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff's Department.)
In Carson City, NV, there is no county. It's just an "independent city" according to Wikipedia. (If you're filling out a form that asks for county, you just put in Carson City.) In Las Vegas, you hear Clark County referred to just as often as you do Las Vegas. I think there are five different cities that make up Clark County, but most people lump them all together as Las Vegas.
I live in Byron, Georgia, now, which is almost entirely in Peach County, except for one tiny part of it, which is in Houston County (which is not pronounced like Houston, TX, I have learned).
We do car registrations by county here, and my water and garbage are both through the county. Zoning is done by county (so, like, we didn't want to buy in Bibb County because you aren't allowed to have chickens, and we would maybe like to have some chickens one day).

New Orleans is a Parish Seat (county seat) city, so the entirety of the city lies within the same Parish. Some Parishes have municipalities, like where you live. There are cities like Gretna, Kenner and Harahan which have their own municipal government, and then unincorporated areas like Metairie, River Ridge, Marrero and Harvey which fall under Parish jurisdiction. I think the reason these are more important in Louisiana than in other places is that the Sheriffs generally get to hold the purse strings subject to councils or whatever. But they get to mostly call the shots, spend the money, enrich their friends and that kind of shit. They also get to collect the real property taxes, so they control revenues.

Are the utilities still through swbno and Entergy in the other parishes? I also know that in Orleans we have a choice of garbage providers, is that the same in JP? When I saw that stuff brought up it really made me realize I have no idea how our city/state is broken up, and who controls what. I know that Orleans Parish is the only parish with a different brake tag (inspection sticker) than the rest of the state, but other than that. No fucking clue. I just pay my bills and taxes.

There's another one for me. I don't think I have ever heard the term sheriff outside of TV and movies! I think of the double guns, the gold star, and tumbleweed when you say that. Car registrations, water, garbage, zoning is all town here. I guess our towns do rule our land like Wiki says.
Is Houston County is it pronounced how-stun? That's how Houston St in NYC is pronounced.
