Who are some really strong simple singer-songwriters nowadays? We've got a classic coffeehouse station on at work with lots of Simon & Garfunkel, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, etc. Simple but lovely melodies and harmonies. A lot of the singer-songwriter stuff that I hear nowadays comes across as being too try-hard. Like they're trying desperately to sound emotive and passionate or flashy or whatnot. A lot of overproduction and unnecessary instrumentation as well. I already listen to Sun Kil Moon, The Tallest Man on Earth, and Ben Howard. And Sufjan. Anybody else relevant nowadays with that simple, classic sound?

Just off the top of the head.
Ah yes I love I&W's early stuff. Civil Wars are pretty good too. Never heard of Jose Gonzalez though; I'll have to check him out. Thanks!

Yeah I stumbled upon him after hearing Heartbeats on a commercial. Nothing special, but solid if you're in the mood for singer/songwriter.
A few more off the dome:
Elliot Smith Patrick Watson (some of it is very stripped down) Nick Drake (old) Jeff Buckley (different from what I think you're looking for, but always worth mentioning)

Love that genre, lemme suggest some others for you (though really, you should probably just play Sufjan on loop and if people complain, just tell them to gtfo):
Joe Pug Gregory Alan Isakov Benjamin Francis Leftwich Civil Wars Obviously Iron and Wine
Off the top of my head. I'll think of more.
Edit: Just saw some of those have been listed already But I put in another vote for them!
Second edit: realized you're asking more for yourself, not the store's playlist... so my Sufjan comment probably didn't make much sense haha.

I am not sure why I haven't seen Arrested Development. I have seen exactly one episode. The year was 2006 and I was hanging out in Lagos, Portugal at the Rising Cock Hostel. I watched the episode where a nurse or something stole a cell phone and hid it in her vagina. Obviously, this kind of humor is right up my alley, especially as the day that I met Hakuna I offered him a place to camp in my vagina. But somehow I have never seen another episode. Maybe the fear of the rest not living up to that?
I've stayed in my share of hostels, and that name could apply to most of those bone palaces and dens of iniquity.
Arrested Development was (is?) just a silly, overrated TV show that had the occasional moment. I've also seen exactly one episode (also in 2006). It was forgettable.
How are this and Star Wars even mentioned in the same breath? Whether you like it or not, the Star Wars trilogy (there are only three and don't try to convince me otherwise) was an absolute cultural phenomenon. It was one of those things that became so massive it has permeated across all parts of culture. Moreover, it rewrote the rules of a genre that had mostly been the realm of B-movies. Yes, there were other good sci-fi movies before it - Space Odyssey & Planet of the Apes come to mind - but it was Star Wars that opened the floodgates for more serious fare such as Alien, Blade Runner, and Total Recall. I feel like we need to send those who haven't seen the movies to adult sleepaway camp (or even just the Rising Cock Hostel?) and force them to watch, a la A Clockwork Orange.

Mmmm yes Glen Hansard. Thought of a few others that might fit into what you're looking for (maybe not all precisely within the singer-songwriter genre but close enough, IMO): M Ward, Great Lake Swimmers, Blitzen Trapper, Fleet Foxes, Damien Rice, Horse Feathers, Peter Bradley Adams.

I got out of class super early tonight because there isn't any gas going through to any of the kitchens. So we shaped our loaves, wrapped one up to take home and cleaned up.
Today I had the most convenient inconvenience. I went to Shop-Rite on my break from work because I wanted to pick up some stuff to make a smoothie. I pull up just in time to see someone backing out of the parking spot closest to the door. Win. I turn my car off, open the door, and I hear a very loud HISSSSSSSSSSSSSS coming from what turned out to my tire. I don't know what I ran over, but I could see a two-inch gash in the rubber of the tire, and within a minute my tire was completely flat. It was going to need to be replaced. Fortunately, only about 200 yards away there was a Firestone, so I walked there and explained my situation to the guy at the counter. After describing the gash in the tire, he said that it was going to need to be replaced anyway, so I'd probably be fine driving the car over as long as I went slow. I knew it was a bit of a risk to my rims, but after some Googling I decided to give it a shot. Luckily, all the different parking lots on this strip are connected, so I was able to just go through them instead of having to be in traffic. I pull into the Firestone and drop of my car, head over to Wawa to grab a hoagie, and within a half hour, my car's ready to go. And since I work at another store in town, the guy gave me 10% off because he likes to support local business. So then I head back to work, and was only ten minutes late in coming back from break. I've never had such a non-stressful and short-lived car repair situation, and I probably never will again.

That's incredible, but you're right that you probably won't have that kind of luck again! Car troubles tend to come at the worst times - that's like part of their existence.

I initially thought maybe the flat tire thing was a bluff and he just wanted an excuse to take a selfie to show off his new hurr (or lack thereof)

Our school had a power outage over the weekend. We lost everything that was in coolers and freezers. There's still no gas to the baking kitchens yet. And I can't access our school website to do any of the work I wanted to do today.
My first class was 8 minutes long. My next class starts at 6pm.
